If a day off rejuvenates a player, which I personally think is nonsense, then after the whole team has a scheduled day off shouldn't everyone get two or three hits?

We drafted a left-handed pitcher from Yale today.

Why would you think that a day off being beneficial is nonsense? Seems like common sense to me.

texasdave
06-05-2012, 08:30 PM
Then answer the question. When a team has a scheduled day off why don't they come out and score about a dozen runs? Everyone had a day off. They should all be rested and ready.

Because it's baseball and people fail 70% of the time!!!

Whatever.

RedsFanInBama
06-05-2012, 08:32 PM
Because there is not an automatic correlation between being rejuvenated and getting two or three hits. Lots of factors go into whether or not a player gets a hit, not the least of which is the opponent.

Why do pitchers need time off between starts? Lets just go with a three-man rotation for the rest of the year. Rest is bogus.

Command is whether you can get it over the plate. Then you want to control the plate. Then velocity/movement come in as the final determinate.

Depends. Getting the ball over the plate and then "controlling" the plate are 2 different things.

Mutaman
06-05-2012, 09:42 PM
David Cone says its all about recovery time. Give pitchers extra time to recover. He had no problem with Santana throwing a ridiculous number of pitches in the no hitter as long as he is given plenty of time to recover- maybe even miss a start.

Cone says hes a big believer in the Verduci rules but not so much on pitch count as on recovery time. He likes having six starters so as to give each pitcher more rest.

dubc47834
06-05-2012, 09:42 PM
Depends. Getting the ball over the plate and then "controlling" the plate are 2 different things.

I guess it depends on what definition of control you are using. Most people think of control as being able to throw the ball where they want it to go. I guess a pitching coach or someone like that might use your version and say you want to control a certain zone or something.

LOL, that's one for the "worst at bat of the year" page. Fouls off a ball thrown at him by mistake, takes a fastball right down the middle, swings at a ball in the dirt and misses it by two feet.

What's funny about that Heisey at bat is if you traveled into the future and taped the at bat, came back to the present, showed him the video so that he could see the pitches I'm still 50% sure he would swing at the 1st and third, and freeze up on the 2nd.

only thing good about the pitching is the bullpen, starting pitching is starting to become very bad outside of Cueto and a few starts by Leake

You could "Groundhog Day" that at-bat and it would turn out the same. Bill Murray as Chris Heisey. I like it. :)

Pitch recognition must be a gift. If the announcers know what pitch is coming you would think the players would as well.

Do you really believe the Reds are a better team "right now"? In two days we'll see if you feel the same way. I do hope so...but I'm starting to get that "2011 Reds feeling". I think tonight was more reflective of Homer Bailey than his last couple of starts. The offense (-Votto) is not making contact when RISP :(

Wrong on all accounts. Bailey had shoulder tightness. Clearly. No debate. He couldn't get loose and that is why he was pulled. Considering the almost week layoff and cool night, little surprise.

The Reds offense was its usual self. Sometimes teams get lucky. The Pirates had theirs.

Depends. He would have 200 innings under his belt then and a period of power pitching. He did ok during points in 2009-11, but the earlier parts of the season were problemsome.

I just don't like that excuse. I think Bronson pitched that way all last season.

Bailey worked hard to get into shape for the whole season.....flexibilty and strength. He's gotta come back firing next outing. Gotta get 12+ wins and 180+ innings
