About when do the Reds try and resign him?He has a mutual option for next year.I'm sure he'll agree to it,cause he has been reborn with the Reds, can rake at GABP.And I remember him saying that the clubhouse chemistry was the best of any team he has been with.Thoughts?

No!!!! They have the option and that's enough!

The Reds possibly could pick-up his option but signing him to 2-3 years would be a mistake.

Let's see if he can be an asset to us again next year, then we will talk.

Yes, I agree anything beyond next year is not in the Reds best interest at this point.

Couldn't he opt out of the contract and sign somewhere else for more money if he wanted? I'd say give him 2-3 years. He seems to be just what the doctor ordered in left field

It's a team option the Reds have all the control.

Ludwick wants to be here, I'm sure he will exercise his part of the 2013 mutual option.

Per Cot's it is a mutual option. Maybe Cot's has it wrong.

Ryan Ludwick of
1 year/$2.5M (2012 1year/$2.5M (2012)
signed by Cincinnati as a free agent 1/17/12
12:$2M, 13:$5M mutual option ($0.5M buyout)
performance bonuses: $50,000 for 250, 300, 350 plate appearances. $0.1M for 400, 450 PA. $0.15M for 500 PA.

Cot's is right unless Fay and MLB both reported it wrong.

To somebody who knows more than me, what is the point of a mutual option? The only thing I can think of is that the player gets locked into a certain amount of money if the option is exercised.

I think Ludwick would stat here if he had the option to or not. He is having a comeback year with us and his HR totals are better this year in our ballpark.

Ludwick will likely walk away from the contract with hopes of getting a 3 year deal. I agree that it is a mistake to give it to him but some team out there will.

If he goes, then who do you put in LF? Heisey? Frazier? Paul?

Early June thread: This Ludwick guy is a joke. Dang it Dusty you make horrible decisions.

Mid-August thread: Should we re-sign Luwick?

My how two months can make a difference.

Go Reds!

May: Joey Votto already getting MVP considerations, Jay Bruce is National League Player of the Month (12 HR and 33 RBIs) Reds are 4 games back in NL Central

mid August: Votto injured for 4 weeks and likely another week, Bruce is benched for 2 games, 1 HR and batting .206 for the month. Reds are 5 games up in NL Central

What an odd but amazing result 3 months can bring. :beerme:

That was actually 15 months ago, in 2011, that Bruce was the player of the month for May. This year in may he had a rather ho-hum .229/.296/.469 batting line in May.

Doesn't change the truth of your point, though. Baseball is a funny game. :beerme:

Ah. My bad, I just looked it up more extensively and found he was player of the week back in April.

Good news is, we can optimistically (thought maybe not realistically) still hope for another May-2011-like month to close the year since he hasn't gone too crazy yet this season. :p

I think that is what Dusty believes too. It seems that he stays with guys that are slumping for a long time in the hopes that they get hot sometime. Honestly, it has worked too. I have seen countless forums and fans calling for Rolen, Stubbs, Ludwick, and Bruce to be benched/cut/traded. But sometimes it does not work too. I do not see Cairo getting out of his slump and Dusty stuck with Cordero too long.

Let's hope that Ludwick stays at his current level. He is carrying this team since Votto went down.

Plenty of time to address that but I like Frazier in LF, when we acquire Headley.

Ludwick is such a nice guy, it's a great story but any longer than this year and next I would think it's be time to move on, by then Ludwick would be 36-37.

I'd be perfectly happy with Frazier in LF and Headley at 3B. That still gives us two offensive studs.

Unless he is crazy he will opt out of the mutual option

He is on pace for 30 HR and 88 RBI as a part time player

He will make a lot more that 5M next season and that is what the mutual option is for

Wrong it is a mutual option not a team option, he can opt out

Sign him for next year to begin the season. Then, about May-June, it becomes apparent that this kid named Hamilton, replaces him in the line-up ala Votto taking 1st base from Hatteberg.

Yeah, I've been wrong before. But at its price, I'd say his option is as good as picked up. And with his comments about the clubhouse, I'm guessing he'd want to stay too.

He deserves it.

Ludwick's last 70 games heading into today .300/.362/.642/1.004 with a 45-25 team record. Over that run he has 20 HR, 41 XBH and 54 RBI.

He's not hitting a lot of GABP specials either, he's destroying the ball. Why any pitcher would give him a first pitch fastball anywhere near the strikezone is beyond me lol.

Buh bye Ludwick. Thanks for the nice year.

But, from MLBTR...

•The Red Sox are very interested in pursuing a new deal with Cody Ross, who will be coming off of a one-year, $3MM pact this winter. With many teams in need of a righthanded bat, he could likely net a Josh Willingham-type three-year, $21MM deal

If Ross is getting that Ludwick will probably by offered around 30 million over 3 years. No way Reds come close.
