even though they lost some talent these Phillies CAN HIT THE BASEBALL
Re: Reds vs. Phillies Monday 8/20
They need to stop pitching to Howard. He kills the Reds every game.
Re: Reds vs. Phillies Monday 8/20
The shift is something that always manages to amaze me. I can't recall it even existing more than seven or eight years ago. I would be embarrassed as a pro to have a team play me in a way that says, "your abilities are so limited and predictable that we're just going to concede the entire left side of the infield to you." At least throw a bunt down the third base line every now and then.

Leake on the way to a short outing...already 56 pitches through 3 innings with 5 hits allowed
Re: Reds vs. Phillies Monday 8/20
Bruce trots down to first. Nice start.

He's always capable of a few ten pitch or less innings

I read once that the first shift was against Ted Williams.

I believe Cairo struggles so much at the plate because he can't see. He's constantly squinting.

Originally called the "Boudreau" or "Williams" shift, the strategy is often associated with Ted Williams, but it was actually first employed against Cy Williams during the 1920s.[1][2] It was later used against Ted Williams during the 1946 World Series between the Red Sox and the Cardinals as a defensive gimmick by St. Louis manager Eddie Dyer to psych out and hopefully contain Boston slugger Williams. It was devised by Cleveland Indians manager Lou Boudreau on a blackboard between games of a doubleheader in July 1946 to halt Williams' hot hitting. "I always considered The Boudreau Shift a psychological, rather than a tactical victory," wrote Lou Boudreau in his book, Player-Manager. The shift has been employed since then to thwart extreme pull hitters (mostly lefties), such as Barry Bonds, Ryan Howard, Jason Giambi, or David Ortiz.
