Reds:

Babe Herman -A Red on a couple of occasions; the Reds originally acquired him in the same trade in which they got Ernie Lombardi. You all probably know Babe's deal: an excellent hitter and a legendarily poor fielder. He had a sense of humor about it; when he was told that someone was pretending to be him and passing bad checks, Babe said, "Take him out back and hit him a few fly balls. If he catches any, it ain't me."

Topsy Hartzell -A Red in 1900. Led the league in walks five times. Had eight RBIs in a game in 1911; a record that stood for over 20 years.

Others:

Elijah Dukes (28) -A typical Jim Bowden project; a toolsy guy who was just too messed up to function in civilized society. He was arrested earlier this year for trying to eat a baggie full of marijuana to avoid being arrested for posession.

Derek Jeter (38) -I don't know what depresses me more: the thought that he came close to being a Red (Gene Bennett, I think, was the scout that almost got down on his knees and begged for the pick), or the Wikipedia list of his romantic liaisons, which reads like a list of the world's hottest women (except for Mariah Carey).

Willard Brown -Negro League star who got a shot with the Browns at age 32 when the league finally integrated. Firts African-American to hit a home run in the American League.

Debs Garms -"Debs" was his real name; he was named after the famous Socialist Eugene Victor Debs. His brother was also named for a well-known Socialist. He was the first man to get a hit off of Johnny Vandermeer after the double no-hitters.

I don't know--Mariah Carey is older than anyone else on that list, but I wouldn't say she isn't "hot". (And remember, she was 26 when she was dating Jeter.) I prefer her to many of the others on that list.

Now bat-**** crazy, I'll give you. :D

Fresco Thompson, a 1931 teammate, observed: "He wore a glove for one reason: because it was a league custom."
