Nice. Lead is now at 4.5 for the Reds. Cardinals to be at 6.5 barring a 9th inning meltdown.

It's 6.5 now, it would be 6.

And it means we would have lost 1 game to the Cards on this road trip, none to the Pirates.

What is the deal with Westbrook and his performance this year?

I am hoping he burns out like Jack Billingham used to in September of 1973-75. Westbrook reminds me of Jack as a pitcher and his stuff.

It's fireworks night at PNC Park; I can hear it from my house. Not for a win though. OH WELL.

This pretty much sums up why he's having success this year:

http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfx.aspx?playerid=412&position=P

He is using significantly more types of pitches than in any other year. His sinker is still his prime go to pitch but he's using his slider a lot more this year. I've been noticing that it seems to keep a lot of batters off balanced.

Jeez, the Pirates TV announcers sound like they just got back from a funeral. A little life, guys.

After the Reds win 10 straight, they go into a five game loosing streak giving Pittsburgh the opportunity they've dreamed of since the All-Star break. So where does that leave the Buccos? The same 4.5 GB that they were 7 days ago when they left Cincy. I can see why they aren't turning catwheels.

5 days ago...the team was in a spiral, and the bullpen was overworked.

Now they have a 4.5 lead, Cueto on the bump tomorrow, a very well rested bully, and Monday off to come to Cincy for some home cookin.

It's a very nice spot to be in, hopefully setting up a fantastic homestand.

The Pirates' starting pitching is crashing back to earth so hard, scientists actually reported tremors along the West Coast this morning.

On the Padres pregame, they mentioned that the Padres had won 11 straight at PNC. I checked it and it was correct. Over that span the Pads have outscored them 86-33. SD has already plated 4 in the top of the first today.

Cards down 2-1, Phillies have runner on 3rd, no outs, bottom of the 1st.

Update, 3-1, runner on 1st, still no outs.

Cards have a very tough schedule for the rest of the season, including a west coast trip in September. If they win this division, they will truly have to earn it. Trail early in Philly 3-1 today.

Pirates undergoing a PNC correction.

Yup, you're right. For some reason, even though I know our odds are good, they still scare the hell out of me. Life without Votto makes Cincrazy vulnerable and scared :(.

Maybe the Pirates and Padres should swap entire teams? The Pittsburgh Padres would go undefeated at home. And San Diego will have a much better team.

Pitt is not SD in regards to the ballpark factors but it is not GABP either. There is some bad pitching going on this weekend, other than the CG shutout from last night.

Tom Servo

Oh I knew the SD pitching was bad, but 9 runs in an inning? I think you could have a guy like Brad Radke who's been retired for like 7 years go out and pitch better than that.

Pierre may not be in Cincy, but he's pitching in for us during this pennant race regardless :). What a huge way to end that road trip. We start 0-4, but finish with 3 straight wins, and in the process don't drop a single game to the Pirates or the Cards while on that trip.

Pirates starting pitching fulfilling prophecy or bump in the road? MacDonald and Bedard have been awful, Karstens has been ok of late, he doesn't have many innings in due to injury. Burnett tasted a bad start last night. Wandy has been ok, but he's clearly not going to close the gap MacDonald and Bedard have been leaving. Clint Barmes grand slams are once a season. The starters have to pitch once every five days.

With that said, the Pads, we thank you. Their offense seems to be legit as it is currently constructed.

I find it amazing how some really bad pitchers can just hang on and on and on with a major league team. When I saw that the Padres had a 5-0 lead with Olendorf pitching I knew the Pirates still had a good chance at that game. You would think the Padres would have someone at AAA or AA just a little better than him?

Trading for Vadez allowed us to stash Janish at AAA and eventually move him for Redmond. Horst had already been placed on waivers by us and no one claimed him. Redmond will be pitching a major league game for us Saturday. Horst wasn't going to make our staff out of sprong training, and would have gone on waivers anyway.

Wow. Randy Choate just made an unbelievable self-defense catch of a liner heading right for his head. The catch saved what would have probably been a 2-out, run-scoring single for the Pirates in the bottom of the 7th.

It's still 4-2 Dodgers heading to the 8th.

One more thing. If you have a smartphone (iPhone, Android, or some Blackberrys), spend the $15 (at least on iPhone) and get MLB At Bat. Got the Dodger PBP (could have had the Pirate PBP, but can't stand it) and was able to get the game with Charlie Steiner calling the game. It was the free game of the night on MLB-TV, so I could see too. While the local stations were showing the hated Braves, I had a game I was interested in. The age we live in is amazing!

Yes, but unfortunately, the competition for the Bucs is much easier in September than it was in August.

Pirates are currently on an eleven game homestand, but they split with DBacks, lost two of three to Padres, now lost first to L.A.

In September, the Pirates play five teams. Reds. Brewers, Cubs, Astros, Mets. On balance, an easy schedule although a number of the games are road.
