I thought I would start a thread to post rumors and news.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/11/olneys-latest-broxton-guthrie-hunter-mariners.html

In today's Insider-only blog post, ESPN's Buster Olney lists some free agents who are trending upward as the market begins to take shape, including J.P. Howell, Jonathan Broxton, Cody Ross, Jeremy Guthrie, Joe Saunders, Ryan Ludwick, Jason Grilli, Sean Burnett, and Jeff Keppinger. Here are the rest of Olney's rumors...

There has been substantial interest in Broxton so far, and it appears he could receive one of the largest contracts of the relief market.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter) notes that the Reds are looking into two relievers coming off of Tommy John surgery in Joakim Soria and Ryan Madson. Soria will be out until May while Madson should be set to open the season.

Free agent Shane Victorino is on the radar for the Reds and Indians, tweets ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. The Rangers and Red Sox are also among the clubs looking into Victorino as they look to improve their outfield situation.

Victorino update, 8 to 11 teams have interest. Same radar comment which Matt posted.

Victorino, who recently agreed to be represented by agent John Boggs, seeks a contract of more than two years and will consider playing any of the three outfield positions.

The Reds and Indians appear to have Victorino on their radar.

An evaluation of the free agency of Ryan Ludwick
http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/mlb-rumors/20977373/free-agent-preview-ryan-ludwick

Carl Sagan wrote in his 1985 novel Contact, "For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love." Sagan was referring to our universe, but one would understand if Ludwick feels similarly about Petco Park.

Given the disparity, don't expect to see Ludwick back in the vastness of San Diego or anywhere similar -- Seattle (even with the fences moved in), Oakland, Kansas City, Miami and the Dodgers at the least should be eliminated by this crteria. The Reds don't seem to have much to spend after locking up Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto last season, but Ludwick still fits. The Yankees could tab him as Nick Swisher's replacement. The Red Sox could use him in the same role Cody Ross filled last season. If the Rangers spend the bulk of their free agent budget on pitching, Ludwick would be a good medium-cost replacement for Josh Hamilton.

At 34 years old, with a robust outfield market and his park limitations, Ludwick won't draw a megadeal. But Ludwick has been a solidly above-average player when away from the openness of Petco Park, and he should get paid like it -- perhaps two years, $24 million with an option for a third year gets it done.

Potential Suitors: Reds, Red Sox, Rangers, Yankees

Long Shots: Mets, Braves, Rockies

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer sees the Reds' 2013 payroll being $92MM, but a team insider tells him the actual number could start with an eight. This would make it difficult, in Fay's opinion, to do anything in free agency except sign a closer or re-sign Ryan Ludwick.

Giants Likely To Non-Tender Brian Wilson
By Steve Adams [November 26 at 8:47pm CST]
Brian Wilson has saved 171 games for the Giants dating back to 2006, but now, following his Tommy John surgery earlier this year, it appears likely that he'll be non-tendered, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

As Schulman notes, teams must pay arbitration-eligible players at least 80 percent of their previous salary, which would mean the minimum offer the Giants can make Wilson is $6.8MM. That's a hefty price tag for a closer coming off Tommy John, even if he was elite at his peak. The Giants would like to non-tender Wilson and re-sign him to a one-year deal with a lower base salary, but Wilson isn't as open to that scenario.

you want to fight!!:D

You can fight but you can't discuss fighting.

Meanwhile the Angels are apparently close to signing Ryan Madson to a one year deal. Madson hopes this is closer than his resigning with the Phillies last year.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/21158485/madson-close-to-deal-with-the-angels-and-will-likely-be-their-closer

The Los Angeles Angels are close to a deal with free agent righthanded reliever Ryan Madson, major-league sources told CBSSports.com.
The deal is believed to be for one guaranteed year. Madson, from nearby Moreno County, was looking for a chance to close, and he should have that with the Angels. He missed the 2012 season after having Tommy John surgery.

The Reds showed interest, as well, but are deep in talks with Jonathan Broxton now. Madson, a Temecula, Calif. resident, used Angels doctors while he rehabbed this year.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/21145272/seven-teams-have-victorino-on-their-rader-including-some-major-surprises

At least seven teams -- the Reds, Indians, Yankees, Rangers, Giants, Rays and Red Sox -- are believed to be interested in Shane Victorino, one of four excellent center fielders in a strong but still developing market.

Several teams are believed willing to go at least three years for Victorino, who publicly said months ago he was thinking about five years. An uncharacteristically unproductive second half probably prevents a five-year deal, but he's going to do OK, considering the number of teams interested.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/21145813/free-agent-infielder-keppinger-suffers-broken-fibula-in-fall-at-home

As timing goes, Jeff Keppinger's could not have been much worse.

Primed to capitalize on a breakout 2012 season in which he hit a career-high .325, the free agent infielder recently suffered a break in his right fibula tripping down some stairs at his house. The break, described as a small one in the calf by major-league sources, has been repaired surgically. He is at home recuperating.

Keppinger is said by sources to hope to be ready by mid-January and certainly by the start of spring training. Interested teams, aware of the injury, have been perusing medical reports. Keppinger's agent Keith Grunewald has been said to be very transparent about the injury, though Grunewald declined to comment to CBSSports.com.

Reds Notes: Span, Latos, Bailey, Ludwick
By Mark Polishuk [November 29 at 5:45pm CST]
With B.J. Upton now a Brave and Denard Span now a National, the Reds' outfield/leadoff hitter options are thinning out, writes MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. The Reds tried to acquire Span from the Twins at last year's trade deadline, though Sheldon hadn't heard anything about the Reds continuing their pursuit for Span this winter. Sheldon believes Michael Bourn and Angel Pagan are too expensive for the Reds and Shane Victorino may be as well, though Cincinnati is one of at least seven teams who have shown interest in Victorino's services.

Tomorrow, November 30, is the non-tender deadline. Teams declining to tender contracts to arbitration eligible players allow them to become free agents. The non-tender date is earlier this year, apparently under the new CBA.

This could result in last minute trades (like tonight) of arbitration eligible players - trade them rather than let them go for nothing. And it opens up a new group of free agents for this off-season.

The Royals announced that they won't tender outfielder Derrick Robinson a contract for 2013 (Twitter link). Robinson has no MLB experience so he wasn't arbitration eligible.

Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports that the White Sox are listening to offers for Dayan Viciedo and Alejando De Aza.
Gonzales says they're looking for either a big left-handed bat or prospects in return. Not surprisingly, the Mariners -- who have been connected to pretty much every hitter on the market -- have expressed interest in Viciedo, while the Reds are considering De Aza. Vicedo belted 25 homers in 2012 but also had an ugly 120/28 K/BB ratio. De Aza hit .281/.349/.410 with nine homers and 26 steals.

Rays Still Seek Catcher
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 7 at 2:45pm CST]
The Rays continue “poking around” for a catcher, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). They asked at least one team about the possibility of working on a three-way trade that would send Devin Mesoraco from Cincinnati to Tampa Bay.

Mesoraco, 24, appeared in 54 games with the Reds this past season, posting a .212/.288/.352 batting line in 184 plate appearances. He entered the season as the 16th-best prospect in MLB, according to Baseball America. The Rays currently have Jose Molina, Jose Lobaton, Robinson Chirinos and Chris Gimenez as internal catching options.

Reds To Sign Ryan Ludwick
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 7 at 4:07pm CST]
The Reds agreed to sign Ryan Ludwick, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer first reported the Reds were making progress toward a deal with the BHSC client.

The Reds made the free agent outfielder a two-year two-year offer earlier in the week, but Fay reported that at least one other club was being more aggressive on Ludwick. The 34-year-old posted a .275/.346/.531 batting line with 26 home runs in 472 plate appearances for the Reds this past season.

Ludwick ranked 26th on MLBTR's list of top 50 free agents with MLBTR's Tim Dierkes correctly predicting that he would re-sign with the Reds.

Ohio Notes: Hernandez, Bourn, Mesoraco, Hannahan
By Mark Polishuk [December 7 at 6:45pm CST]
The Indians are still pursuing free agent Kevin Youkilis and still trying to work out a multi-team trade involving Asdrubal Cabrera and the Diamondbacks, reports FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal (Twitter link). The Tribe is also looking at alternative moves in case Youkilis signs elsewhere or the complicated trade fails to materialize. We collected the latest items about the Tribe's pursuit of Youkilis and Nick Swisher earlier today on MLBTR and yesterday looked at the latest mountain of speculation surrounding this rumored multi-team deal that also reportedly involves the Rangers, Rays, Mariners, Justin Upton, Derek Holland and a number of young players.

The Reds have generated a lot of buzz this offseason as well, so let's check in on the latest from both of Ohio's clubs...

Roberto Hernandez isn't expected to sign soon despite "a good market" for his services, reports Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (via Twitter). The Indians remain interested in re-signing Hernandez, who also has at least four other suitors.

Reds GM Walt Jocketty didn't have any discussions about Michael Bourn with agent Scott Boras during the Winter Meetings, reports MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Jocketty doesn't see Bourn as a fit in Cincinnati as the center fielder's asking price “would have to really fall."
The Reds aren't going to trade Devin Mesoraco, a team insider tells John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer (Twitter link). The young catcher was rumored to be a target of the Rays, who were trying to involve another club in a three-team trade that would bring Mesoraco to Tampa Bay.

There is a "good chance" the Reds sign free agent infielder Jack Hannahan, a baseball source tells Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities radio (via Twitter). The Twins have dropped out of the running, though such teams as the White Sox, Marlins and Yankees are among the teams known to share the Reds' interest in Hannahan.

As reported earlier today, the Reds agreed to terms with Ryan Ludwick and have talked to the Rockies about a trade for Dexter Fowler.

Taveras, a client of Burton Rocks LTD, explained in September that he intends to play at the MLB level again. "I just need a chance to get back in baseball," he told Drellich. Taveras has a .274/.320/.327 batting line at the MLB level with 195 career stolen bases. The right-handed hitter has played for the Astros, Rockies, Nationals and Reds in his seven MLB seasons. ST. LOUIS -- Free agent infielder Ty Wigginton and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a $5 million, two-year contract.

The 35-year-old Wigginton, who will make $2.5 million annually, has hit 15 or more homers six times during 11 big-league seasons. He had 22 home runs in 2010, when he was an All-Star with Baltimore.

The Angels have a surplus of outfielders following their agreement with Josh Hamilton, and there’s reason to believe GM Jerry Dipoto will make a deal to balance out his roster. The Angels are “very likely” to trade an outfielder such as Peter Bourjos or Mark Trumbo for a pitcher, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). Depending on the return, either player could be moved. Trumbo seems less available than Bourjos, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter).

Both Bourjos and Trumbo will remain under team control through 2016 and won't be arbitration eligible until after the 2013 season.
