I thought Keppinger was a good pick-up for them, but cleanup batter on opening day? Really?

As well as being the Rays DH.

Keppinger has a career line of .324/.371/.481/.852 against lefties and Sabathia is starting, so I don't think it should be that shocking. The one thing Keppinger does really well is crush left handed pitching, so why not?

Kepp's had a pretty good career for a utility guy. There's a tendency to dismissively label him scrappy, but he's a solid talent. A bit of a tweener, but fills a role well.

'Course his story's really told by his WAR; total offensive war 3.9; defensive war -0.8. That can be a problem if you are looking for a regular middle infield job.

It wouldn't be as much of a problem if he had any power. You almost must have hitting power to pitch in MLB.
