Pete Kozma triples to start the 4th after Dave Sappelt can't cut off the ball on the hop in RFC, he should have cut it off but the grass is wet. The Cardinals then try a squeeze play that goes wrong but the catcher drops a high pitch on a missed bunt to allow the run to score and Kozma gets a steal of home.

Castro singles to start the 8th and then Valbuena ropes a missile right to Craig with the runner going for a double play. Dave said he was tired of hearing about the Cardinals luck, if so then he better not be watching because even the Cardinals announcers are talking about them getting lucky and all the breaks falling their way.

Dave Sappelt appeared to beat out an infield single but the umpire said he missed the bag, replay looked like he got it. Campana gets blown away and then DeJesus picks up a single to keep the game alive, and Barney takes Salas deep to tie it up 4-4.

If the Cubs win this then it will be the 4th of 5 wins at Wrigley coming on walk-offs against the Cardinals this year for the Cubs. The Cards came into this game with a spent pen and Carpenter only went 5 so the Cubs have a good shot if they prolong the game.

It was no doubt a great play to get it by Barney but Rizzo saved the day keeping the throw from rattling around or going into the dugout.

The Cardinals have 1-2-3 up against Alberto Cabrera and Cubs will have 7-8-9 so this inning could be big for the fate of the wild card race.

DeJesus makes up for his misplay earlier with a big 4th hit to walk-off the Cardinals for the 4th time at Wrigley. Sweet they didn't have Motte thanks to their manager running him into the ground and had to use Fernando Salas who ends up blowing it in the 9th.

Now the pressure is on everyone else to make it hurt, because they aren't going to get many more shots like this.

How are the Brewhas doing this??? That's an amazing story.

Their BP stopped blowing every third game, even with their resurgence they have a 60% save percentage that's tied with the Cubs and only in front of Houston and Colorado's 58%. Their 27 blown saves are a MLB high by 4 and even with that massive number inflating it the MLB average is 17 and they have been out of this world as of late to make it that "good"

Last year Axford only lost 2 games and converted 46/48, in 4 less games this year he has 7 losses and converted 32/40 and his ERA jumped from 1.95 to 4.68. To show how far Axford has came to get those numbers in his last 17 games he is 1-0 with a hold and 14 of 14 save conversions the last 30 days.

Carlos Marmol blows that dude has put the Cardinals in the playoff two years in a row!

Last year was the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen when he said he wonders how the Cardinals feel blowing their season losing to the Cubs only for him to come out the next day and give up 2 in the 9th to cost the Cubs 2-1 on a walk-off WP to jump start winning 4 of 5 to make the playoffs.

Now today if he converts it keeps the Brewers in it and saves the Phillies who are down 7-1 and has a chance to save the Dodgers if we clinch, but he blew it in the 9th and the Cubs lost in the 10th to basically ending all realist hopes with 10 games left.

Houston may be the worst team I've ever seen play, they have made at least 10 terrible basic fundamental mistakes tonight and its only in the 7th. Not sure how the Phillies lost 3 of 4 to those dudes.

The Cards are feasting on these bad teams about to go 6-1 in the first 7 of 9 vs the majors two worst teams in crunch time opening up a soon to be 3.5 lead baring a major comeback. If they hold on they will have won 9 in a row against Houston to save their season, too bad they didn't go to the AL a year earlier.

Its amazing you can butcher a read as bad as Jay did on that ball and get lucky not to play into into a inside the park HR and then get credit as a great catch, that was almost as bad as Jim Edmonds slowing down to dive for balls he didn't need too.

The Cardinals do what the Cardinals do yet again as Furcal got hurt and they bring up Kozma with a career minor league line of .236/.308/.344/.652 in 671 games but once he get to the majors he takes off for .298/.358/.596/.954 and carries them with their back against the wall.

Atlanta locks up their playoff spot on a 2-run Walk-off HR by Freddie Freeman to keep the Braves streak of winning Kris Medlen starts alive. The Cardinals win their 10th in a against Houston to move one step closer to locking up the whole NL early, they are going to miss those guys when they move to the AL and I bet the A's and Angels wish they got to see them this year as both of them would likely be locked in as the WC winners.

Cardinals now 7-1 in that massive scheduling break of getting Houston, Chicago and Houston for 9 games in a row while Brewers and Dodgers got stuck with contending teams.

In the AL the White Sox lost yet again and the Tigers won to tie things up in the weak AL Central. The Tigers are in the divers seat in easier games but do have more road games with their final 8 games of the year seeing 5 with the Royals and 3 with the Twins but will have the final 6 on the road. The White Sox have 4 with the Jays and 4 with the Indians with 5 of the 8 at home.

Baltimore already lost, the Yankees are losing to keep the O's to keep the Division hopes somewhat alive. The A's are tied with Texas and the Rays already won with the Angels up 2-0 all pulling for the Rangers.

Fun facts: there could be five games on Thursday, and the regular season could still be going on Saturday:

If Tampa Bay, Boston, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City, Texas, Los Angeles Angels, Atlanta, Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Dodgers were all to sweep, and Cincinnati wins 2 out of 3...

AL East: Baltimore / New York tie. (70 L)
AL Central: Detroit / Chicago tie. (76 L)
AL West: Texas (66 L)
AL Wildcard 1: Baltimore / New York loser.
AL Wildcard 2: Tampa Bay / Oakland / Los Angeles tie. (71 L)

NL East: Washington / Atlanta tie (66 L)
NL Central: Cincinnati (64 L)
NL West: San Francisco (69 L)
NL Wildcard 1: Washington / Atlanta loser
NL Wildcard 2: Los Angeles / St Louis tie (75 L)

AL East, AL Central, AL Wildcard Play-in #1, NL East and NL Wildcard Play-in all take place on Thursday.

AL Wildcard Play-in #2, NL Wildcard Game take place on Friday.

AL Wildcard Game takes place on Saturday.

(Some of the scheduling is speculation..)

Mota was off if he holds and everything plays out its 4-4 with a runner at 3rd for Kemp with 1 out looking to win and have their Ace going tomorrow with the Cards facing one of the best road pitchers in the game.

Some teams get amazing luck and St Louis is one of those teams, won the WS with 2 of the 3 worst records in WC era and now get in yet again thanks to the new WC rules. The Braves become the team screwed by it twice. If they had it last year they get in and had a shot now they have to face the Cardinals despite being 6 games better in a one and done situation.

MLB needs a balanced schedule getting the Royals for 6 Interleague play and the Dodgers getting the Angels for 6 is the difference in the season right now. That's not even factoring in the Dodgers got 12 games with Houston/Cubs going 8-4 and all 6 games with Houston was when they still were right around .500, while Cardinals went 21-11 vs the two worst teams in baseball and Cards got most all of the Houston games after they went into tank mode.

5. Freddie Freeman, 1B
6. Dan Uggla, 2B

9. Kris Medlen, P

Not starting Brian McCann is about dumb as it gets no matter how bad he's been. He still has 20 HR and is a 6 time All-Star with previous playoff success. This is yet another move in the trend of managers and other teams absolutely losing their minds when they face the Cardinals.

He's not playoff hurt, and was 2-for-2 yesterday so if they started him in a meaningless 162 then he wasn't too bad off. Its unbelievably stupid to sit a 6 time All-Stars over a 20 AB sample size where he is one hit shy of hitting .300 vs the pitcher and Medlen has spent 92.2 innings with McCann vs just 44.1 with Ross so its not like he's his personal catcher.

Medlen has already said he really likes the way Ross manages games. Also Ross has thrown 44% of guys out this season, McCann only 24% and he's dealing with a shoulder issue, one he already said will require surgery in the offseason. And you know St Louis is aggressive on the base paths. In a 1 game playoff where 1 run could be the difference between advancing or going home a lot more stacks up in Ross' favor than you are willing to admit.

Of course by your logic offense is the only thing important for a catcher when it's actually defense and the guy who calls the best games that is way more important especially when the playoffs roll around.

HometownHero
10-05-2012, 02:35 AM
You have a sample size flaw in those SB attempts. You're talking about sacrificing a guy who can win a game any time he steps in the box vs maybe saving 1 SB attempt at best since nobody tries to steal off Medlen with 14 attempts in his career.

The Braves have the lowest OPS in the playoffs, and even a bad Brian McCann has a shot to do major damage and change a game instantly with 20 HR in 439 and has a unbelievably unlucky .234 BABIP.

Medlen has had issues with winning teams in his career when not dominating bad teams, the Cardinals were 5th in the majors at 4.72 RPG and don't play in a hitters park, that RPG is 3rd overall and #1 in the NL among playoff teams.

The Braves will need to score to win this game.
