View Full Version : Reds Golf Score

Reds are at a +1 (9-9 thru 2 holes)

11-11 thus far on the 3rd hole.

Need to win 3 in the next 5 to keep par.

The first hole was a double bogey (3-6).

On pace for a 84-78. Kind of subjective, but I say 90 wins is about par. So on pace for a +6.

I can change "par" to anything though so feel free to recommend a different number.

Smith, I think Par being at about 90 makes the most sense. Not only is that what it takes to win the division, but it's a relatively stable goal for each 9 game stretch.

Good stuff. I always like this.

It technically should be the wild card record but I hate moving goalposts.

I like 90 for par too. It just makes sense. 5-4 is par for a hole. You aren't thrilled with par, but it doesn't hurt you.

Par should be much lower. Par is a relational score, half the teams should be above it and half below it. 81 should be par. But I'd be ok with 84.

I would rather strive for 5-4 as a marker for how well your team is doing as it relates to playoff teams

90 was par when this was done previously. It's clean and works perfectly with the 18 hole concept.

I prefer to count losses, so that makes par 72, which makes much more sense to me.

Sometimes par is good enough.

Also, I have exciting news! I have submitted to the Apple AppStore an app that will give you a leaderboard of all the teams and their golf score as well as each team's performance. I have it slated as $1.99 (it's pretty niche) but here's some screenshots.

It's the Dodgers because they are currently leading the leaderboard and so it was easier to just show them in the screenies.

Love it.

As you move forward, the hole by hole par could be tweaked due to matchups, pitchers, injuries, etc, and the 9 and 18 hole par determinations could also be determined by weak teams, home/ away schedule/ west coast swings, et al.

For example, IMO, the Reds have actually done better than -1 because they've played an extremely tough schedule so far. Last 18, they play 7 games against teams with a plus run differential and 11 games away from the cozy confines of Great American. They also faced the top starter of opposing teams five times. I'd guess that looks like a par score of 73, maybe 74.

The next 18-- with six road games and every home series against teams with a negative run differential-- should be a par 70 or even 69.

Holy moly Scrap... I wouldn't even know how to begin of such an algorithm. haha. It's a moving goalpost though and im not a huge fan of that. Some stuff could be subjective as the season progresses.

Thanks for the ideas though and I will think about how some of those things could be implemented.

On a golf course, their are Par 3's, 4's and 5's. I wouldn't see it as moving the goalpost, it would just make it more of a golf course IMO :)

Awesome stuff, Smith. It might be helpful to see a little more info to put the golf score in context. Such as:

Week: 1 2 3 4
Games: 6 7 6 5
Par (L): 3 3 3 2
Team (L): 2 4 4 0
Score: -1 E +1 -2
Total: -1 -1 0 -2

You might also use some of that real estate above/below the score table to explain how it works. It's not completely intuitive since the approach involves keeping score in terms of minimizing losses instead of maximizing wins. Pointing out that "Par" means the team is on pace for a 90 win season and that each point below par is a win above 90 games would help.

I really like the approach, but the whole low is good thing throws a wrench in it in terms of easy interpretation. The more you can do to mitigate/address that the better. Maybe even on "on pace" a translation in the standings table.

I guess I looked at it in a "glass half empty" pov didnt i? haha. I mean, I could focus on "5 wins is par" but I compared losses as a swing, ya know? The less swings, the better.

Yes, but everyone gets the same hole.

It's a little like black magic to have to change every single teams par based on competition for the purposes of this app. I'll leave that to the sabremetric guys to determine that.

This is just a fun way to break a season down into chunks and use the idea of golf to add interest.

I agree with you Smith. The difficulty of each 9 game "hole" is more akin to the handicap of the hole on a particular course. In the end, everyone plays the

To change from a Par 4 to a Par 5 or a Par 3, it would likely require you to carve up the schedule into different sized nuggets which would require far more work than would likely be worthwhile.
