Thanks for posting this. Some great old calls. Some of them do sound like the chipmonks are doing them. I don't how that could happen. But still really good to listen to. Lots of players you nearly forgot about. Also a lot of "get out of here!!" in the background. Gotta love that.
I have record albums of the highlights of the 1975 and 1976 seasons. A lot of those are on these recordings. I could probably pick out nearly every one of those from those albums because I listened to them so much when I was younger.

Throw out 82,83 and 1984 up unti Rose came back and the 1980's weren't too bad. They came in 2nd from 1985-88 and maybe in 1989 too. Also had the best record in baseball in 1981 but couldn't go to the playoffs because of that silly two half season thing.

Thanks for posting this. I have that 76 highlights album on an LP someplace that I used to play all the time when I was a kid. I think I also have the 75 highlights on a tape someplace. I probably have them buried in a closet someplace but I would have no equipment to play them on now anyway.

As far as that "Chipmunks" effect I remember some of that sound on those highlight records too. I think it was something to do with how they transferred the radio broadcast to a record they probably had the speed slightly off which led to that effect.

The shortest hit is the "Baltimore chopper" off the front edge of home plate. This one can travel one inch forward if it goes 50 feet up and quivers and the runner leaves like his house is on fire.

The Dave Collins triple at the 2:11 mark was part of the 5th straight win for the Reds to start the 80' season. They ended up winning their first 8 games to start the season. I remember listening to it late at night in bed and jumping up and down when they won.


Also if you notice Marty didn't say "and this one belongs to the Reds". He may have later but didn't at the time of the call.

"A Baltimore Chopper" I have to look that one up.

Made famous by the 1890s Baltimore team, they had one of the games fist innovative groundskeepers (Charles Murphy) he would dry out the spot on front of home plate until it was concrete and the boys would bounce the ball off it to obtain the chop. A good many of them became managers in the next decade... McGraw, Jennings, Kelly

I know some of the interviews with Bench were so sped up I had no idea it was him at first.

The 80s were weird. The Reds had some halfway good teams, some terrible teams, some teams that were close and some second place teams that were actually bad but Rose did seem to get a lot from what he had on a roster but he was a terrible handler of pitchers, imo. He rode Soto like a mule. Mostly though I remember the tremendous excitement when it was announced that Rose was returning to manage the Reds. Then the tremendous turmoil when he was kicked out and I wondered if Reds baseball would recover - and they won the World Series the following year!
