Cardinals sign Jason LaRue as backup catcher
Cardinals signed catcher Jason LaRue, who had been with the Royals, to a one-year, $850,000 contract.
I didn't think LaRue commanded that much of a contract, even at $850 thousand.

Redhook- I couldn't agree more! We already have a catcher that has a tough time hitting
.200 or better. Went over to one of the Cardinals forums (this one at MLB's Cardinals website-fan forums) and for the most part the Cards fans were pleased to add LaRue as a backup because of his arm/defense. I think I read LaRue threw out something like 16 of 40 base-runners last year. Must be that the Cards don't have a catcher in the minors that they want to have occupy the bench most of the time behind Yadier Molina. One KC fan wrote in to say that LaRue's hitting will frustrate the heck out of you. We all know that too well!

They got ripped off. What bet did they lose to make this deal?
Re: Cardinals sign Jason LaRue as backup catcher
I would take Larue at $850k over Ross at $2.8mil every day.

Sorry,I am not in the Ross fan club.Truth is if I had to pay a catcher $2.8 mil and only had the 2 choices it would be Larue hands down.

He was picked up by the Cardinals for his ability to throw runners out.

They also picked up his ability to allow passed balls.

You can't be serious. The only quality LaRue had was throwing out base runners, period. He is a horrible catcher, and just as bad at calling a game. When was the last time an MLB catcher used his mitt like a trash can lid trying to trap a mouse, on pitches in the dirt!?!? I agree, Ross is over-paid, but he can catch, call a game, throw runners out, and hit a few HRs.

Have you looked at Larues stats?

Compared to what other catchers in the majors make Ross is a steal

You're right in that aspect. And my drift says so. I wouldn't blink an eye if asked to choose between the two, in answering, ROSS! I also give Ross credit for the ability to deliver in the clutch from time to time, ala Joe Oliver.....
Re: Cardinals sign Jason LaRue as backup catcher
I'm not a Jason LaRue fan at all but from what I read at the Cardinals forum I mentioned above, Jason LaRue was the catcher who caught 5 out of the 6 shutouts Royals pitchers had last year. Didn't research it. Just what I read.
As far as Ross goes, I'm hoping he returns to his 2006 form. I think he can hit 20+ homers again IF he can get that swing of his corrected. Aside from the salary difference, I take Ross over LaRue any day. Ross is a better all-around catcher than LaRue ever thought of being. Just my opinion.
