This is the infamous Mother's Day Massacre. The Reds scored six in the first inning (four of them on a grand slam by Reggie Taylor) and two more in the second to take a commanding 8-0 lead before the Cardinals clawed their way back. The Cards scored three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-5. Then in the eighth, the Cardinals got another rally going, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Enter Reds reliever Danny Graves, who immediately gave up a two-run double to Placido Polanco, a game-tying RBI double to Fernando Viņa, and a two-run homer to J.D. Drew before striking out Gene Stechschulte.
