With the Reds moving into a tie for first with the Cardinals and in possession of the best pythag differential in baseball I thought I would start the annual Reds Magic Number thread.

That is our number vs. Pittsburgh, the 2nd place team. The CBS Sports standing page, HERE (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/standings), has the magic number vs. each team. That number is on the left in (). For example, our number vs. the Cardinals is 47.

Thanks for verifying it for me. I found a site that explained the math and I figured it at this number. Obviously, as many of us have said, the team has to take care of business. Win our games and let the others fall where they will.

As of the end of play tonight, the Pirates and Cardinals are tied with identical records, so this is our number against both teams. But since Pittsburgh was a game ahead of the Cards when we noted 41 last night, and last night our number vs. the Cards was 40, we still get to shave 2 games off the Pirates magic number tonight.... hence 39, and one game off the Cards number, also now 39.

Correct. The magic # was 32 coming in to eliminate either Pitt or St. Louis. The # to eliminate Pitt is currently 30 but St. Louis is 31. If St. Louis holds on to their lead the magic number to eliminate the Astros will drop to 2 however.

The Houston Astros' "tragic number" is at 2, meaning as early as tomorrow they could become the first team eliminated (at least from division championship contention).

No one else is really all that close yet: The Cubs' tragic number is 11, the Marlins' is 18.

34 games left, plus one, minus six games advantage in loss column = 29 according to my math.

But MLB.com has all the numbers in standings...just in case.

29 for the Cardinals, 28 for the Pirates, 19 for the Brewers, 9 for the Cubs and the Astros are already eliminated.

The "Running Man" of the 70's and 80's was, for some reason, always #27.

And for many years, from Gene Locklear in 1973, up until Jose Rijo joined the team in the late 80's, there was no #27 on the team.

I have no idea, other than Running Man first showed up in either 1968 or 1969.

This site (which is great) has a smattering of old Reds logos from the past, especially as you scroll near the bottom:

Yes the b/w action shot is Carbo. The posed one above that is Gus Bell (though I am guessing the autograph gave that away.)

My favorite uni's.

Why all the nostalgia for the pullovers? There's a reason why every team has gone away from them - they're atrocious. The '91 unis the Reds wore in Philly earlier this month brought all sorts of warm and fuzzy comments on Twitter and elsewhere, though I'm not sure why.

Give me today's uniforms (and uniform font) any day, thanks.

The "Big Bopper from Birmingham." One of my favorite players as a kid. Loved the way his batting helmet bounced all over the place when he ran the bases. What a beautiful uniform! 1969! All that texture that the old flannel blends had. Love the belt loops! Pristine stirrups and pants. The blousing is perfect! Love the MLB patch on the sleeve. Simply made for some gorgeous photos.

His first public political/ cultural trials were in '66 so maybe that is how rookie eligibility was decided for Soviet leaders. I think Andropov never used up his eligibility despite his cup of coffee in the big time of the Politboro.

Curiously both May and Brezhnev ended their careers in 1982.

He's always been a favorite of mine too. Back in the 80's I took two of my nephews to a rookie league game in Johnson City, Tn. After we sat down I noticed waking into the stadium was none other than the Big Bopper. He was there to see his son play for the Kingsport Mets. He and, I assume, his wife sat down across the aisle from us. My nephews didn't know who he was and I told them he was a former Red. They had brought a ball to try and get some of the rookie leaguers to sign. But after I told them who he was they ask him to autograph that ball. He was very courteous and seemed very pleased to sign the ball for them. I always appreciated that.

The '69 expansion expos won 52 and finished 48 behind the Mets. In Divisional era of the NL the closest I could find so the Astros may have a chance to make history on their way out of the Senior Circuit....

The '62 Mets won 40 and were 63 behind the pennant winning Giants...

Some of those Padres and Braves GB standings in the 70's were incredible for sure, but the Astros are redefining futile.

I asked him if that was his last name because I couldn't believe that they had made a Ron Plaza jersey back in the day but he said that wasn't his name. Yes, but presenting it anywhere reactivates the jinx. Or so they tell me on Twitter. Truth be told, I really didn't know because I quit subscribing to SI about ten years ago. So Mea Culpa.

Maybe the jinx is over. Last year was the jinx and we're over it now, but Joey is out and seems to be not ready after a long stint than expected in the minors. So maybe not. I still remember the 1962 edition of SI, right after the Reds had gone to the World Series the year before. The cover (as I remember it) headline was "The Reds Are Dead." It was in referral to Gene Freese, the third baseman who had a tremendous 1961 and was a cornerstone of the pennant, getting a broken ankle in Spring Training. The 62 Reds won 98 games, but finished 3 games or so behind the Giants and Dodgers. It warped me. I remember the SI additon that announced how the Reds got Griffey complete with Junior's picture on the cover. You know the result. God forbid we ever get a cover again.

I've been going back and looking for the Reds players who first wore the various uniform numbers. Unfortunately most are head on shots, so the numbers aren't showing. But today's had an interesting little tidbit. The first Reds player to have #14 when they began having numbers in 1932 was Si Johnson, a pitcher. His claim to fame was being the last pitcher to strikeout Babe Ruth when the Reds played the Boston Braves in 1935. And a personal aside, I see he began his career the year my parents were born and finished it the year they both graduated from high school.

Go Barry!

Going into Monday's game, the number was 12. Here's a good site from some math geeks at Berkeley. They have the whole schedule entered, and it accounts for things like teams having to play each other and thus it being impossible for both to win or lose that particular game:

http://lyle.smu.edu/~olinick/riot/national_league.html

Quoting:

Since Baltimore and New York are tied for first place in the AL East with identical records, neither team has a traditionally calculated magic number. However, if either team wins 26 of their remaining 27 games, they will clinch first place. This is because they still have a four-game series left on the schedule. For example, suppose Baltimore wins 26 more games. That would have to include at least three wins against New York. The final win totals in this scenario would be 102 for Baltimore, and at most 100 for New York. Therefore, RIOT reports that Baltimore has a first place clinch number of 26. Using the same logic, New York's first place clinch number is also 26.

Tampa Bay does not have a traditional magic number because they are not in first place. However, they have a four-game series left with New York, and a six-game series left with Baltimore. If they win all 26 of their remaining games, then they will win the division with 101 wins while New York has at most 99 wins and Baltimore has at most 97. Therefore, RIOT reports that Tampa Bay's first place clinch number is 26.

Granted that to just make the playoffs, the magic number may be 11. However, I'm still guessing that we want to focus on winning the division, especially under the new playoff rules. When all you get for winning a wild card is a play-in game against the other wild card winner, the wild card is less desirable than ever.

I will also guess that no champagne corks will fly in the Reds clubhouse until the number is down to 0 against their central division competition.

Therefore, I believe the correct number for this thread remains at 12.
