I cannot believe they haven't signed a pick yet! What the heck is Walt Jocketty doing?! He's too old to be a GM, I tell you! Probably asleep in his chair-- it's not like he's done anything this season to help the team anyway!

Grumble, grumble. Complain, complain. Harrumph, Harrumph.

Ridiculous, I tell you.

BC Shortstop Brent Peterson Will Sign With Reds: BC shortstop Brent Peterson, drafted in the 12th Round of the M... http://bit.ly/LGvbaI

Bakersfield College shortstop Brent Peterson was selected in the 12th Round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. He was the 382nd pick overall and will soon sign a contract with the Reds. Peterson had signed a letter-of-intent to play baseball at the University of Oklahoma but will instead sign with the Reds and report to their Rookie League affiliate in Billings, Montana. Peterson led BC in hits, runs, triples, stolen bases and batting average.

They must think they can coach a couple mile an hour to his fb or else he's just a soft tossing lefty that can't touch 90. I wonder sometimes who counsels these kids - Felt seems like exactly the type of kid who could really have benefitted from going to college for a couple years. Maybe his heart was set on pro baseball no matter what.

The Reds have signed sandwich pick Jesse Winker to a $1 million bonus. An outfielder from Olympia HS in Orlando, he's a quality hitter with the strength to have some power. He had been committed to Florida.Cincinnati selected Winker with the 49th overall pick, which carried a value of $1,025,900 for bonus-pool purposes.

There is a discussion on Rahier's facebook between him and Winker (who is a confirmed signee) about which hotel the two of them are staying at together. He also tweeted that he is leaving Indian Wells to "start pro ball."

Gelalich (1sb), Amaral (7), Mejias-Brean (8) and Pigott (9) are not signing as long as their teams are still alive in the CWS (at least another week) and I don't expect Kivel (10) to sign because of his injury. Conflicting info on the Felt bonus money. I'm more inclined to believe Jim Callis than the local reporter I quoted earlier.

The Reds signed fifth rounder Mason Felt to an over-slot deal worth $318K, Jim Callis of Baseball America reports (on Twitter). The high school left-hander has the potential for a plus fastball and curve. The Reds signed a number of other selections, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Competitive Balance Lottery to shake up Draft
Small-market, low-revenue teams to get chance at extra picks

The first lottery will take place in July, after the 2012 Draft signing deadline has passed. The 10 smallest-market teams and the 10 lowest-revenue teams will be placed in the lottery to have a chance to win one of six extra picks in 2013. This doesn't mean there will be 20 teams in the lottery. There will be plenty of crossover, with the expectation of having 13 teams involved.

There is one other lottery, one for picks forfeited by teams going over their allotted bonus pools. Any team going five to 10 percent over its pool gets taxed at 75 percent and loses a first-round pick. Anyone going 10-15 percent over gets hit with a 100-percent tax and loses a first- and second-round pick. Anything over 15 percent means a 100-percent tax and loss of first-round selections in the next two Drafts.

Any of those forfeited picks would go into a separate lottery. Any team that did not exceed its pool will be in that lottery. In this one, though, the odds are not just based on winning percentage, but on a formula of revenue and winning percentage.

I'm surprised it didn't take more than slot to sign Rahier. I figured he'd get closer to $750K. Some draft analysts (Keith Law) predicted he would be a first-round pick. (And not first-round compensatory ... one of the top 30 picks of the draft. I believe Law had Rahier going 24th overall. What a steal he appears to be.)

BA has just the 25,000 counting towards the draft budget. They are $296,000 under budget with the picks they have signed so far. They were $321,000 below before this signing.

You may spend up to $100,000 per pick on anyone drafted after the 10th round. Anything past $100,000 on each signing bonus counts toward the bonus pool for the first 10 rounds.

With three college positon players left to sign in the top 10 picks, they could stil save more. That could even be the reason we have not heard more about Gelalich and Amarla (Mejias-Bream is still playing). The club may trying to save some cap room and negotiating fairly toughly.

If they sign the remaining guys that were in college postseason (Gelalich, Amaral, Mejias-Brean, Boyd, Matthews) and possibly Housey and then add Ortiz - I'll be ecstatic. Ortiz is the one remaining HS guy where I wouldn't mind them spending a little over capa.

Draft Signings: Kivel, Reynolds
By Mike Axisa [June 25 at 8:13pm CST]
Let's keep track of the day's notable non-first and supplemental first round draft signings here, with the latest up top...

Baseball America's Jim Callis tweets that the Reds have signed tenth round pick Jeremy Kivel for a $500K bonus -- well above the slot recommendation of $125K. Kivel, a high school right-hander out of Texas, can throw his heater at 95 mph but missed most of this season due to a torn ACL.

Maybe I am off, but I have us with just $33,100 left over for the over slot signings.

Since we're all seeing how this new system works out, I don't think it would be surprising to see plenty of clubs going over at least up to the 5% point, where you only incur the 75% penalty. Basically once they've reached the bonus threshold, teams know that every dollar over is really $1.75. For the Reds that means we could go up to $332,690 and only pay the penalty. If I'm reading things correctly, exceeding 5% means we also lose a draft pick. I don't think we want that, but I could see them deciding that bringing in the players they want, their budget can allow that extra $250K penalty to get the players they want. I don't recall whether clubs going over also lose the opportunity to take part in the extra pool for smaller market clubs (I'm thinking not).

Reds Land Gelalich For $825,000

Posted Jun. 27, 2012 4:32 pm by Jim Callis
Filed under: Signings
The Reds have signed supplemental first-round pick Jeff Gelalich for $825,000.

After hitting a combined .284 with four homers in his first two seasons at UCLA, Gelalich led the Bruins to the College World Series by batting .351 with 11 longballs this spring. A right fielder, he has average or better tools across the board.

The assigned value for Gelalich's No. 57 slot was $897,800. Cincinnati also signed UCLA outfielder Beau Amaral (seventh round) for $146,000 and agreed to terms with Arizona third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean (eighth) for $125,000, wrapping up all of their picks in the first 10 rounds and leaving them $92,400 under their total bonus pool of $6,653,800.

21 of their first 25 picks signed and not going over their allotment? Wow is all I can say. Incredible draft - at least at this point in time. Good looking picks, good depth, quality, ceilings, some safety picks, some really high ceiling/high risk picks - overall a bit of everything. I really, really like it. Then they went out and got it done signing wise. Just a great job. Only time can finish the grade for the draft now.

Does anyone have any insight on what the holdup is with those two? Is Boyd considering returning to Oregon State for his senior season? Does Ortiz have some type of leverage I'm not aware of? I would think as a high school kid from Puerto Rico he would be looking forward to signing.

Oh well, no need to sweat the small stuff. Not only did the Reds have what looks to be a great draft, they backed it up by signing their top 14 picks (and many more). And they still have almost 3 weeks to sign Boyd, Ortiz and the other remaining unsigned picks.

My guess is that they and the club have been waiting to see how much of the bonus pot remains and what room that gives them for some added amount. For instance, as I noted earlier here, the club could decide that they're willing to pay the penalty going up to some amount to sign these other draftees.

Someone note, probably correctly, that while Boyd has the option of returning to school, it does not guarantee that he'll move up in the draft, the only place where he'll up his price tag. But maybe he can get double the $100K slot money (we gave Kivel five times his slot, as one example). As for Ortiz, the only thing I can find on him is that we drafted him and he's considered one of the top catching prospects. No info on where he's committed for college. I would assume he has, if for no other reason than to have some leverage.

My guess is these two will sign at higher than the stated slot money. If the running total is correct, we're about $92K shy of the cap and then we're paying 75% on every extra dollar. Given the amounts we paid in late round bonuses last year, I suspect we could choose to move into that range up to 5% and pay that price.

Anyone else surprised it didn't take more than slot to sign Tanner Rahier? For a guy that was projected to go in the first round, I would think he would have got more like $750K (instead of $649K) after going in the second round. But hey, glad everything worked out. Not only was this a great draft for the Reds, but the organization did a great job of getting everyone* signed.

Fay is hilariously behind the times when announcing these signings on Twitter. If he's going to tweet them, he should do it when everyone else finds out and simply post a disclaimer that the signings are unofficial. You know, like most other baseball writers do. I don't think there is anyone left who is a guy who would be a 'sleeper' type of guy. The new draft rules really changed that up this year. Ben Klimesh is the guy who may have the best talent among the post 10 round crew, but as a senior he signed quickly and had little leverage.

Vincej is a solid defensive guy and they could use some SS depth. Love the Ortiz signing. Doesn't hurt to sign a couple of solid catching prospects in every draft. Hudson and Ortiz are a pretty decent duo.

Would've liked to have seen them get Boyd too, but if that's our biggest disappointment in this draft, we're OK. Not a complaint at all, but I kinda surprised Adam Matthews didn't sign. I'm guessing maybe he was a fallback if one of the top 10 OFs didn't sign.

He is showing up on the AZL Reds roster.

Hmmm... hadn't seen that. Never saw where he had actually signed.
Good - thanks! 29 out of 42 - a solid showing. Guess #29 - Adam Matthews should be bolded too.

I imagine we can unsticky this thread now as well?

I'd kinda like to leave it up there for a while. It's handy as a reference, particularly when you come across a new name in a box score and want to see where the guy came from.

What about closing the thread then? It's just every time a new post appears, it's misleading because you think someone new has signed.
