Re: 7/29/13 Reds at "Fathers" (Joey & Jay batting back to back)
Okay I understand that Choo is hurt and has to sit. But why is BP sitting? Not only that but we are playing a terrible lineup as well.
This is our chance to gain ground on the pirates and cardinals, why are we resting guys?

Why?
Because they need rest maybe?
Phillips since the AS game .190/.222/.286/.508
That's miserable
Re: 7/29/13 Reds at "Fathers" (Joey & Jay batting back to back)
I thought at the time when Choo did that slide it looked like he tweaked something. Watch it again. He's lucky he didn't tear something.

Phillips just couldn't hit in Los Angeles. Many of use commented that he looks tired. Not sure it had to be tonight, but it had to be soon.
Reds really want the club in top shape for the Cards. I really have no problem resting these guys who are gassed or nicked up.
If DRob can get a couple of bunt or slap hits, this could work out ok.

BP has started 27 consecutive games AND participated in all of the all-star festivities....and the effects are clear.
Izturis I would guess is batting second because he'll get more at bats there and since he rarely gets to start....he needs all the at bats he can get. (Hoping that is not the reason, guessing it is)
Re: 7/29/13 Reds at "Fathers" (Joey & Jay batting back to back)
Also on the 1st post that had Heisey in LF.....I was going to put he'll get scratched for Paul. Lol but looks like that already happened.

Why the extremes? What would have been so hard about Robinson, Frazier, Votto, Bruce, Mes, Heisey/Paul, Cozart, Izturis, Leake? You don't have to fill the top of the lineup with guys who can't hit and I don't think it is out of line to question Dusty on it.

Why not the extremes?
If he doesn't "get it" then he probably should not care about where the players bat everyday, but he seems to care about a set lineup for certain players. There has to be a reason for that right?
Chances are he wants those guys to feel comfortable all the time, so you won't see Frazier batting at the top of the order one night and 6th the next night.
You know who never moves around in a Baker lineup? The power guys, they always get coddled in the Baker lineup, he's playing for the big inning more often then less, he's looking to pounce and kill all at once.
This is why the Reds look anemic in some sets of games than others, three games of waiting for the big inning and missing out will (and was) be painful.

Today's lineup was obviously intended to avoid the bottom of the order posited in this post. Cozart, Izturis, Leake, then DRob.
Dusty would rather hit Izturis second since DRob may bunt or slap his way on, then Caesar can bunt him over or make a little contact with the runner going.
Hitting Izturis second gives him a raison d'etre. Hitting Izturis after Cozart is just a collection of outs.
I think that's the reasoning.

What would be your ideal lineup for tonight's game (with the players who are available)?

Considering who is pitching tonight for San Diego I'd say this lineup will do, sure Heisey at #2 is better, but the pitcher also has a lifetime OPS against of .894 by RH, so a Frazier/Heisey/Mez run could be fruitful at some point, especially after he works his way through Votto and Bruce. Look for a bunt by Cesar if Robinson gets on base, and well Robinson in CF in this big park should play well too if Choo has bad wheels.
Big inning, big inning...

Fwiw...every day is our chance to gain ground on the Pirates and the Cardinals.
And unfortunately, you can't play your best players every day...not if you want them to play well and stay healthy.
Dusty can frustrate most of us daily with his lineup decisions...but one thing he excels at is understanding his players needs and when they need a breather.

They will score runs on this Padres' retread. I'd say five or so. Reds usually hit these AAAA pitchers pretty well.
