Police say Young was standing outside of the Hilton New York, not far from Times Square. A group of about four Chicago tourists staying there were approached by a panhandler wearing a yarmulke. As the group walked up to the hotel doors, Young started yelling anti-Semitic epithets. Police say it's not clear who he was yelling at, but he got into a tussle with one of the Chicago group, who sustained scratches to his elbows.

I'm shocked, he has no issues with assaults and "anger issues"

I wonder if this is the end of what's been a tremendously disappointing career? If that report is true, I hope it is.

Because someone sustaining scratches to their elbow is enough reason to cause someone to never be able to work in their chosen profession again? I don't see how this can be considered a "hate crime".

I think it is considered a hate crime because it involved the use of racial language/insults prior to the altercation.

Hate crime classification is so stupid. If you commit a violent act on someone, the reasons are irrelevant.

Right. There is hate going on if there is a crime committed against someone else. Does it really matter if it was because they were a different ethnicity or because their girlfriend won't date you?

I see you've decided to drop Helen of Troy theory...is that peer reviewed?

It's not about the victim. It's a crime to commit battery on another person regardless. But If the crime is committed in an effort to intimidate or send a message to a larger group then it would merit a larger punishment. Perhaps the hate crime is overused, but unfortunately it's often times necessary.

Probably an elbow model. Deserves millions of dollars for that scratch, Good for our wonderful legal system!

I hear people from all political stripes sharing this view. Lots of conservatives have this view. Bill Maher has this view. I don't.

State of mind matters. It's the reason why almost every society punishes an intentional killing more severely than an accidental one. To a lesser extent, I'm fine with our legal system punishing an assault in a hate crime more severely than an assault in the context of a bar fight.

I can't stand Delmon Young's game, and because he was such a promising amateur, I wonder if substance abuse hasn't affected his growth curve. If you have anger issues, it's difficult enough to manage them if you're sober.

Meh. If a person commits a crime against a person of a different race, creed, religion or orientation to "send a signal" to the larger group, wouldnt that mean he would prefer to get caught to advertise this act? Otherwise, it's one on one and serves no purpose towards the larger group.

Defining crime as hate crime is goofy. A crime is horrible regardless of the actors involved.
