We cant lose a series to this pirates team

Why? This isn't the Pirates of old, they have some nice young talent, a decent pitching staff and improving. People need to wake up and see that the Pirates are not the dormats of the Central like the Cubs and even Brewers are at this point this year.

Fully expect to win tonight. Cozart and Frazier back in the lineup and way too many things went wrong yesterday.

With Morton pitching, it will hopefully be a good game for Bruce (1.153 OPS in 15 ABs) and Stubbs (1.010 OPS in 23 ABs). Ludwick and Frazier have also had some success against him, though in a much smaller sample size. No surprise Hanigan is sitting today- a .350 OPS in 12 ABs against Morton.

Hanigan is sitting because Mesco catches Bailey, no other reason.

Why does Stubbs start 34/35 games? Tonight, he's actually a good matchup according to the numbers....but why does Dusty ignore the numbers 5 out of the 8 times he doesn't match up well?

1. He's Fast

That is all.

I'm really glad for the kid, he took his lumps early in his career. Some of those lumps were self induced and some were based off expectations of being a high draft pick that was rushed to the big leagues. It looks like he has finally started to put it together.

I know he's thrown a lotta splitters tonight but I don't remember that pitch exactly.

When did Homer start throwing splitters anyway? He's got a good one.

I think the story goes that Justin Lehr taught him the splitter.

I'd argue most teams do not have a backup catcher that is the best option as a PH. This is the case for the Redlegs.

Yes, every manager lacks common sense if you extrapolate out texasdave's position on not utilizing your backup catcher as you would any other bench player.

And the backup getting hurt I think is part of it!

RedsFanInBama

The fear of extra innings.

I guess that's it. That or injury. I guess the thought is that if you have to put a second baseman at catcher, that will basically ensure a loss? Either way, the odds of the catcher having to be removed due to injury or the game going so long that a second catcher is needed is so low that it really doesn't make sense to let a solid bat waste away on the bench. But managers generally are pretty stubborn when it comes to things like that.

McCann does a lot. I've seen the 2nd catcher injured and unable to play once in my 30 years of watching and pretty sure it was the Braves back in the 80's......couple dozen times it would've been nice to PH Ramon Hernandez the past two seasons.

But he'll pinch run Meso.....lol No way to get injured sprinting full speed on a gapper after being pined all game.
