Im not sure if this has been discussed. But i hear the media kind of blowing off the best record in the NL. Talking about us resting players and such we already have it in the bag.

But imo its at least a topic for discussion. Were a game outside the best record in baseball which would give us the game against the wild card winner.

Im not sure which i would rather have at this point. ATL is hot. However SF is dominating a decent division. Im not sure which is worth playing. Or maybe best to stay away from STL even having a chance at knocking us off. I hate Stl.

So what say you.

May sound strange but I do not want to play a west coast team because of the potential of 10pm est. start times.

Just keep the Phillies out of the playoffs.

Id rather face Atlanta but i think St Louis if they make it will win their 1 game playoff against them and I'd rather face the Giants than the Cardinals

Just some numbers thrown together if anyone is interested.

TEAM OPS+ ERA+ TOTAL PYTH WAR B-WAR P-WAR DER UZR/150
MIL 102 99 201 78 48.1 31.6 16.5 .672 -1.6
STL 107 101 208 83 47.0 31.0 16.0 .684 -5.2
ATL 93 113 206 84 44.3 28.0 16.3 .697 8.0
WSN 100 123 223 87 47.7 27.5 20.2 .704 3.7
SFG 106 93 199 79 39.4 26.2 13.2 .693 -.6
CIN 94 124 218 83 45.4 25.8 19.6 .696 1.4
SDP 96 94 190 70 30.6 25.1 5.5 .702 -1.5
ARI 94 109 203 77 42.3 23.4 18.9 .688 3.8
PHI 92 104 196 73 40.6 22.8 17.8 .686 .5
NYM 94 93 187 68 30.5 20.5 10.0 .692 -6.6
PIT 95 97 192 72 31.0 20.2 10.8 .698 -1.1
LAD 88 110 198 75 33.3 18.1 15.2 .701 1.7
COL 91 93 184 64 29.5 17.6 11.9 .658 -4.7
MIA 89 96 185 65 31.8 17.4 14.4 .685 -2.4
CHC 84 91 175 61 20.3 12.8 7.5 .695 .3
HOU 83 86 169 52 16.4 9.3 7.1 .673 -4.3

I then ranked each numerically with regards to batting, pitching and fielding. There were two rankings for each category so I added both to get a cumulative ranking. Then I added the three categories to get a team total of sorts.

TEAM BAT PITCH FIELD TOTAL
WSN 4 1 1 6
CIN 6 1 4 11
ATL 6 4 2 12
ARI 8 3 5 16
MIL 2 7 13 22
LAD 13 6 3 22
SFG 3 11 9 23
STL 1 8 15 24
SDP 5 14 5 24
PIT 9 10 7 26
PHI 11 5 10 26
NYM 9 13 12 34
MIA 14 9 11 34
CHC 15 15 8 38
COL 12 12 16 40
HOU 16 16 14 46

Going by these numbers I think I would rather face Frisco.

One note: Check out the Team WAR TOTAL. Milwaukee ranks first and St. Louis third. Hmm. Is it because they get to play the Astros and the Cubs so often? Curious.

I'd rather play Atlanta, but it really doesn't matter a whole lot. San Francisco's pitching scares me a little, especially the way the Reds are Hitting right now.

Doesn't matter that much IMO. Not that much difference between SF, ATL and StL (or MIL). In fact I might even PREFER the Giants.

I like the Latos vs Gaints matchup in games 1 and 5 if we play Frisco. I also like knowing who we play and traveling a day earlier if we finish 2nd in the NL.

By far the most important thing IMO is to try our best to keep everyone both healthy and sharp (with the right mix of rest and playing time) for the playoffs.

If we are heathy and sharp we can beat anybody. :beerme:

San Francisco. I'd rather have that offense trying to hit our pitchers than a better offense like ATL or STL.

San Fran -- if nothing else, because of Latos' career numbers against them.

Of those two I would want the Giants but I think the Cardinals will beat the Braves in a one and done situation.

Honestly, this last month I have been hoping we get the 2 seed and the Giants get the 3 seed. I really want to play the Giants.

I tend to subscribe to the "careful what you wish for" thinking.

Reds are the most complete team in the NL if they play up to their ability. More focused on us than the opponent.

Post-Strasburg I would agree. If he was still pitching, I would give the edge to the Nationals. Reds would be very close. Whoever got the breaks in that series would win.

However it works out is fine with me with the exception that I don't want to play the Cards. They, absolutely, play their best ball against the Reds.

That begin said, bring it on. But if this team doesn't work itself out of its current hitting woes and if Cueto doesn't return to form it will be tough no matter who the Reds play.

Giants. First two games in SF. Latos is there obvious choice to pitch game one. And the way Homer pitches away from GABP, I'd let him go game two. That would potentially leave Cueto with extra rest pitching at home leading the series 2-0 going against the Giants #3 starter. Anything can happen in get playoffs.

But I think is pretty obvious that the whole postseason depends on how our offense performs. I think it’a neccessary to start Frazier at third and Heisey in CF. Heisey is weaker defensively, but we are going to need all the offense we can get. We can't just sit and pray that Stubbs and Bruce are going to hit one of their hot streaks...but I'm pretty sure it will be Rolen and Stubbs every game.
