Ari Berkowitz at Beyond the Box Score came out with an article today on the subject (http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2012/7/19/3169763/which-teams-have-been-the-most-clutch).

Here is how the NL Central has played out so far:

MLB Rank Team Clutch WPA pLI WPA/LI
2 Pirates 2.41 2.38 0.97 0.04
5 Reds 2.08 1.65 1.02 -0.46
16 Brewers -0.53 1.89 1.06 2.31
22 Cubs -1.76 -3.53 1.00 -1.77
28 Cardinals -3.18 1.85 1.02 5.00
29 Astros -3.26 -6.92 1.01 -3.60

So far, the Pirates and Reds have been among the most clutch teams in baseball. While the Cardinals and Astros among the worst.

I guess this adds fuel to my hankering suspicion that that the Cards are going to come roaring back up the standings at some point... and that the Pirates may go tumbling down.

Curious as to how much of that was Votto?

A whole bunch of it. Votto was at 1.51. Ludwick was at 1.15. No one else over 0.54 (hitters). Homer Bailey leads the pitchers at 0.70 and is followed by Arroyo at 0.44. No other pitcher was above 0.26. Chapman is actually dead last at -0.91, but that is to be expected from a closer. When he gives up runs, they are incredibly important ones with a lot of value since there is less time to make them up.

Not gonna happen. Pirates are for real. As we wait for them to fail, they just keep winning. Time to realize they are going to be there all season.

We'll see. I won't be surprised if you are right. I've just got this hunch.

And yet the Pirates have the worst OBP of any team in the NL (before yesterday's games). At some point you gotta think that is going to catch up with them.

That's what they said last year too.
