Were will the Reds be in the standings on Aug. 4th?
I say they will be at least 7 games back. Mark it down. I hope I'm wrong but I'm not. No trades will be made and are offense will continue to be terrible. The bullpen is going backwards. The managing is awful. Dusty has no idea how to put a lineup on a card or manage a pitching staff.
This team needs 2 things to contend next year because watch what I'm telling you this year is over.
1) a new manager
2) someone to hit behind Votto
Move Phillips to leadoff and put Cozart in the 2 hole were he belongs. Votto 3rd and someone behind him to protect him. Get these 2 things and the Reds are a championship team.

What's wrong with you? Talk about someone with a glass is completely empty philosophy. How is the bullpen going backwards? Why is the managing awful? How can you win over 1500 games and not know how to put a lineup together or manage a pitching staff? Who said Cozart belongs in the 2 hole?

Re: Were will the Reds be in the standings on Aug. 4th?
yep 0-27 and counting Stubbs deserves as much time as he needs to prove he isnt a liability batting 2nd since Dusty is afraid to make him lose his position..

What's the OBP of Heisey vs Stubbs, same with SLG?
-
With regular PT Heisey was .333/.423
Neither deserves over 400 AB

If they lose tonight Dusty will be under .500 over the last 10 seasons.

1st place on August 4th.....book it!!!
-
Re: Were will the Reds be in the standings on Aug. 4th?
Dusty just doesn't have much to work with. Votto and Phillips (occasionally) are the only consistent hitters on the whole team. The offense is extremely weak (if you bet this team you'd make a ton betting the under). If Walt doesn't get a center fielder this team will be 5-10 games out by 8/4.

Re: Were will the Reds be in the standings on Aug. 4th?
But the Pirates arent that good though, theres no way they can be that far ahead at that time
-
Re: Were will the Reds be in the standings on Aug. 4th?
yes, base the whole of the season on a series where we play the NL's best team on the road and the Pirates play the Astros at home.....

A very good question. And yet, somehow, Dusty manages to pull it off.

I think most of the success Dusty's teams have had are in spite of his efforts not because of his efforts.

Re: Were will the Reds be in the standings on Aug. 4th?
Where does August 4th come into play? Strange date....
Including Aug. 4th, the Reds have 8 games against the Pirates, 10 games against the Cubs, 6 games against the Astros, and 7 against the struggling Phillies. Seven games back doesn't really seem that bad with those many winable games on the schedule.
Go Reds!!

Re: Were will the Reds be in the standings on Aug. 4th?
The same place they've been most of the season so far, in first place. The Pirates are going to come back to earth at some point. If not for a handful of ridiculous late game losses, the Reds would be comfortably in first place. With the kind of pitching and defense the Reds have, there's no way they'll ever be seven games out of first. So far we're 3-4 on the west coast swing, having played arguably two of the five best teams in the league. We just need to take three of four from the Pads and it will have been a successful road trip. I hope some of you guys don't live near any bridges.

We went 3-4 against the Giants....but the Dodgers were without Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and we missed Kershaw....that was not even remotely close to a top NL team as we faced them.
Aug 4th
Cards +1
Reds -1
Pirates -4
Brewers -8
Astros -12
Cubs -15

I could be wrong, but I believe we were 4-3 against the Giants this year (including two games we absolutely blew late). As of yesterday, the Dodgers were #5 in USA Today's MLB power rankings (one spot behind SF and one spot ahead of the Reds), and they are now back in first place in the NL West. Even without Kemp and Ethier, they're pretty good.

So, give you a manager that does not win games, but does things the way you like and you will be happy?

I know throughout the season the Dodgers have been very good....but they were without 2 of the most productive players in the NL (by far their most productive) and we missed a unanimous CY from last year. I agree they have been 1 of the best teams the 1st half....but we'll just have to disagree on the team we just faced.

We lost the last two nights because the Dodger pitching staff shut us down. Their offense isn't the same without Kemp and Ethier, obviously, but they still have one of the five best pitching staffs in the league -- even with us missing Kershaw. I know I'm in the minority, but going 3-4 at SF and LA isn't that bad. We just need to hammer the Padres. If we can't do that, we don't deserve to be in first place right now anyway.

3-4 doesn't bother me....but 6-10 starts to.

Without even looking at the schedule In 3rd place 6 out, I'm afraid.

Re: Were will the Reds be in the standings on Aug. 4th?
One item that bodes well for the team's performing well down the stretch is that this bullpen, in addition to being one of the league's best, is very well-rested. In years past it was overused early and scuffled in the second half.
The rotation is greatly improved from even 2010. This staff is very close to being the best in the majors.
Another factor is the fact that defense never slumps. Or maybe it doesn't have such severe ups and downs as the other parts of the game.
Pitching plus defense wins championships.

When you can only score an average of 3 runs a game idk if our pitching will be enough. It definitely wont be enough in the playoffs if the Reds make it there

Hopefully they will be within spitting distance of the Pirates and Cards AND looking back at the Baker era in their rear-view mirrors. :)

These type of threads are ridiculous, IMO. What difference does it make where they at on Aug. 4 - it only matters where there at come October - and to predict it or guarantee anything is a waste of time.
Are there problems with this team? sure - name one team that doesn't have at least one wart they would like get rid of.
The reality, they are in it and I believe they will stay in it and be there at the end of the season. If and when they get to October and they're still playing -anything can happen. As a fan you can't really ask for much more than that.
The problem with most people on this board and with posts like this - is they will never be satisfied. If the Reds win the division - these folks will argue they didn't win it by enough games. If they do not win the NL pennant or the World Series then it will be Dusty can't win the big game(s) and if the Reds win it - they really won't be happy because Dusty will be back as manager and the whole insipid cycle will start all over again.
It goes back to what somebody so eloquently posted a few weeks back. Most would be happy if the Reds were a fourth place team with someone else managing them - than a first place team with Dusty at the helm.

Didn't you just waste your time posting that? They are in a rough 6-10 stretch....people have trouble with a team that could very well win 90+ losing 10/16 games. This team is not improving IMO. Every team goes through these stretches but a lot of stubbornness from management and players leave many to believe this team is not ever going to reach it's potential.
I'm glad your glass is over-flowing....most are a little over or a little under 1/2 full. No one understands why the thread is for Aug 4th but people who participate often enjoy predicting stuff. Everyone knows it means nothing and doesn't matter.
-
Re: Were will the Reds be in the standings on Aug. 4th?
August 4th is a month from now.
Read the thread like this: Where will the Reds be in the standings a month from now?
The Reds will be in Cincinnati that day, duh.

Ironman, if it doesnt mean anything why do it. Besides i dont see it as predicting as it is just taking another shot at what is a pretty good team, not a great team, but a pretty good one. Even the Big Red Machine struggled out West. Im sorry my being positive bothers you, but i think jumping off a bridge because of a rough patch is a little over the top the other direction. This is just baseball do you overreact like this with other things in life? I sure hope not.

I just don't know what you are talking about.
People like to predict.
It means nothing....but is sometimes fun to see how close you are.
How is it taking a shot at a pretty good team?

Predicting is one thing. Look at the context of the thread - it's more of the sky is falling mentality because the team is struggling out West - which is a characteristic of this franchise. Like it or not.
Perhaps I'm off base on this but if you go back and read what I originally posted - my point is true - it doesn't make any difference where they are right now or in a month - it's where they will be at the end of the season.
I like to enjoy the ride - and not worry about where the Reds will be in a month. You're probably right, some people do like to predict - I do not. We're different - it doesn't mean I'm right and you're wrong or vice versa - but I think I can offer a differing opinion if I so choose.
A question to the predictors - what is the point? - to be able to say "I told you so" if you are right - it's certainly not about coming back and saying "boy I was wrong." I see it as the former.
A second question - if the prediction comes true and the Reds fall on their face - will you stop being Reds fans? If not, why not? Which again goes back to my original question - what's the point?
I guess we'll just agree to disagree.
