Who is the best manager in the game today?
We are about 6 hours from first pitch and I'm stuck at work. I nominate Buck Showalter.
- Led a preseason bottom feeder to the playoffs in 2012
- Orioles have now won their last 100 games when holding a lead after 7 innings.
- Blending young talent with established veterans
Thats off the top of my head. According to Redszone, who wears the mantle?
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
I think Showalter is as good of a pick as any. Also Davey, Maddon, and Leyland*. Bochi seems good as well, but I wonder how other managers would fare with that kind of pitching staff.
* I liked Leyland since his smoking cigarettes in the dugout days.
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
Joe Maddon's implementation of defensive shifts and the effect it has had on the BABIP for Tampa's pitching staff is alone enough of a reason for me to nominate him.
Year/BABIP/MLB rank:
Code:
2010 .280 2nd
2011 .267 1st
2012 .279 1st

Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
Joe Maddon would be my pick. Of course, the amount of data we are working with on what we actually know about the managers is incredibly small. What they are working with can give someone a big advantage and I don't mean the players. We, generally speaking, know what the players can do. But what kind of scouting/analytics team does the manager have and how good is the info he is being fed?
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
From what I hear, Buck would certainly agree with you. ;) Of course, Marty B. would be cussing you out.
Fredi Gonzalez is pretty good.
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
Going just on what we hear in the media and see on the field, I'd probably put Davey Johnson at the top of my list.
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
Bruce Bochy and its not even close for me.
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
Bruce Bochy and Joe Maddon would be picks for best for right now. There are some that are still good but used to be great.
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
I nominate Walt Weiss. He has a career .636 winning percentage as a manager and his teams have only had one day in his entire career where they were more than 1 game out of first.
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
If I had a club and was looking to win now I would go with Bruce Bochy.
Odd as it seems if I had a young club looking to build I would call Joe Girardi. Did a good job with a young but talented team in Florida for only a season. Seems like a guy players really enjoy playing for and could learn a lot from.
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
What is it about Bochy people are so enthralled with? His handling of Brandon Belt over the last couple of seasons was awful...
Re: Who is the best manager in the game today?
Give me Bochy's pitching staff, and I could be league average.
Let me repeat, the Orioles have won 100 games in a row when leading after 7 innings. That is incredible. I think the majority of manager's job is handled off the field, but Showalter's late game management is unreal. I know its the players responsible for the result, but he always seems to bring in the correct reliever or pinch hitter to come up clutch.
Joe Maddon comes in at 2nd for me. I just like his glasses though.
