I wouldn't mind Ondrusek staying down there.

Well it at least establishes the pecking order in some sense.

Holy crap. I'm shocked Ondrusek got optioned.

Holy crap. I'm shocked Ondrusek got optioned.

Why? It's not really that shocking. As I said in the game thread yesterday, Alfredo Simon's usage had nothing to do with being thought of as less than a pitcher, but he was more suited to go longer innings than Ondrusek.

Ondrusek made the most sense. I don't know why this is shocking.

Oh Ondrusek is hot garbage and he should have been the one to go, but I didn't think the Reds would actually do it.

I thought it would be Lecure myself.

You have to go with 24 men during suspension.

They had to add a catcher since Mes is out.

So they will go with 11 pitchers for awhile, since they can only have a 24 man squad.

Logan probably deserved it, but as indicated move was made IMO because of the suspension.

Edited in light of earlier posts.

Considering the first post of the thread mentioned it's because of the suspension, you went out on a limb there :)

2 game suspension for Mes.

Ondrusek can't return for 10 days unless there's an injury. So I wonder what the move will be in a couple of days when Mesoraco returns.

Masset, perhaps?

Logan's 10 days will be up on August 31 meaning he will still be playoff elegible should they decide to go that route.

Me personally? I don't want him anywhere near the playoff roster.

While I missed the initial post, my error, the calculus is (I think) as follows:

Reds can't replace Mes, need to go with 24 men. Rather than have no backup catcher they had to bring up Navarro. But still can only have 24.

So they moved a pitcher, Logan, who I believe pitched 2 innings yesterday and has been ineffective.

Unless I'm wrong, I agree with Brutus that Logan is now down for 10 days.

So we'll see Hoover or Masset or Bray back when the suspension is over.

Logan's 10-day stay ends on 8/31. Will be interesting to see if he returns then or after rosters expand in September.

The only exception to Logan having to stay down for 10 days would be if a player went on the DL he could come up earlier to take that spot but otherwise he would be down for 10 days. I have not heard much about Masset recently. I would think he has to be getting close if he is going to come back this year at all.

Frankly, even if Logan got some kind of special exception due to the suspension, I'm not sure Reds would bring him back early anyway. He's really had trouble of late.

Righty pitching tomorrow, guessing Navarro starts that game for Reds.

He's been on rehab assignment for just over three weeks now. By rule, he has up to 30 days to rehab, meaning he'd have to be activated by the first of September.

But I believe the Reds had said he was getting close to being ready.

Edit: corrected an error on my part

He hasn't thrown on back-to-back days yet, and that always seems to be the last step for rehabbing relievers. Last threw on August 18th, so maybe they plan on him throwing today and tomorrow or back-to-back days this week yet.

I thought I recalled seeing a date the Reds had scheduled for those back-to-back appearances, but I can't seem to find it. After further reading, it seems they're still a week or two away from being ready to activate him, so my guess is that Hoover will get the call. That would actually make more sense because it would ensure more flexibility for the playoff roster as Masset would still be on the DL but eligible for the playoffs if he pitches well in September.

The minor league regular season actually ends on Labor Day so other than minor league teams in the playoffs he would have a little less than 2 weeks left at most he could keep pitching in Louisville.

I'm hoping a stint in AAA gets his head clear and he starts pitching the way he can and he comes back to help the team win the division when the rosters expand.

My guess is Navarro doesn't start either game with Hannigan getting both Homer and Bronson.

I actually misspoke anyhow. It's actually a 30-day limit for pitchers. So he'd have to be activated in the next week.

Guessing Navarro plays tomorrow. Avoids using Hanigan four in a row. Righty pitcher for Phils, Navarro switch hitter can hit lefty.

Not advocating, just a guess.

Any chance Mes goes down to AAA for a few days after the suspension to try and get his stroke going with some consistent PAs?

Navarro will not catch Arroyo unless Hanigan is injured.

Have you seen Navarro? The guy is a butcher behind the plate.

After the acquisition of Broxton, a butcher might come in handy. :ughmamoru:
