I Hope This Helps Someone
Had a pretty terrifying experience yesterday and wanted to take a quick second to share, so that if it ever happens to you, you'll think as quickly as I was fortunate enough to do.
Was walking to my car last night carrying one of those big office water jugs. I was just finishing a piece of candy, when it became lodged in my throat.
I couldn't breathe, there was nobody around and I'm telling you, I was close to being done.
I looked around for something to do the Heimlich Maneuver on myself with, but I was in an open parking lot. It felt like there was nothing around.
And then it hit me: the water bottle. I threw it down on the ground and forced my diaphram on the spout really hard (I'm pretty bruised today) and out it popped. Air never felt so good.
So a freaking Zephyrhills water bottle saved my life.
I say this not to get some sympathy or a pat on the back- but just in case you'll think about this if it ever happens to you.
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
Wow, way to MacGyver up, dude....
In all seriousness, Dom--I'll bet the air seems just a tad bit fresher today, huh?
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
Thanks for sharing the story. If I'm ever in that position, I'll be sure to think WWDHD.
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
So you would have died without happening to have the big water bottle with you?
How is this supposed to help me again?
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
Good thinking. I've only been choking once, and my father did the Heimlich on me. I can't imagine what a helpless feeling you must have had.

You best start carrying a big office sized water jug with you at all times.
Dom, great and quick thinking under duress. Sorry to hear about the bruise, but I'm sure you'll deal with that rather than the alternative.
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
Thanks for posting this, Dom. Good thinking was time was of the utmost essence and I'm glad to hear all is now well (bruise aside).
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
So, I need one of these?

Glad to have you still with us Dom!
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
I thought you were going to say you chugged the 5 gallons of water to dislodge it. ;)
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
Glad you could make that post, Dom!
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
Glad you're ok, Dom!
I'm betting we could have a pretty interesting "close calls" thread, if we haven't already.

You know, it hit me while running osme errands today that someone might say this LOL...
The idea, of course, was just to let you know the heimlich works and that you can do it on yourself on many objects....
Had the water jug not worked, I would have tried the garbage can or the mail box I guess...the gate on the back of my truck could have worked, too.
Re: I Hope This Helps Someone
Good advice Dom and good thinking.
Also, if you want a workout as well, carry a bottle FULL of water at all times and lose weight at the same time!

That bottle was full, believe me. So here I was choking and carrying a very heavy object....
What an incredibly strange feeling, by the way. I wouldn't say it was painful- the thing that was worrying me is that I didn't know how much time I had to get it unstuck.
When you just sit there and hold your breath, you can go for awhile- but if you aren;t doing it on purpose, your body contimues to try and breathe- at least mine was- and it was the strangest, strangest feeling.

I'm hoping the nearest "object" is Salma Hayek.
