A great man who was part of one of the greatest moments in baseball history in the '46 World Series. Boston fans revere him and rightly so.

Truly grateful he and Bobby Doerr made it to Fenway's 100th.

Truly grateful he and Bobby Doerr made it to Fenway's 100th.

And that they both lived to see the Red Sox win a couple of World Series.
R.I.P.

I'm sorry to hear this news. He seemed like a really good man. I'm glad he saw the Sox win a world series. There can't be too many left who played in the 40's and who served in WWII.

Was around him a couple times in the 90s -- he was just great with the fans, and always in uniform. A baseball player his whole long life.

He was a great guy. I remember him managing bad Red Sox teams in the early 1960s. He had to put up with Dick Stuart's attitude, but it was rumored it was Carl Yastrzemski who got him fired.

After a stint as a coach with the Pirates, he came back to the Sox for a long, long time.

Great book about him, Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, and Bobby Doerr by David Halberstam, called The Teammates (http://www.amazon.com/The-Teammates-ebook/dp/B000FBF7TS). Highly recommended.

I went in search of a list of living MLB WWII veterans and this is what I found. According to this list 144 are still living which includes Pesky. So it's 143 now. That's not many out of over 500 at one time. I don't know when this list was last updated either. So it may be less than the 143.
