Anyone know why the Reds decided not to wear the red jersey yesterday as has become typical for day games at home? Manager's decision, starting pitcher's decision, bad record wearing them? What gives?

I don't know for sure but it seems like they wear the red jersey's for 1pm home games and the noon starts. Opening Day was a 4pm start and they wore the white jerseys, and I also remember another 4pm game where they also wore the white ones.

Maybe Fox TV may didn't want them to wear them, since it was a national broadcast? Red jerseys look terrible on standard-definition TVs and MLB needs every viewer it can get on these national broadcasts. That's why it's only been in the past decade of the TV era that the Reds have used red jerseys during the regular season.

That's something I did not know. Personally, I like the all white uniforms at home the best.

For the last three or four years they have been worn for all home day games (not including Opening Day).

I would like to see them wear the red jerseys for an occasional road game.

Disagree. Love our uniforms. Just wish they'd do away with the shadowing of the numbers and letters. Maybe make the names a bit bigger on the backs of the jerseys. Overall, I love the look of our team.

They need more red. They look like pajamas now. An all white uni is Ok, but with the players nor showing their socks and even the wishbone C being white, they look like Hospital employees. One of the great things about uniforms is color. A team named the Reds should have more red on their unis. One of the things I loved about the vest style uniforms was the was lots of red because of the red sleeves.

Agree on the pants being too long. That's something MLB needs to get a grip on and bring back the stockings or stirrups showing again on all clubs. U can proably thank Handy Manny Ramirez for that. I like white at home, grey on the road. Not big on the red jersey. The home whites have red piping and red pinstripe down the leg. So glad they went back to the all red cap. Wished they'd do away with the black billed cap on the road. Overall, I love 'em.

Agree with doing away with the road cap (go with just the all red cap), and also losing the black shadows on the letters and numbers (it worked for the Mets' uniforms). I also agree that the pants are way too long, and they need to show more sock (or preferably stirrups).

I like the red jerseys though, as long as they don't overdo it.

only bad uniform is one that changes every 7 to 10 years. Keep them forever, build a lasting brand. Our white home uni's and away grey are classy looking. Once we mix in a few division titles, that familiar brand will be built. People across the nation will know that look with success. We're on our way.

There was a turn-back-the-clock day last year where they had some really cool uniforms from, I want to say, the 50's. They were mostly white but had some red and blue on them. They were pretty sharp.

I'm not really offended by the pajama pants; I kind of like them.

I guess some like seeing manlegs more than me!

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Hey woy, any idea why the Reds as a franchise have changed uniforms so often, instead of sticking with something like other older franchises (Yankees, Dodgers, etc.)? I feel like there must be a story behind the first change(s).

Up until MacPhail came on the Reds were pretty pedestrian in their uniform changes.

I think the real issue is that the Reds had a unique style with the vests (and only team in MLB to ever have names UNDER the numbers) but when the style changed they changed.

The logo is the enduring image this franchise, the uniforms will likely change to reflect the times or the past.

They only wore them once, they were satin and designed to catch the light at night... the team only had 7 night games a year (one against every team) they wore them once and apparently heard a few hoots and never wore them again.

Brooklyn tried all satin jerseys about a decade later for the same reason.

I'd like the uniforms to stay as they are now with the exception that MLB makes players do away with the pants down to the shoes. The stockings are a big part of the uniform and the reason our name of Reds is what it is.

I liked the solid white hats with red bills (no pinstripes) that the Reds wore in the late 50's. I also liked the road gray cap from the same time period. I would be OK with either (or both) of them as an alternate cap to go with an alternate sleeveless uniform. (No pinstripes, though!)

You must not have liked the BRM uniforms much, because the current uni is very similar (though I agree that they should show more color in the stirrup/sock).

The old road grey caps and uniforms had the wonderful flannel texture that the current uniforms don't have. The throwbacks that they wore last year were the current knit but had a pattern in them that gave them the look of the old flannels. It looked great and I wish they would use the material all the time for the roads.

Not much. But they wore red stockings, red sleeves, and the letterin was bold and devoid of the riverboat font. On the gray unis red was outlined in white (if I remember correctly), so they looked classy. Present uniforms just too gimmicky and white for me, from the narrow red piping around the collar and buttons to the black shadow around the letters and numbers. Yuck

I think Hendrick, like Frank Robinson....had some skinny ankles and lower legs. The look they cultivated seems more to not show off the negative part of their leg..... at least that is what I thought.

The all Red blows.....the softball look of it.

If the NBA and NFL can have a dress code.....so can MLB...especially with the low rider pants issue.

The Reds could at least have Sunday throw back games ...every Sunday they are at home....with all styles going back from 1900. One Sunday it's 1905.....the next home Sunday it's 1935....then 1959.

I really liked the 1961 uniforms. The vests with the and story red sleeves. The C, which wasn't wishbone, had a dark blue center. They had the white cap with red bill, but adding the wishbone C and red had would be good. The sleeves of the vest was outlined in dark blue. These were similar to the one that Barry models above less the blue.

That uniform originally was designed with no outline on the vest openings. In 1961, the year they debuted , there was only one sleeve opening outlined, not in navy blue but in black. The black band was a tribute to then team owner, Powell Crosley, who passed away on the eve of the 1961 season. They eventually added the other black band to the uniform, the following season, I believe. The white caps were pinstriped with a red bill with the red oval "C" outlined in navy. The grey flannel road caps with the red bill had the identical oval "C". The grey uniforms had "CINCINNATI" arched across the front in red, outlined in navy blue. They also had the same vest opening band configuration. Names were added, below the numbers in '63 or '64. They wore this uniform through the 1966 season.

The Cincinnati Reds introduced night baseball in 1935 and in the following year they commissioned the Goldsmith Company to produce a special uniform for occasional game use in 1936 and 1937. It is not clear what inspired this so-called “Palm Beach” version (possibly, it was the advent of baseball under the arc lights) but it presented some interesting departures from long standing Reds’ uniform tradition. In place of the standard C-REDS logo, the name REDS appeared in the now-fashionable red script lettering on the left breast. And the real shocker was the combination of white jersey and BRIGHT RED pants, which was only one version of the new Palm Beach ensemble.

No pics of those old Reds uniforms there, and none of the uniforms seemed to have survived. Plenty of talk there and pictures of the other satin uni's from the 40's though, with a nice tip of the cap to the Reds for starting it off.

Here's a replication/mock up from the Uniwatch site:

In my opinion, those are the second best uniforms, ever after the '68'-'71 uniforms. I like navy blue as a secondary color, much better than black. Classic in every way. I wish they would use these uniforms as a secondary uniform on day games and Sundays, rather than the Red tops that they use now. I also like the 1956 road uni with "Old Red' on the vest, I have one of those and it is beautiful. The striped stirrups of that uniform are great as well. Not a fan of the home uniform in that picture, as I prefer "REDS" inside the wishbone "C".
