Price On Lineup Construction

Dusty Baker avoided hitting left-handers Joey Votto and Jay Bruce back-to-back most of the time. Will Price?
“Again, it depends on who your players are,” Price said. “We certainly know we’re going to have Joey and Jay on this ballclub. If we have (Shin-Soo) Choo, that’s three out of four left-handers. . . So you could potentially see a late-game left-hander come in there and run through four straight hitters in which three are left-handed. That’s probably something that wouldn’t resonate with me to do. . . I understand breaking up the lefties and righties. In the end, I think you want to cluster some thunder and productivity together where you can do some damage.”

Great line.
Re: Price On Lineup Construction
wonder what he would do with a lineup that featured 5 or 6 left handed hitters, and two Juan Castroesq right handers.

He's learning.
Re: Price On Lineup Construction
Sounds to me as if he likes the big inning.
"Clustering guys together to do some damage".
That seems pretty straight forward to me.
Re: Price On Lineup Construction
"Clustering" your best hitters together is not a priority we heard from Dusty. He was more concerned about matchups than overall ability.
And I think his comments about Frazier, Mes and Cozart were basically about plate discipline.
Again, I'm probably just wishcasting, but until I hear or see explicitly otherwise, I'm going to take the glass half full interpretation.

So am I, but the jury is obviously out at this point.
Heck, he doesn't even know who is going to be on the roster, let alone where they will be on the order.
One thing I do know. It's more fun not knowing, with the hope that he's going to be some kind of strategical genius, than wishing against hope that an dyed in the wool kind of guy like Dusty would somehow have an epiphany.
Re: Price On Lineup Construction
I wish that opening day the Reds get their first two guys get on, and Price calls back Votto from the on deck circle. Price then whispers into Votto's ear "fake bunt on the first pitch". Price then goes back to the bench and giggles to himself when Dat Dude tells him that Twitter is exploding over Buntapalooza continuing.
Re: Price On Lineup Construction
How much is there really to say about lineup construction? The fact that a molehill is made into a mountain on here doesn't mean a manager should be expected to wax eloquent on the subject.
Re: Price On Lineup Construction
I'm not supporting BP's POV in any way, but goodness CTrent... that's a bad look.
Re: Price On Lineup Construction
I think with Price's background as a pitching coach, we'll probably have a better idea of lineup strategy once the bench coach and hitting coach are selected. Given his discussion about a player's counsel, I suspect Price will also have to some degree a counsel with those that know hitting on his coaching staff and will take their views into consideration.

I will never understand giving precedence to something that MIGHT happen over something that WILL happen.

Amen! Why in the world should the possibility of the other team having an advantage once prevent you from having an guaranteed advantage 3 times?
