Phillips, even with 2 hits last night, is 4 for his last 29.

It was a little silly not to rest him one of the games yesterday or today IMO

Cubs announcers just killing BP for being lazy all series and not playing the game. They said they should tell him to play the game and send him a dvd of the game after so he can sit and watch his hits.

I think this perception is somewhat of a thought outside of Cincy where most fans think the world of him.

Maybe they are trying to counter Chris Welsh blasting Soriano every possible chance.

BP swings at strike 3 that bounced on the plate and the catcher just took 5.1 seconds to get the ball to first after it kicked away....but pouty BP doesn't even get 1/2 way to first in that time...even though he typically gets there in 4.1 when sniffing out a hit on a weak grounder.

The slow trot on the foul tip is a indicator he is lacking motivation/tired. BP needs a day.

"pouty", that's a new one. Personally I don't care if guys don't "hustle" 24/7 162 games a year, as long as they hit 280-290, play golden glove defense, step it up big time when the mvp goes down, and bat wherever the manager tells them to.

Valdez letting the Cubs back in the game

Ironman92
08-19-2012, 02:55 PM
Take a deep breath and count to 10.. Go!

It was completely routine...completely. He moved 2 steps to his right, made the play and they tell me I am spoiled by watching?????? That play gets made by every 2nd baseman in any level of professional baseball...and if not it's an error 100 times out of 100....then in typical pouting fashion he doesn't even attempt to run to first after fanning on the worst pitch he has swung at all season.

Yes...pouty, he put his head down after being embarrassed by his swing and never at any point hustled....not like he sulked for a second and then realized the ball got away and took off to first...he pouted for 8 steps to first.

Of course all the things you mentioned are the big picture but the 24/7 stuff is silly....he does that every time he's unhappy with his swing UNLESS it's to beat out a bang bang DP potential play or to beat out a hit to 3rd on a crapper swinging bunt.

Great player....helping the Reds win greatly.

Go back and time it...from missed swing to the time the catcher retrieved it and it touched the first baseman's mitt was 5.1 seconds. Phillips takes 4.1 to first full go. Hamilton gets to 1st in 3.64.

I was done with this but if you post stupid stuff like that I will not let it go.

Don't be ridiculous. Hes a .250 hitter with too big a swing and too many moving parts. But defensively, hes got a terrific arm, good speed, great range, good instincts, hits the cut off man and he's fearless. That's why his occasional bobbles are so infuriating.

17-4 in games decided by 1 or 2 runs

Agreed.

How do you compare him and O'Neill?

O'Neill? Possibly very very comparably as I truly believe Bruce could break out in another organization. Bruce has done a good bit more by his age....but the main difference IMO is the fire that O'Neill played with....Bruce has that talent and maybe beyond....but O'Neill's fire is an important part to a championship team IMO....Votto, Cueto and Latos have it.

O'Neill was the .278 guy who left and the next year hit .358? And won a batting title....very unpredictable IMO.

And when you say Paul O'Neill I immediately think of the most underplayed amazing highlight of all-time.

Tying run on 2nd....1 out...9th inning. A single on the ground right to O'Neill and he charges hard, scoops up the ball, drops it, scoops it again, bobbles it, drops it and as it bounces off the Riverfront turf he kicks it in the air all the way to the cutoff in the IF....but the timing was immaculate...the 3rd base coach saw the charge, glanced to see where his runner was and he missed the bobble/drops but saw the ball in the air headed towards the cutoff and he holds the runner! Lol O'Neill knew too many bobbles cost him the play so he just gets ticked and kicks it....3rd base coach had no idea the ball in the air was kicked and had nothing on it.

Why that isn't on every highlight/blooper show is beyond me.....nothing similar has ever happened.

40YrRedsFan

I was asking for people to compare Bruce and O'Neill defensively. I said Bruce should be a great right fielder except for the fact that he has these huge mental lapses like he had today. This guy says i don't know what I'm talking about.

Now I assume we all agree that O'Neill was a "great" right fielder . But I think Bruce is just as good except for the occasional boo boos. Also O'Neill stepped up his game when the money was on the line- see 1990 playoffs. Any disagreements?
