I've been receiving feeds on Facebook from Baseball-reference.com's blog with some interesting posts.
Today's caught my eye and then I saw some Reds on this list too. The topic was players who hit more home runs in a season than they struck out (minimum 20 HR's). Big Klu was on the list four times with Frank McCormick and Ernie Lombardi just making the list with their 1944 and 1939 respectively (20 dingers).

That is one impressive list and makes me appreciate Big Klu even more than I already did. There were some pretty incredible RBI totals that went along with many of those names also. Shows the added value of the slugger who regularly puts the ball in play (and the value of having guys on base ahead of them!).
How about almost more Hr's than strikeouts in a career.
Dimaggio had 361 career HR's and 369 career strikeouts.

dude had 18 triples that year.
Be curious how the rate of these occurances changed once "modern" relief pitching took hold. I suspect they dropped quite a bit. Nothing will slow down HR and increse Ks more then the oppossing manager brining in a guy who's specific job is to get guys like you out.

I saw WOY's lists, but in the original list, there were only two players after 1956, George Brett in 1980 and Barry Bonds in 2004 and steroids aside, his numbers were just crazy that season (617 BA's, but only 389 BA's, 232 walks). Klu & Yogi Berra were the last two prior to those, both in 1956. For all the folklore about Yogi and his cockeyed view of the world, one can forget that he was a really good ballplayer.Quote:
