Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game

I can't say that I'm much of a fan of them myself but I think it's interesting how much hate this band gets.

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
I think this might be more about wanting a Detroit act to play.
As for Nickelback, they're sucky but harmless.

Would another band that wasn't from Detroit get the same reaction?

I don't know. But I do think that if I was from Detroit (oh wait, I am... but that was a LONG time ago....) and my team was doing well for the first time in almost forever I'd probably want a local act to represent us when we were finally on the national stage. Especially considering how many great music acts are from Michigan.
What's with picking Nickelback anyway, Collective Soul not available?

I'm sure the NFL has their fine hand in the selection. No one controversial.

Just go all out.... get ICP.

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
I think this is hilarious news. I've disliked them for years. It boggles my mind that anyone would ever want to listen to them. As soon as I hear them on the radio, my hand, or shall I say gag reflex, instantly goes to change the channel.
I'm kind of surprised Kid Rock wasn't picked. Or, even Eminem. Even though M probably wouldn't sit well with a lot of fans.

The NFL has generally been using older artists with Baby Boomer appeal such as Paul McCartney and the Stones. Given that practice I don't understand why Bob Seger was not chosen.

Could always have one of Jack White's other projects perform. The Raconteurs are a great live act.

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
Ah, Nickelback. The very definition of boring, generic arena rock.
I'd say this is less about wanting Detroit to be represented than it is about not wanting to be embarrassed when for the first time in forever people are going to be actively watching their game. I know I'd prefer just about anyone over Nickelback if I was in their shoes.

Or was liking nickelback part of Tiger's wholesome all American boy charade?

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game

Chevy Trucks wouldn't sponser the halftime show.

If Nickelback plays the same song 3 times in a row would anyone notice?

No, because they really only have that 1 song.

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
Nickelback always reminds me of movie theaters, when you come in early and they are playing bad music during the trivia.

I think you forgot the "Motor City Madman" Ted Nugent.

As long as he doesn't shoot anyone with a crossbow during the show, well, unless he shoots Nickelback.

I would, because my ears would be bleeding.

Dang. I don't think Nickelback is that bad at all.

You should get your ears checked then ;)

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
Detroit really punches above their weight with big name music acts.
Alice Cooper and Kid Rock have a similar profile -- everyone knows who they are but nobody actually listens to them.

Alice still gets a ton of airplay on classic rock stations here in the Midwest.

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
If people from Detroit had their say, it would probably be Eminem or Kid Rock.
Eminem's rap history is pretty well documented, although Kid Rock kinda made headlines with his Super Bowl appearance during Hootergate when he wore the American Flag draped as a poncho.

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
Well that was worse than I expected  Now I know nickleback is as generic as rock gets but that was flat out :barf::barf::barf: They should have just rolled out one of the old motown stars or some American idol runner up.Ethier way they would have been "edgier" than .

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
I didn't think Nickelback could get more boring, but they did.
-
Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
I saw a guy strumming an electric guitar and a guy strumming an acoustic guitar. However, I heard absolutely zero guitar sounds in the mix. All I heard was bass guitar and drums and crappy vocals.

I thought Ted Nugent got killed fighting for his country in Viet Nam. Maybe I'm thinking of somebody else.

Ok. I've never lived in the Midwest. That makes sense. It's like Springsteen, who's MUCH bigger on the East Coast than everywhere else.

Just saw Iggy last night at the Warfield in SF. Fantastic show. At 64 he's still shirtless, running around the stage, jumping into the crowd.

Re: Detroit wants to disinvite Nickelback from its Thanksgiving game
Alice Cooper is playing the Taft here in Cincinnati next Monday. I'd love to go but I have a concert myself. I heard a really great interview with the guy on NPR a while back. He's pretty fascinating.
