Five catchers. One of them is Lhimmy Lopez, not to be confused with his teammate, Yimmy Lopez . . . Wait a minute. On further inspection, I think they should be confused. They have the same birth date. However, Lhimmy is 6-2, 190, and Yimmy is 6-0, 216. Hmm.

Same hometown. Looks like Like Lhimmy's real name is Jhimmy. So Jhimmy and Yimmy.

I wonder what Covington's health situation is like? Other than Garrett he's the pitcher that interests me the most.

Well, they've got a 3rd baseman named Jonathan Perez who, it appears, spent 3-4 very unproductive years in the DSL as part of the Diamondbacks organization. But no mention of Jonathan Perez, the Reds' top international signee from last year. Weird.

Could be quite the interesting pitching staff once the real J. Perez and Travieso are on it.

I swear it's getting like you can't tell the players without a scorecard! Oh wait...you can't tell the players without a scorecard!

Some observations and questions for those closer to the game. After subtracting 60 Day DL, I get the following makeup of the Billings and AZL rosters.

AZL: 17 Pitchers and 20 Position players (including 5 catchers)
BILL: 20 Pitchers and 15 Position players
and...there are several more signings yet to come.

That seems like a lot of pitchers to develop over a short season...not many innings to go around. Ditto for the position players at AZL. Does this reflect a shift in strategy toward developing more pitchers, more cautiously with fewer game innings pitched and more side sessions to work on mechanics? They are carrying extra catchers that could accommodate such an approach in the AZL. 2012 draft picks at Billings are likely to see limited innings so I would expect a core group to get the majority of innings.

Is there a limit to roster size for rookie level teams?

Does this foretell releases at the higher levels to make room for promotions?

Oh. Well, then, scratch Jonathan Perez from the post about guys you might be interested in.

A;do Guzman's a biggin (6-4/235). Wonder how good he is at making contact?

Even with the iinjury to Valor, I could still see them starting three SS's in the infield (Washington @ 2B, Peterson @SS and Rahier @3B).

It wouldn't shock me to see Winker brought back to Goodyear after the CWS. Especially if Gelalich, Amaral, Pigott and Matthews all sign (although I do agree that Gelalich may start in Dayton).

That's an interesting observation. If, indeed, it's a dedicated plan to allow for development, I'm impressed with the organization's foresight. I've long thought that it makes sense to draft and sign pitchers disproportionately because of 1) the attrition rate, and 2) the trade value, but this would be yet another reason--to allow guys to work on their skills without the complication of ballgames to pitch. The (very) early indication is that it seems to have worked for Stephenson.

The rookie rosters are 35, but you can only have 30 players active on a given day. However, if the other team agrees, you can use a player who is not on that days active roster.

A lot of the names get anglicized. I believe Lopez' anglicized name is Yimmy. Jhonatan Perez is now Jonathan Perez for example.

Jonathan Perez is now listed on the roster. So is Wandy Peralta, one of the pitchers who seemed to be worth watching with the DSL Reds the last couple years.

And they're down to one Lopez, a catcher spelled Jhimmy.

UH had him listed as an infielder and one of their recruits.

AVAIN RACHAL - INF - CYPRESS, TEXAS - CY-FAIR HIGH SCHOOL
"Avain is a kid that plays hard every time we have seen him play and really swings the bat. Avain plays for longtime coach Woody Champagne at Cy-Fair High School and is the cousin of UH associate head basketball coach Alvin Brooks."

Avain can play multiple positions and his get after it approach will fit right into our program."

I see Jonathan Perez, a 21 year old RHP on the roster. Presumably not a 3B or the 17 year old signee. Also, where is Oliviel Florentino- the top international signee from 2010?

Florentino is in the DSL. My guess is that the information on Perez is still confused with the other Jonathan Perez they had listed at 3B yesterday -- height, weight, age, etc.

Yeah, it looks like Perez is being Yimmied in reverse. While there were two entries for one Lopez, it appears they might have lumped two Perezes into one misidentified fellow. Or something like that.

No they aren't. There are no fans that watch the games either (ok, maybe 10 or so at each game).

That makes sense. I'm not sure how it works, but I guess it's just cheaper for clubs to throw them in a pile somewhere and let them perform their way onto a real team.

Do the more skilled players get sent straight to Billings?

Nice to see Elmer Dessens with gainful employment. Evidently, they're converted Wagner Gomez to the mond from behind the plate.

In general.....not always.... young, first time players from Latin America and High School go to Arizona, and college guys go to Billings. Billings is more advanced.
