Just going off the Toledo game he coached tight, he coached not to lose. They were stacking the box with 8 men and he kept trying to run the ball off tackle. I think that if he loses a game and the national championship hopes are going (they are always going to be there) he will be able to coach more freely. He will be able to play Miller more. He will be able to show the AD and fans what type of coach he can be. If Fickel coaches like he did against Toledo I don't see how they can beat Miami, Wisconsin, MSU, and maybe even UM and PSU.
This OSU team is loaded with talented young players. IMO they need to be given free reign and be allowed to make mistakes. There may have been a small chance Miller comes in against Toledo and lays an egg. But I think the ultimate upside is a heck of a lot better than a 27-22 win at home.

I totally agree on Miller. I think the biggest factor in the Toledo game was how poor OSU was on 3rd down. I don't know what the final stats were, but at one point in the late 3rd or early 4th quarter I believe we were 2/11. Adding that threat of a running QB in those situations would have made a huge difference and completely changed the game IMO.
I see what you are saying about Fickell and don't disagree, but I think it was more of a learning experience for him and not a trend we are going to see. If the punt doesn't get blocked and Bauserman hits a couple of those long balls that he really should have I think everyone would be talking about how great Fickell has been doing so far. OSU has a great defense and, like Tressel before him, when in doubt he is going to lean on that to win the game.
Re: 2011 OSU Football-Will Tressel Survive?
The Big Ten is really bad this year, so who knows. But I don't see anyone beating Wisconsin unless it's Bret Bielema.

Pretty much spot on. There were two decisions that I disagreed with in the game. The first one was not playing Miller. You bring Miller into the game and the defense really can't stack the box as much. And going for two after a TD was way to early.
Conversely to the blocked punt if OSU doesn't return a punt for TD they are in serious trouble. That logic at times can cut both ways. I do think that OSU had the game sealed away until Rod Smith fumbled.
I thought Fickell would be different from Tressel. I didn't really expect to see Tressel ball played to that degree against Toledo. And I do agree that it is a learning process with him on the sidelines. I also think that we often forget that even good OSU teams have struggled at home against subpar competition. Just off the top of my head BG, Navy, and Ohio all put a scare in OSU in Columbus. It happens, especially when these mid major type programs are good and come in overlooked.
Re: 2011 OSU Football-Will Tressel Survive?
A thought that's been running through my head... say Fickell isn't brought back, Urban turns the Bucks down, and Mark Richt resigns/is fired at Georgia. If you're Gene Smith, do you place a call with Richt? I sure do, at least for an interview. I know the guy has fell on some hard times lately, but he had remarkable success at Georgia for quite a while, and I love his character. I think he'd be a nice, and realistic, fit to replace Tressel. I know many OSU fans would go in a totally different direction for many reasons (no ties to the university, has struggled as of late, has never played for a national title) but I'd give the guy a shot to prove that the fall at Georgia doesn't define him as a coach.

I don't think that is a good idea. No ties to Ohio recruiting, no "understanding of the Michigan rivalry". I think Richt is a good enough coach, but he has underwhelmed at Georgia. I know the SEC is tough, but he has had monster recruiting classes, and limited success.

What is Fickell's status for 2012 anyway? Would they open up a search after a 10-2 season?

He is not listed as the interim coach, but he is only on a one year contract. Ohio State wants to see how things go with him, and then whatever happens with the NCAA. If the NCAA imposes real sanctions on the team, they won't be hiring anyone big anyway. Lots of moving parts until November.

OK, you got to see it and it wasn't too pretty:

Re: 2011 OSU Football-Will Tressel Survive?
I too was eager to see how Toledo measured up to Boise State and I went "uh-oh".
I think it was a little more than just the QB Moore. Their whole aerial game (QB, receivers, game plan) was much better than OSU's. Boise also had the advantage of seeing game films from the OSU game so they knew what Toledo did and defended it well. OSU acted like a lot of what Toledo did was a surprise.
I am hoping Bauserman is more of a Krenzel than a Zwick. I certainly would like to see Braxton Miller get some PT and really don't understand why he didn't last week. I chalk that up to Fickell's inexperience.
OSU needs better special teams play. Especially tonight on the road. I was surprised last year when special teams let the team down a lot since good special teams play is a Tressel hallmark.
I've pretty well reconciled myself to this year being a down year. I see OSU finally losing to Michigan plus another 1-2 games in the Big 10. Plus I wouldn't be shocked to see them lose tonight (as much as I hate to say that). Fickell seems a Tressel Jr. and that only works when you have a talent advantage.
Tonight's game, they need competent special teams, Bauserman to manage the game well, effectively run the ball, Miller to throw in a wrinkle or 2, and the defense to play well. I'm pretty sure the Buckeyes will play good D. The rest of it I have my fingers crossed.

I think the take home was that BSU is better than OSU...

I highly doubt anyone here disagrees with that, but thanks for stating the obvious...
