I am watching the Phillies feed, so maybe it's different.

Anyway, Berry was yelling to Phillips to stop while he was standing right next to Heisey and he was going in to score. Heisey thought he told him to stop. Heisey cam to a complete halt, and it actually looks like Berry pushed him towards home saying "not you!"

I would be embarrassed as a pro to have a team play me in a way that says, "your abilities are so limited and predictable that we're just going to concede the entire left side of the infield to you." At least throw a bunt down the third base line every now and then.

texasdave
08-20-2012, 09:10 PM
Originally called the "Boudreau" or "Williams" shift, the strategy is often associated with Ted Williams, but it was actually first employed against Cy Williams during the 1920s.[1][2] It was later used against Ted Williams during the 1946 World Series between the Red Sox and the Cardinals as a defensive gimmick by St. Louis manager Eddie Dyer to psych out and hopefully contain Boston slugger Williams. It was devised by Cleveland Indians manager Lou Boudreau on a blackboard between games of a doubleheader in July 1946 to halt Williams' hot hitting. "I always considered The Boudreau Shift a psychological, rather than a tactical victory," wrote Lou Boudreau in his book, Player-Manager. The shift has been employed since then to thwart extreme pull hitters (mostly lefties), such as Barry Bonds, Ryan Howard, Jason Giambi, or David Ortiz.

Yep. Homer is done and Leake is Leake. Arroyo has the veteran creaminess and the ability to step up in big games, having been there before. He's not the ideal #3 starter on a playoff team, should we end up being one, but he's obviously a much better choice than the alternatives.

Leake is to pitching as to Stubbs to positional players...only good for Reds as they are cheap options..as they get older and arbitration...I'd let them walk once they get up to 1Mil bucks or more a season.

Hopefully Corcino and Cingrani will be ready to roll in 1-2 years to take over for Arroyo and Leake...maybe Bailey.

BluegrassRedleg
08-20-2012, 09:58 PM
Yep. Homer is done and Leake is Leake. Arroyo has the veteran creaminess and the ability to step up in big games, having been there before. He's not the ideal #3 starter on a playoff team, should we end up being one, but he's obviously a much better choice than the alternatives.

I like Bailey's stuff a lot more than Arroyo's, but I trust Bronson about 3x more than I do Homer.

I've always liked LeCure as the long man. He's ideal for that role...starters mentality, good control, crafty, etc....not the stuff for the rotation, but good enough. Ondrusek is a hot mess. Arredondo is scaring the bejesus out of me lately. We need Hoover back up here, Masset to get healthy and Broxton to stop stinking.

Tonight is a loss; they happen in baseball. But I just feel like we left food on the table tonight. We got to the ace of a team who just happens to own us, and we're still going to lose. Very frustrating.

Random thought. If they let the runner get to second on fielder's indifference, or whatever they call it, and he scores on a single, the run should be unearned. Why should the pitcher be penalized for that?

19.2 if I added it right. Someone said earlier that this is a bad time to be hitting the Phillies and I agree. Cliff Lee is pitching tomorrow and he really doesn't have that bad of numbers as you would think being 2-7. He has a .383 ERA and just came off a 12K effort. He doesn't walk anyone, but that doesn't matter because the Reds don't walk anyway.

I think the Phillies are a good team. Fortunately for the Reds, if they have a bad series they can put it in the rear view because of how well they have done so far. It's probably important not to put too much weight on this series, but their are a ton of great match-ups.

Philadelphia is a solid team with very good pitching. The type of team the Reds will face in October. A split would be nice. Seeing them play sound fundamental baseball would be nice as well.

Here is another question I have. If the opposing team lets the runner advance to second base and, let's say the runner falls. Then the catcher gets up and throws him out. Won't he get credited with a caught stealing? Shouldn't they call it a caught indifferentiating? :)

If they were truly indifferent towards the runner, then the catcher wouldn't even bother throwing down there when the runner fell. Maybe that is the true test. Have the runner fall down and judge the reaction. :D
