Leake better be on his game. This Pirate's pitcher has been pretty stout his last two outings.

CU2morrownite
05-05-2012, 05:43 PM
This should be Leake's "trial" start if you will. If he has a bad outing it's time elevate Chapman's role either as the closer or a rotation role. Chapman too good to be used as a lefty specialist or set up man. Marshall is more comfortable as the 8th inning guy and Aroldis would relish the chance to start or close games out.

News flash..The Cardinal's are still good. Time to start defining the roles of impact players on this team.

Leake better be on his game. This Pirate's pitcher has been pretty stout his last two outings.

He also went 114 pitches last game, so he's apparently on a fairly long leash. Working the count is always good, but the offense is ultimately going to have to put up some runs to force him out of the game.

It also appears that McCutchen is back in the lineup for the Pirates after missing the past few days from illness.

Leake's been ok, but the Pirates can't hit at all. That is why this start was so big. He can't get through a game vs. them, time to close the barn door.

Whatever he has over Dusty and Jocketty to continually be in the starting line up I haven't a clue. His collision with Hee Sop Choi clearly ruined his swing as his offense has declined every year since....Yeah I get he's a "leader" in the clubhouse but...10 of the last 11 losing seasons....He's been done for the last 3 years. Phillips has been very open about not like the cleanup spot. He says he feels he needs to do more with power and less of what he's best at.

But Dusty doesn't care.

Bat
Bruce
Fourth

We aren't blessed with Braun, Miggy Cabrera, Kemp or Tulo....Bruce is the best option and it's so easy....but a 7th inning potential matchup prevents Dusty from being able to do this.

We have two options -- move Votto to the two spot, or have our only two lefties hit back-to-back. I'm not a fan of either option, but you definitely can't bat Votto second, and as you said the late inning match-up problem is huge. So what do we do? The cleanup spot is killing us, regardless who we put there. Phillips and Rolen have to heat up -- or at least one of them. They are the two biggest holes in our offense right now.

The Reds knew they needed a 4 hitter during the off-season, so they picked-up Ludwick, Valdez and Wee Willie Harris, not one of them is hitting over .200:laugh:
Ludwick in the line-up = 0-4; the same as Leake starting = Lost...where is Jonny Gomes when you need him? Gomes is cheaper and more productive than Ludwick, imo:(

Whats moving a guy down in the rotation going to do? He will still start every 5th day. With what these guys get paid, guys dont just get shut down. maybe at the end of a season for an innings limit, but very rarely do you here a starting pitcher with a track record of being a slow starter to the season get shut down. Pitching hasn't been the problem, its the offense.
