Reds are getting desperate:

Melvin Mora told Venezuelan newspaper Líder en Deportes that he will fly to the United States this weekend to begin negotiations with the Giants and Reds.
The story was passed along by MLB Trade Rumors. Mora said his agent received offers from both teams last week, but he didn't yet know the terms. The 40-year-old reportedly turned down a minor league offer from the Rangers in February because he preferred to sign with a team on the East Coast. He batted just .228/.244/.276 in 135 plate appearances last season for the Diamondbacks.

Reds are getting desperate:

Could be a sign the Reds expect Rolen to be out for an extended period.

To do what? Be a cigar store Indian at 3B? That's an insult to the cigar store Indian.

Mora the same from the Reds.

It can't happen because Melvin Mora is not a former Cardinal.

He was a high OBP guy with an above average glove up until last year. Not sure he has anything left in the tank, but worth a minor league contract, imo.

PLAYOFFS?! Don't talk about playoffs!

I thought by the thread title the Reds were firing Dusty and hiring Jim Mora to manage.

Playoffs? Playoffs?

They are shopping in the right department, but they need to step away from the bargain bin.

On Redlegnation, there's a quote that says giving Dusty a 40 year old Melvin Mora is like giving a toddler a blowtorch.

I found that rather amusing.

I hated the Cairo and Hairston signings, I guess I'll hate this one too if it happens.

Probably multiple sons. IIRC, he and his wife had sextuplets while he playing in Baltimore. Hard to believe the Reds would sign him. He would have to go to Louisville for extended time too to get into shape. I really think he is done though.

Why not Sean Burroughs? He sucks too, but at least he isn't 50. Twins DFA'd him recently.

Quintuplets, but only 2 are boys. Unfortunately, I think they're only 11 years old. Considering they're from Venezuela, that probably makes them 14 or 15.

I knew it was multiple births but couldn't remember exactly how many. Just about signing age for Venezuelans.

Does Walt believe Mora would actually outhit Todd Frazier at this point in his career? I certainly don't.

I think Farney could come back and outhit Mora at this point.

I don't get it. What's wrong with Frazier? Either stick with him (my preference) or trade for Youkilis. No thanks to Melvin Mora.

The Reds have made some bad moves, but I like to give them credit for a little intelligence. Frazier has done ok, more than ok, they aren't dumping him for Melvin Mora.

Some GMs like veterans on the bench in a stretch drive. So, for example, the Mike Constanzo spot could go to a veteran like Mora. Possibly. If anything, that would be the kind of move we're talking about here.

This is like a Jim Edmonds bench acquisition a few years ago, if it happens. Nothing to worry about IMO.

I think you've hit the nail on the head and have astutely named what interest the Reds might have. I can't believe it's taken two pages to arrive at this simple conclusion.

I really liked Mora a few years ago and wouldn't mind having him on the bench. It's just that I have to think he'd be replacing Costanzo. While that's something that likely needs to be done, it would require him playing third occasionally. Maybe he still can, but it seems that in the post steroids era 40 is the new 45.

Mora might play third better than Cairo in a pinch.
