View Full Version : Should Votto be named captain?

It only makes sense to me to make this move. Votto is an incredibly hard worker. A good example in the clubhouse. And most importantly, a superstar player locked into place for the next dozen years. Should this team bestow the honor of putting the C on his chest this season? I, for one, feel he deserves it, and has earned it by now.

I say yes, but I doubt Votto would go for it.

Depends what the management expects a 'Captain' to do.

Captain doesn't seem like enough. Supreme leader? Ayatollah? Commandante?

My "no" was primarily because my choice would have been "no now" or something akin to that.

Leave the captain crap to football or ice hockey.

I think the time will come when he is team captain and it will feel just. But I don't think that time has come yet. I think Votto has it in him to develop to be that kind of leader. But I don't think he's there yet.

Rolen is a better fit right now character-wise.

Agreed. But probably not a fit. The team needs Votto to produce on the field, not manage the clubhouse.

I thought captain was mainly a hockey thing. The only captain I can think of in baseball is Jeter.

Derek Jeter and Paul Konerko are the only current MLB captains.

Pete Rose, Davey Concepcion, and Barry Larkin are the only Reds captains I can remember.

I don't see Joey being that kind of guy. You kind of expect your captain to be a vocal leader as well as leading by example. Sure, he fits the second part of the mold...but I don't ever see him fitting the first part.

How many teams have captains? I'm thinking not many. I don't think it's necessary to name any captain

I wouldn't consider it until Votto says that's the role he wants to take on.

Well I don't think it's necessary, per se. I just think it'd be cool to continue the tradition. But you're right, maybe Votto isn't up for that.

The Canadian in him might be more comfortable with Prime Minister.

I voted no..

Larkin got a lot of sarcastic remarks calling him "the Captain" as if that meant he had to be perfect.

I don't want to see any player ever subjected to that again.

Sadly, at some point the fanbase will probably turn on Votto. I hope it's a long honeymoon, but it's going to happen. I don't want the title of "captain" to give the detractors more ammo. Already went through that with Larkin.

No more captains.

I think this is still Brandon Phillips's clubhouse...

I answered yes from the "if they were to name a captain" perspective. That said, in baseball, I think it's the kind of title where if you have to ask, the guy hasn't earned. And if the guy has earned it, he doesn't need the title.

This is usually an ego stroke. I think 10 years, $225M has stroked Joey's ego quite nicely.

Not while Sam LeCure's 'stache is on the team.

Seriously this is how I feel. No need to add unneeded pressure. If it happens let it happen naturally.

I think all current "Captains" should be renamed, "Joey."

I don't think it was ever BP's clubhouse. I think he wanted to be the captain, the Reds have championed him as the teams ambasador, but I have a feeling the clubhouse belongs to Rolen and Votto.

If your going to committ to Votto until he is 38 I think you give him the C. Maybe not this season but I would do it by next year.

IMO, a captaincy in MLB is an honorific that's issued as a stopgap because it's too soon to retire the player's number. The Reds aren't yet at a point where they're certain to retire Votto's number, so I voted "no."

Exactly - In Hockey captains are "supposed" to be the only people to talk directly to the refs, so there is an actual purpose to that position. In football they run out onto the field at the beginning of a game because you need 4 players to call a coin flip.

Maybe in 2020, if this becomes Joey's team, he is well on his way to going to Cooperstown and having his number retired THEN you give him his due with naming him captain.

I think it's entirely up to the members of the team...not management, just the players. If they feel he's their captain and vote that he be asked to wear the 'C', then so be it. Until then, there's really no point in discussing it. :beerme:
