According to John Fay, at least. Plan is Arizona League Tuesday and Wednesday, if all goes according to Hoyle this weekend.

Hope everything goes well. He could be huge down the stretch with that fresh arm.

I hope so too. So far everytime he gets started he re-injures something.

Chapman 1.61 13 84 0.118 0.69
Cueto 2.28 31 94 0.247 1.16
Arredondo 2.33 23 44 0.200 1.32
Marshall 2.83 8 44 0.281 1.40
Ondrusek 2.86 19 25 0.218 1.33
LeCure 3.48 15 34 0.242 1.34

If anybody is silly enough to think that Ondrusek's ERA is an accurate representation of his skill, they can have him.

Arredondo is also an adventure on the mound. So it LeCure. Bray is oft-injured but probably unmoveable until at least the winter. Same with Masset.

With both Donnie Joseph and JJ Hoover waiting in the wings, I'd love to see the Reds send some relievers elsewhere for a better CF or a really good prospect. Pitching is at a premium and the Reds finally have some. Put it to good use, IMO.

What is Hoyle?

according to Hoyle
according to the rules; in keeping with the way something is normally done. (Alludes to the rules for playing games. Edmond Hoyle wrote a widely used book with rules for card games. This expression is usually used for something other than games.) That's wrong. According to Hoyle, this is the way to do it.

I like our current bullpen. Minus Bray. He scares me. If Nick gets back please do not let him pitch for the first time with the bases loaded and the game on the line. Ease him back.

If it's the 2009 Masset, he can pitch in any spot any time. Even on the first day. He was terrific.

If it's the 2010 Masset, he can pitch in any spot during a good streak. Need to be more cautious in a bad streak. Up and down season, overall good numbers although high walk rate.

If it's the 2011 Masset, I hope he takes his time getting ready because it was, well, an off-year for him. 1.5 plus WHIP. Four walks per nine. 9.7 hits per nine.

I agree the Reds have a good bullpen but I'd take the view that it would be an area of concern without Chapman and his amazing performance. Will Masset help? Depends on which Masset we get.

I think the "real" Nick Masset is the 2010 version, maybe slightly worse.

If that's what we're getting, I'd replace Ondrusek with Masset.

Agreed.

If Ondrusek, LeCure, Bray or Masset can bring back value in a trade at this point, sayonara.

I kinda like Arredondo.

Last night, in relief for Louisville, Masset didn't record an out. Gave up 4 hits, 2 walks, 0 K's, and 3 earned runs.

Yikes.

By comparison, JJ Hoover pitched the final inning, gave up 1 hit, and struck out 3.

Sure seems like Masset and Bray have some underlying arm issues. They've been ridden hard by Dusty in the past, especially Masset.

Masset has thrown a few innings in the past but Bray has basically been used as a loogy. His usage has not been overwhelming.

Bray was also battling injuries long before Dusty. Remember the 07 season where we were waiting on Everyday Eddie and Bray to come off the DL and somehow save us? :barf:

Nick Masset is here to have another MRI, he doesn’t have results back yet. That is not good news. #reds

Masset, at this point, is likely a sunk cost. Might be problematic in Chapman becoming a starter next season, though, as his salary will still have to be paid but he won't probably be able to give the team any value.

I wouldn't be taking any chances pitching Masset this year. Let him recover over the offseason and maybe he can come back. A healthy Masset next year I think would be better than Ondrusek/Arredondo. Better than Bray too, but Bray may get a longer leash because he's LH.

I see Masset and Bray gone after the season.

I'm hoping Madson can come back solid and work something out with the Reds.

Pretty sure Masset is under contract for 2013.

Yep. According to Cot's he's set to make $3.1M.

This is what I have worried about all along.
This is not a bash the Reds medical staff comment.. but logically.. Masset was at something like 80% when he started this rehab assignment.
I just really question why they even had him throwing in the minors this year. Why not just go ahead and do the surgery or let him rest the entire season (it seemed like he went from 40% to 80% with just rest).

It just seemed like a longshot that Masset would be healthy enough to be more than a mop up man this season..

This seems to have played out many times.. Let the guy pitch in the minors, and it ends up being for naught..

Masset is signed through next year too.. Now he might be lost for 2013.
Even though Bray is only signed for this year, why did they push him if he's obviously not healthy?

And yes, I said this back when Masset started rehab.. why even bother? Why not let him rest and get 100%.. so this isn't second guessing.

Reds are well positioned to replace Masset, this year and next.

This year, JJ Hoover looks very good as a bat missing right hander. He has fly ball tendencies, but I've been very impressed since his return.

And keep in mind that Broxton missed much of 2011 and had surgery late in the season. By 2013, he may be more able to miss bats than currently. Notice that the Reds use him sparingly, my guess is to avoid further injury or ineffectiveness in light of the surgery.

This combo hopefully will shore up the righty bullpen, along with Arredondo.
