I hope we get to play the Giants with home field adantage in the NLDS. I undestand that if that happened we wouldn't likely have home field advantage in the NLCS, but I think it is worth it. I really don't want to play the Cards or Dodgers.

The Dodgers got a massive comeback win tonight will be interesting if they can build off it and the have tons and tons of hard games the rest of the way. It will also be interesting to see if the Pirates can get their heads out of their anus' and start beating bad teams and how teams on the upswing like the Mets and Brewers handle going into St Louis were they tend to get rolled recently.

The Dodgers and the Braves had huge comebacks with walk-off wins.

Took the Cardinals 2 hitters to get a lead once they came back home where teams just fall apart when they play there other than the Pirates who fall apart everywhere else as they are down 5-0 to Houston at home half way home. Braves all over the Rockies by 6 in the 6th and the Brewers got hit with the reality check once they had to hit the road again down 6-2 in 4th.

The Cardinals are back home and look like they will run away with the WC, they are on their way up 4-0 in the 5th of winning 24 of 32 .750 at home with 5 of the 8 losses coming to the Giants, Dodgers and Pirates 6-5 vs those 3 teams and don't have much left standing in their way at home the rest of the way with the Nats and us resting guys the final 6 days.

It takes an act of god for them to give up a hit with RISP that actually scores a run the last month at home, their whole team splits are wild looking.

Did you guys see the massive break the Cardinals got up one in the 9th?

Torres hits a double down the line off Motte to start the 9th in a 5-4, they appeal and the umpire rings him up for missing 1st despite all 3 replays not showing he missed and if anything his heel is catches the bag. Mets go 0-for-6 with RISP and lose 5-4, its flat out amazing how few hits they give up with RISP at home despite tons and tons of guys on.

I would love to play the Dodgers they are terrible have a losing record for about 100 game period, and are trying to lose again tonight. With the schedule they have left should be plenty more losses to go with those.

The Giants are dangerous getting some guys back healthy and Tim Lincecum truing the corner. Its amazing they are 10-18 in his starts and aren't that far off having the leagues best record.

I loved how the ump enthusiastically punched him out.

In reality, I think the video looks like he touched, but the ump was right on top of it and thought otherwise. One point being made was, if he felt he really touched, why didn't he react more than what he did? I'll say it again though, i thought he touched.

They are trending, no, spiraling downward though. They had a commanding lead in the WC and are now on the outside looking in. I agree anything can happen but the Pirates might be very close to pushing the panic button. Let's say they limp into the post season, that's the team you want to play. Not the Cards.

The Cards limped into the playoffs last year....

Remember, the Reds last 6 games are against Pirates then Cards. That could decide who gets in as long as they are within 2 games of each other.

I loved how the ump enthusiastically punched him out.

The funny thing he isn't even a real everyday MLB umpire, he was a vacation ump filling in. He was in a good position but its hard to make that call if every single replay on both the home and road broadcast come up inconclusive leaning towards touching.

McCutchen with a RBI double in the first to give them a 1-0 lead.

Cardinals get on the board in the classic Cardinals from with a infield hit for Molina, a throw the bat out there roller into right and a passed ball to advance the runners and then a RBI single into left by Schumaker.

Descalso makes it 2-0 on the 4th hit in a row to start the 2nd, the ball takes a wild spinning hop and allows the runner to go to 3rd. Garcia bunts the runner to second and runner holds at 3rd. Jay gets on by a HBP that grazes him and Matt Carpenter makes it 3-0 with a SF before Holliday flied out to center. The two outs other than the bunt were the hardest hit balls of the inning.

Getting the slumping Furcal and Beltran out of their order is making the offense look a lot better after those two carried it to start the year. Cardinals heading for winning 25 of 33 at home if Garcia who is lights out at home doesn't blow it.

09-04-2012, 10:38 PM
This is one the craziest stats I've ever seen but the Cardinals over their last 12 home games including today are holding teams to 7-for-78 .090 with RISP and 3 of those came in the 19 inning game.

7 of the 11 games had zero hits with RSIP and two more had one and the remaining other had 2 but in 12 chances. Mets are 0-for-3 today with RISP with 2 K's looking to end the last half inning.

Pittsburgh now up 3-0 McCutchen gets his second RBI of the game and Jones adds his first of the game. Elsewhere In the MVP race Bruan is 2-for-4 with a double and 2 more RBI now up to 98.

HometownHero
09-04-2012, 11:09 PM
Daniel Murphy comes up as the tying run but promptly hits into a DP, so now last 12 home games the Cards are holding teams to a .089 BA with RISP. That's just craziness!

Pirates take a 6-0 lead on a dropped pop by Tyler Greene, the Cardinals are up 4-0 and Matt Holliday had to leave with an injury after coming up hurting on his trot to first after a walk.

HometownHero
09-04-2012, 11:58 PM
Matt Holliday leaving the game for the Cardinals may have won the game for them, the fast guy who replaced him made all 3 put outs including running in on a hard sinking liner, and going back a long way making a leaping catch on the track to take a 2-Run double away from Murphy.

There is no shot Holliday makes both of those and may get one depending on positioning but both could been hits if he stayed in with the sore back. Mets now 0-for-7 with RISP in the game and 0-for-13 in the series and Cards are holding teams to 7-for-82 .085 the last dozen home games.

Dodgers went to a guy making his season debut in extras and after a good first inning gets touched up in a major way in his second allowing 3 runs and counting. The Dodgers need a real manager if they are going to spend that much money and Mattingly isn't that guy.

HometownHero
09-05-2012, 03:18 AM
Padres just get those 3 but the Dodgers go quietly in the 11th as Cards have big night gaining a game on the Dodgers on top of picking one up on the Braves for homefield in the WC playoff game. Dodgers will need to sweep the Cardinals in their 4 game series next weekend to have a legit shot with as hard as their remaining schedule is and as easy as the Cards have here on out.

Grandal's game tying 2-Run shot 3 batters after they replaced Kershaw in the 8th was the big blow.

HometownHero
09-05-2012, 03:42 AM
Between now and the end of next weekend we should know the 5 playoff teams.

Cardinals have
1 vs Mets
3 vs Brewers
3 at San Diego
4 at Dodgers

If they have more than a 1 game lead by them is basically over with their next 9 being Houston, Cubs and Houston again before ending the year with Washington and Us going to St Louis both looking to play it safe getting ready for the playoffs.

Dodgers have
1 vs San Diego
3 at San Fransisco
2 at Arizona
4 vs Cardinals

If they are more than a game out by them they are in trouble as after that its 9 game road trip to play Nats, Reds and Padres before heading home to play Rockies and Giants who may still not have things fully warped up themselves.

Pirates have
1 vs Houston
3 vs Cubs
3 at Reds
4 at Cubs

The have to find a way to make up major ground there even with playing us and must win all 4 games at Chicago to cash in and match the 4 losses and wins the Dodgers/Cardinals will pick up playing head to head.

After that its back home for 3 with the Brewers who just took 5 of 6 off them in the past week, then its a 7 game trip with 3 in Houston before 4 in NY before they come home to play the Reds and Braves.

And out on the West Coast, Tony LaRussa was guest manager for the San Francisco Giants last night. He used ELEVEN!! pitchers in an 8-6 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The grass between the Giants' dugout and the pitcher's mound will be re-sod before Wednesday's game.

The Baltimore Orioles are below league average in both hitting and pitching (raw statistics) and sit atop the AL East (tied with New York).
They have given up more runs than they have scored and somehow are 17 games over
.500. They are beating their pythag by 10 games. Good for Baltimore.

For the second time in the Cards/Mets series they called a guy for missing a bag, this time it was more clear as the last out of the game saw Adron Chambers get called out for not retouching 2nd after rounding it on a pop up while running.

R.A. Dickey helped out the WC hunters and our Magic Number by pitching a solid game just allowing 2 runs on a DP and a HR to Wainwright, speaking of Wainwright he pitched his second bad game in a row so maybe he's hitting an innings wall after his TJ surgery.

Mike Matheny's JV line up was nice to see as well with Holliday out with a bad back he also sat Molina, Freese and Craig and went back to the slumping Berkman and Beltran. Now we will see if the Pirates, Braves and Dodgers will make them pay for a rare home loss for a change.

Ryan Braun SOLO jack makes it 5-4 Brewers in the 13th of a rain delayed game. Rare big hit against the Cardinals who he had been 27-for-118 .229 against the last two years prior with owing the rest of baseball for 317-for-951 .333.

Axford gets the first two quickly and then walks Berkman on 4 pitches despite the fact he can hardly swing the bat playing with a major knee injury that is going to end his career at seasons end. But bounces back and gets Descalso to fly out on a 3-2 count to bail the sucking Pirates and Dodgers.

The Cardinals fall to 3-10 in Extra Innings this year and lose yet another one run game, also rare back-to-back losses at home to losing teams.

The Dodgers are 41-51 in their last 92 and 20-21 since adding Hanley Ramirez and Randy Choate and 5-8 since the trade with Boston. The Pirates get 4 hits and commit 7 errors at home against the hapless Cubs to lose again falling to 14-23 over their last 37.

Keep an eye!

That race is trending towards over, the Brewers blew their only real chance today losing to the Cardinals. The Pirates are 2.5 back and are coming to see us next and the Dodgers just dropped another one to slide 1.5 out.

If any of these teams are going to make a run it will be at our expense as we play 15 of 21 with the Wild Card contenders.

If the Cards win or split in LA this week then the race is over if they lose 3 of 4 they should still be the favorite but it will be interesting if they slip up against the bad teams but if they get swept its anybodies race.

Its unbelievably hard to jump 3 teams in the standings and fight off another that you are currently tied with in 20 games, and its virtually impossible when you are trying to do it from 5 games out.

If the Nats are losing to the Dodgers, Cardinals and Brewers that means other WC teams are winning making it even harder for that scenario to happen.

This may be the worst race in baseball history, the Cardinals have gone 15-18 in their last 33 games and are a +3.5 in the standings.

WC Standings on Monday, August 6, 2012
62-46 ---- Pirates
60-49 -2.5 Cardinals
59-51 -4.0 Dodgers

WC Standings on Tuesday, September 11, 2012
75-67 ---- Cardinals
74-68 -1.0 Dodgers
72-69 -2.5 Pirates

Its unbelievably hard to jump 3 teams in the standings and fight off another that you are currently tied with in 20 games, and its virtually impossible when you are trying to do it from 5 games out.

If the Nats are losing to the Dodgers, Cardinals and Brewers that means other WC teams are winning making it even harder for that scenario to happen.

Ok thanks.....didn't know. The can't go 16-4 because of the other teams.

I don't think Philly or Milwaukee can finish it off. If either does I'd lean towards the Brewers. Both have a lot of tough games left so I don't see it happening.

Honestly if the Pirates weren't so wobbly right now I'd pick them because they have a favorable schedule, but I think the Stl/LA series will setup the 2nd wildcard winner.

Don't look now but the Phillies are only 4 games out of the wild card and the next 7 games are against the Astros and Mets.

With the Dodgers and Cardinals playing each other in a 4 game series there is a real good chance they pick up ground.

HometownHero

The only real shot the Phillies have is to win today vs Josh Johnson who they just blew a good run scoring opportunity against and go to Houston and sweep all 4 games while the Dodgers and Cardinals play and hope the Dodgers win 3 games at least then fold against the better comp they play the rest of the way.

Its one thing to get one team to choke its another to get that team to do all while playing better than the other 5 teams within 5 games.

16-4 gets the Phillies in....15-5 maybe

Will take some big time help even at 16-4 as 16 wins only gets them to 87 wins. The Cards get to 87 wins with a 12-8 record and have 2 more home games and a easier remaining schedule .464 to .491.

The main two teams ahead of the Phillies have 4 games H2H meaning one will get 2 wins at least no matter what, then Cardinals have 9 games in a row with Houston, Cubs, Houston before getting 6 games against teams playing it safe in Nats and us.

That 9 game span of getting the 2 worst teams in the majors is their saving grace. Its going to take some historically bad baseball for them to lose 4 or more games there and then they still would need to find a way to lose to two teams just going through the motions waiting for the playoffs to start.

Logan Forsythe just made one of the worst errors I've ever seen in the Cardinals vs Padres game and it should be two but they gave him just one.

Here is what happened Molina hits a slow rolling routine ground ball to second and he boots it, but Molina is slow and he had time still but got excited and threw it into the dugout to give him second.

Philadelphia won 3-1

They use Molina to bunt the PR Chambers over to third but Freese hits a ball right to Headley forcing the runner to hold, Cardinals then answer back with Carlos Beltran off the bench but Gregerson pitches around him for a 4 pitch walk to put the go ahead run on base and they PR Robinson for him.

The Cardinals use another PH this time Skip Schumaker who is 3-for-5 off Gregerson. I dislike the expanded rosters for innings like this, as you would never be able to pull this off with just 25 guys especially after using other players earlier.

Buts its all for nothing as Gregerson gets Skip to ground to first for a SD sweep.

Their saving grace is they are as healthy as they have been all year and a good amount of momentum.....I don't care how many teams are in front of them...if none of them get somewhat hot the Phillies have a far better chance than the numbers say. Cardinals would have to go 12-8??? A bit of a stretch right now. Dodgers going to go 13-7? Meh....Pirates? Will they get to .500?
The Brewers? Maybe, but they're scary too if they get it....healthy.

It's mid Sept....the Phillies are 3 1/2 out as I type with 19 games left. If they stay as hot as they are....they have an excellent chance.

The Rockies rolled off what 20 of 21 a few years back? Yeah...they were just chasing one team.....but it wouldn't have mattered.

My money is on the Cardinals....the Braves still need a handful of wins (remember last year)

Braves
Cardinals
Phillies
Dodgers
Brewers/Pirates
DBacks

My guess how they finish.

The odds are not in their favor because of how hard it is to jump multiple teams. They need the Cardinals, Dodgers, Pirates to all play several games worse and then need teams like the Brewers and D-backs not to play better,

If they win 3 of 4 in Houston they only get one game on a split taking place in LA this weekend and it could be nothing if one team wins the series all while killing off their 4 easiest reaming games an the Cardinals burning off their 4 hardest games.

After this weekend the Cardinals will have one of the easiest schedules left in the game while Philadelphia gets 4 games with the terrible Astos erased off of what's a .494 remaining w% and only have 6 home games left in the final 19 all 6 with playoff teams and coming before they clinch.

I'm going to keep close watch of the Phillies and Brewers...with an eye on the pesky Dbacks.

I understand all the math involved and how passing 3 teams and holding off 2 others is against the odds. (but no way 4%).....I'm all about this.

Teams may win a game or even a series but the Cardinals aren't going to have a losing run in those 9 games against the two worst teams in the majors.

Its up to 5% now but that's what it is, picking up 3 games in 19 games is hard to do when you don't have H2H with anyone of the 5 or 6 teams alive in the race and your 6 home games are teams virtually locked into the playoffs.

Those two hot teams are 1 game over .500 after long hot streaks, streaks follow streaks is the old MLB adage and the Cardinals aren't going to keep losing at this pace and the Phillies and Brewers will stumble again.

Baltimore wins in 14. Fans found the game interesting enough that no woooing or howling was necessary. Seemed like the fans enjoyed the game without it. Go figure. O's now four games ahead of Tampa Bay with 19 left to play. The win puts them 1/2 a game up on the Yankees, who play later on tonight. A couple of amazing facts, if the Baltimore announcers have their facts straight. They reported that the win was the Orioles' 13th consecutive in extra innings. Mattingly has some guts when it comes to throwing unproven rookies into big spots, its been burning him some the last few weeks but works this time as he goes to Paco Rodriguez who they just drafted 3 months ago with his season on the line and he escapes the jam.

HometownHero
09-14-2012, 01:29 AM
Mattingly had previously only used Paco Rodriguez for 1 out in 2 games they got blanked in to start his MLB career.

So tonight in their biggest game of their season he rides him for 2 outs in a jam of a tie game and then sends him back out to face a RH bat who he walks before getting Jay to pop up a bunt and then allows a hit to Matt Carpenter who is becoming their best player right now before pulling the kid for Belisario to face Holliday.

Holliday hits a rope to Kemp in center that he had to jump and catch almost misplaying it. Then Allen Craig hits a seeing eye single bouncing passed a diving 1B and 2B for a 2-1 Cardinals lead.

Don may have realistically ended their season by using a kid they drafted this year and had .2 innings above AA by trying to press a second inning out of him.

The Dodgers may have the worst offense I've ever seen, they scored 5 or more runs just 3 times since they got Gonzalez in 18 games. They have 1 run tonight looking for their 8th game in a row with 3 or less and could be 9th time in 18 games since the trade scoring 2 or less.

HometownHero
09-14-2012, 01:55 AM
2-1 going to the 9th and it could be the second game in a row Adrian Gonzalez gave them the lead in the first and then that's all they ended up getting in 1 run losses, they got shutout the 2 games before that so he's drove in all 3 of their runs the last 35 innings.

HometownHero
09-14-2012, 02:17 AM
Hanley hits one off the end of the bat off the base of the wall for a 2-out double but Victorino pops to left to end the game.

The Dodgers lose it 2-1 for their 3rd straight one run loss with the others begin 3-2 and 1-0, so they are 0-3 they last 3 games despite giving up 6 total runs. They also got shut out the previous game 4-0 if they won all 3 they would be 2 games up rather than 2 outs. If they win all 3 of those games they should have with their talent they would be 2 up rather than 2 games out. Dodgers took the first 4 from the Cardinals this year but have dropped the last 4 H2H killing their playoff hopes, one win in those 4 and its a tie race.

It turned out to be the best night possible for the Cardinals getting a full game on the Dodgers and Phillies and a half game on everyone else chasing them, and now just need to get one win over the next 3 to leave town in first no matter what with 9 games waiting with the Astros and Cubs.

They are leading the WC race and come from our division which had controlled that race until the Pirates fade so they get the pub by default, when they slipped it became the Dodgers and when the Phillies made a little run they even got updates. If it was the Cubs leading the Mets they would be getting the updates, all the other races in our league are over and done and the Braves are 5 up on the second WC spot.

I do think the Cardinals will cause a lot of issues in the playoffs if Carpenter does indeed comeback next week. They are getting all their bad baseball done now and are keeping their lead. Streaks follow streaks in baseball and they are setting up to get on a hot one at the right time with almost all of their best players sucking at the same time.

The Cardinals who couldn't win 1 run games to save their lives are doing to to save their season as 5 of their last 6 six wins have been by one run and are 6-4 in their last 10 after starting our 12-20 in the situation. Why even bother when this happens to your fastest guy

http://nbchardballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/yadier-molina-gif.gif

Even more crazy than that throw is Chris Carpenter is going to start next week for the Cardinals after having so called season ending surgery a couple months back. He has a 90 pitch simulated game on Saturday if he's good after that he's going to go in ration and get 3 starts before the playoffs. If he comes back and gives then 6 Chris Carpenter innings rather than 8 they become very dangerous over night if they get past the one game play in game with the Braves.

In other news the Pirates are getting no hit over the first 4 and are down 4-0 to some guy who doesn't even know how he's in the majors either. James McDonald doesn't even make it 4 full walking the park in the 4th, if they don't come back the Pirates will have won just 2 of his last 10 starts both against the Cardinals the only team Pittsburgh can beat.

Alfonso Soriano all of a sudden has 29 jacks and 97 RBI after not hitting his first until the Cubs 36th game of the season.

Whoa! Barajas just saved Hanrahan a wild pitch there. A walk loads things up. Valbuena to the plate. A gapper and the Cubs win. Hanrahan just walks his third batter of the inning. 7-6. Dave Sappelt to the plate. Sappelt hitting .375 in limited action. Hanrahan doing his best Nuke LaLoosh imitation. Geez. Pitch number 34. And he struck him out. Pirates win for the first time in their last eight games.

The Phillies while hot are still a losing team and they took a series off us because Chapman wasn't right and gave up a 3-Run HR to blow a game and then got shut down.

Even if the Cubs/Astors took a series off the Cardinals over this 9 game run they aren't getting 3 series in a row off them. I said it 2 weeks ago, again last week and will say it one more time today the Cards will have this thing locked up if the left LA alone in first and they did so.

The Pirates have one more with the Cubs who they have lost 5 of 6 to the last 10 days then go home fore a big elimination series with the Brewers. The Phillies have to go to NY to play the Mets and their top 3 SP after losing 3 of 4 in Houston, And last and certainly least the Snakes and Pads hook up in SD after a day off in what looks to set back both teams unless one gets the sweep.

Cool link, seeing the teams in the bracket with the dates less than 3 weeks away get me pumped. Sucks for the Wild Card teams that have better seasons for the other division winners that they get 3 losses to work with while they are in a one and done high pressure game.

The A's have real hard remaining schedule but they could potentially have the AL's 2nd best record if they stay hot. If they win the WC game they will have to face the Rangers who has the ALs best record.

While the AL East survivor gets the White Sox who benefit from a weak division having just a slightly better record than the two 3rd place teams from the other divisions with less harder games played.

Cardinals win 5-4 and beat Houston for the 8th time in a row, they are going to miss seeing them so much when they go to the AL. When these two teams play I feel like Houston tanks because they just can't do anything right since thier good start.

The trend when the Cardinals are at home is next to no team can get hits with RISP and that held true this series with Houston going 5-for-35 .143 in the series with one of the 5 hits not scoring the run. And that lack of giving up run scoring hits with RISP has helped them to a 46-29 home record with 6 to go, they won the WS last year with 45 home wins all year.

Here are the Astros in a nutshell...

7th inning Bases Loaded hit into a DP
8th inning Bases Loaded 2 strikeouts with Altuve and Wallace
9th inning leadoff single then 3 strikeouts in a row with a SB mixed in

Houston was 0-for-5 with a walk with Bases Loaded, not getting the run home 3 times with less than 2 outs.

Philadelphia takes advantage of the rain changing the rotation and blasted Jeremy Hefner

Ryan Howard usually sucks vs LHP but the Mets rookie southpaw Josh Edgin isn't one of them. After winning the game off him yesterday with a 2 out Two-run HR he gets him again in the 9th for a Grand Slam.

Philadelphia had 8 in the first and 7 in the 9th with a single run in the 8th to bust up the Mets 16-1. The Dodgers lost 4-1 to the Nats so the Brewers are now the closest WC challenger at 2.5 games out.

If the Brewers can take 3 of 4 from the Nats I hope we tank the 3 games to them to set them up with 6 at home vs Houston and the Padres to end the year. Worst case scenario is the Cardinals know they are in and set up the rotation how they want for the WC game and playoffs. So I would like to tank the game to Brewers to force the Cardinals to fight to game 160-162 against us with hopefully a shot to tune up for the playoffs as well as knock them out.

Stupid White Sox blew it and lost to the Royals in the 9th....Tigers lost.

3 games seems so much bigger than 2

The White Sox will blow it.

Cubs gift wrap the Cards a run in the first after David DeJesus misplays a liner into a leadoff double and Volstad hit Holliday on a 0-2 pitch leading to Molina RBI single with 2 outs. Volstad needed 37 pitches to escape the first.

Carpenter gives up a hit and hits a batter in the second, it could have been worse but the ump gave him a unreal strike call on a 3-1 count to the pitcher on a ball up and in before getting a liner to center.

I am so sick of hearing about how lucky the Cardinals are. Time to play the "ignore" card.

DeJesus triples into RCF on a ball into the ivy, and Barney brings him in with a single up the middle. Rizzo smokes one right to Jay in center for for the first out and Soriano ties it with a rope one hop double off the LF wall. Carpenter not fooling anyone in the 3rd, we may get a Carpenter blow up since the mound is wet and he complained to umpire after the last half inning.

EDIT:
Carpenter got Castro to pop weak in to right and Valbuena to line to right so 5 of 6 hitters centered him up with hard contact.
