Reds:

Ron Oester (56) -I think he still works in the White Sox organization.

Tommy Helms (71) -Rookie of the Year in 1966. It's odd that he and Oester share a birthday since they have so much else in common.

Others:

Hideki Irabu -Son of an Okinawan woman and an American serviceman whom he never knew. Struggled with alcohol abuse. Committed suicide last July after learning that his wife was leaving him.

Larry Hisle (65) -Twins outfielder. While serving as Blue Jays hitting coach in 1993, he coached the top three hitters in the A.L.- John Olerud, Paul Molitor and Roberto Alomar. Wonder if anyone else has done that...

Bob Cerv (86) -Football star at Nebraska turned part-time slugger for the Yankees. Traded to Kansas City, where he had a great year, so the Yankees reacquired him (as you probably know, this kind of thing went on frequently between those two teams).

Chief Bender -Half-Chippewa from Minnesota who attended the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, Jim Thorpe's alma mater. Part of the A's great rotation with Plank, Waddell, and Coombs.

Larry Hisle was an outstanding basketball player at Portsmouth High School in the 60's, and probably could have gotten a college scholarship.

Two of Hisle's teammates on his American Legion team were Al Oliver (also from Portsmouth) and Gene Tenace (from Lucasville).

Wasn't Cerv Mantle and Maris' roommate in 1961? That must have been an interesting house to live in.
