Going into Monday's game, the number was 12. Here's a good site from some math geeks at Berkeley. They have the whole schedule entered, and it accounts for things like teams having to play each other and thus it being impossible for both to win or lose that particular game:

http://lyle.smu.edu/~olinick/riot/national_league.html

Quoting:
Since Baltimore and New York are tied for first place in the AL East with identical records, neither team has a traditionally calculated magic number. However, if either team wins 26 of their remaining 27 games, they will clinch first place. This is because they still have a four-game series left on the schedule. For example, suppose Baltimore wins 26 more games. That would have to include at least three wins against New York. The final win totals in this scenario would be 102 for Baltimore, and at most 100 for New York. Therefore, RIOT reports that Baltimore has a first place clinch number of 26. Using the same logic, New York's first place clinch number is also 26.

Tampa Bay does not have a traditional magic number because they are not in first place. However, they have a four-game series left with New York, and a six-game series left with Baltimore. If they win all 26 of their remaining games, then they will win the division with 101 wins while New York has at most 99 wins and Baltimore has at most 97. Therefore, RIOT reports that Tampa Bay's first place clinch number is 26.

I don't think you need a Berkeley education to come up with those calculations. I bet in April if one team won 160 out of 162 games they'd be in first place

Is it too early to start this....

If the Reds go on a 6 game winning streak, and the Cards go on a 6 game losing streak as of today, we will clinch when we win that 6th game on Tuesday night in Chicago.

I love it, when it gets this close that we can realistically start calculating a day it *may* happen.

I'm gonna be at the park for the 9/22 and 9/23 games vs. The Dodgers. I would love to be able to see a clincher. Although if they clinch sooner than that I certainly wouldn't complain. :)

I'm secretly pulling for St. Louis to win a couple this week so they can clinch at home. (shhhh....don't tell anyone)

It's definitely feasible, though.

My guess is somewhere from the 20th through 22nd. I'm going to the 27th, so I'd love it to be then, but also hoping it doesn't take that long at this point!

I'd like to see it on either the 21st or the 23rd since I'll all ready be at both games, but I also have tentative plans to head downtown during the Brewers series if they potentially clinch during one of those games. If it happens at home again, I am NOT missing it, LOL  :D

A little research showed that the first year the number appeared on the front of the jersey was in 1956. Here's the first player to wear such a uniform, back up catcher Dutch Dotterer in 1957. He played for the Reds until 1960 when he was traded to the Kansas City A's, who then left him unprotected in the expansion trade and he was taken by the Senators. His son, Mike, played for the L.A. Raiders in the 1984 Super Bowl.

You wonder if a player like this might occasionally slip into a conversation, "my numbers was retired by the Reds."

The Reds forever were terrible about retiring the numbers of former greats. Morgan in one of his books early on wrote something along the lines that he was insulted that the Reds didn't retire his number so if they did in the future he would refuse to accept it or show up for the ceremony. Obviously he came around.

yeah, I've been thinking since the number was around 15 that it was going to happen in Chicago. Even if it happens prior to Friday, I imagine that the park will be a party atmosphere that night welcoming them home.

The first Red to wear #6 was outfielder and HOF'er Chick Hafey who was traded over to the Reds for the 1932 season following a contract dispute with the Cardinals Branch Rickey (side note: there are an awful lot of players on the 1932 team who were with the Cards at some point in their career).

As has been the case for each player of this team which wore numbers for the first time, it's rare to find a photo showing the number.

Looks like it was Johnny Temple in his final season 1964. A little further investigation showed that Temple came back to the Reds in '64 as a player and part-time coach. It seems things didn't go well (a fight with another coach?) and he was released in July after only appearing in a small number of games. Temple is seen in #18 in all of the pictures I found, but in 1964, Gordy Coleman already had that number.

BTW, the first Red to wear number 5 was the legendary Babe Herman. You really should read up on this colorful character. His best years, as I recall, were with the Dodgers. Good hitter, fielding might make Adam Dunn look good.

Willard Hershberger, of course.

I was going to mention this earlier, but the Reds briefly retired the number 5 following Hershberger's suicide. They began using it again in 1942 when catcher Dick West wore it.

The first Reds player to wear the number 4 was Harvey Hendrick, who played 1st base for the '32 Reds. He was actually traded to the Cardinals in April of that year (in the trade that brought Chick Hafey over) and then purchased back two months later.

Have to do some research on the 1956 number four - I'm guessing it's a coach, but Baseball Almanac doesnt' list the coaches numbers.

Does anyone have any idea why Lombardi wore #3 on this occasion?

Ernie wore many different numbers while with the Reds, #7, 27, 17, 2, 35 and finally #4 ('39-'41). He went on to wear #5, 9, 8 and 6 for other teams after being traded after the 1941 season.

But never #3. I guess Ernie strikes me as a guy who would wear whatever number the clubhouse guy gave him!

The first player to wear the number 1 for the Reds was George "Boots" Grantham, who primarily played 2nd base for the club in 1932. This isn't a picture of him in the 1932 uniform, but rather a trading card that features a blue Reds uniform. Not sure if they stylized this for the card or whether the team actually had a blue lettered uniform in 1933.
