Hmm, this Robert Booth kid for great lakes is pretty good size (maybe 6 ft 3 220), caucasion (seemingly) and has an interpreter. He is Japanese?? A military kid perhaps?
Also the guy doing PBP said when the players were introducing themselves they were allowed to say Name, position where they were from and something unique about themselves. Sappelt added "3/4 of the world is covered by water, the other 1/4 is covered by me". Cocky little shrimp (no offense short guys), he looks like a shorter Furcal. He also stands way back in the corner of the box and has a a bit of a Sheffield waggle in his bat (not nearly as extreme). I'd be surprised if he could hit anything on the outside part of the plate.
Dayton lost 14-3.
Sappelt: 2-for-5 double, SB
Day: 1-for-4 triple
Sosa: 1-for-4 double, walk
Wiley: 1-for-2 two walks, SB
Puckett: 1-for-4
Fairel: 2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
Thurman: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K
Carolina lost 4-3.
Heisey: 1-for-5
Cozart: 2-for-4 walk, SB
Francisco: 0-for-4 walk
Frazier: 1-for-3 double, sac fly
Parker: 0-for-4
Henry: 0-for-4
Denove: 2-for-3 double, walk
Eymann: 0-for-3 walk
Buck: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 68 pitches
Geronimo: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Lutz: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K
You have to be excited about the Sarasota lineup after the way they hit tonight.
Yonder Alonso is just a beast. 1-for-3 with a home run and two walks in his first game. He's got an incredible combination of power and plate discipline. He could potentially be one of the rare power hitters who actually walks as much as he strikes out. Hopefully he crushes the ball and forces the Reds to promote him to Double-A by the middle of May.
How about Alex Buchholz? Kid skips Low-A Dayton, goes straight to High-A Sarasota and goes 3-for-4 with a double, home run, a walk, and 4 RBI in his first game.
And I can't forget about Neftali Soto. He went 2-for-4 in his High-A debut with both hits being to the opposite field. Very impressive. This Sarasota lineup has the potential to score plenty of runs.
I've seen Thurman a few times and he reminds me of Kent Merker
I was a the bats game, here are my thoughts:
- Homer was bad, but it must have been hard pitching in the steady cold rain that was falling the first five innings.
- Norris Hopper slid in to first on a bunt attempt. I don’t like that. But he actually smacked some balls pretty well his next few at bats.
-Jonny Gomes also hit the ball hard. He no longer has facial hair, and he looks completely different.
- Adam Rosales and Luis Bolivar hit home runs to left, Rosales’s just cleared the fence.
- Matt LaPorta is going to be a star. He was very impressive for the clippers.
- Some people say Danny Dorn can hit. I don’t. He looked completely lost out at the plate his last 2 at bats.
- Ramon Ramirez was the first bat out of the dugout, long tossing and running in the outfield while the clippers were still doing batting practice.
- Justin Mallett and Brian Peterson were in the dugout and were introduced in the pregame ceremonies, though the were not on the official roster. Drew T. Anderson wasn’t.
Please comment.
Thanks for the report. Any thoughts on Valaika or Stubbs?Quote:

Just wanted to add a few things to this from the brief glimpse I got at the dragons on TV. As I said a brief glimpse so take it FWIW.
Sappelt - Talked about him already but wanted to add he can go get it out there (was playing CF), tracked down a deep fly ball in the gap in RCF with a dive at the end. Just missed another laser/bomb off the wall from a dead run in middle CF. Plays a bit out of control, misplayed a ball that he overran a bit and didn't play the aforementioned laser/bomb off the wall so it bounced back out towards CF. But it was OD I'm sure that he'll calm down a bit later. He probably needs to move up in the box and towards the plate like I said he's never gonna hit much away if he doesn't. Has his hands high with a slight waggle (ala a baby Sheffield) but that doesn't seem to be a hinderance. Very short in stature but built a bit stocky.
Puckett - Built a bit like Sappelt only a little taller, something screams Ryan Freel when I look at him. Didn't get to see him on defense much just seemed to miss a couple of hard hit gounders by an eyelash. When he swung he seemed to be all pull with a bit of a loop in his swing. He has an open stance so that might have something to do with it, maybe his timing isn't quite there yet.
Wiley - As I said before his plate discipline is outstanding and he was hitting against pitchers who were pretty close to the plate for a Low A team and he wasn't even thinking of offering at most of the pitches. And when I say offering here I mean the bat is barely raising off his shoulder. He only swung at 2 pitches in 2 PA's that I seen, walked on 5 pitches in the 1st PA and never offered at all. K'd on 7 pitches in the 2nd PA offering twice fouling one off and whiffing on strike 3 on a big breaking curve on the inside part of the plate (I should add strike one wasn't even a strike and he didn't swing at it). I presume that is where his hole is because his swing is a bit long, not a lot but a bit. If he finds a way to shorten up his swing just ever so slightly his bat will move fast. His defense didn't really stand out to me in the limited plays I seen. He backed up CF like he was supposed to on that Sappelt catch in the gap. Other than that nothing much to report on.
Rojas - Made a smooth play defensively on a ball hit up the middle (about a foot or 2 to the SS side of 2nd) on a kid who is a burner (Dee Brown SS). Rojas was initially positioned a bit deeper than even with 2nd and perhaps pulled a smidge towards 2nd but close to the middle of 2nd & 3rd overall. Billy Doran (who was on the broadcast) intimated that he will learn to charge that ball especially on fast players but Rojas still nipped the kid anyhow.
As a team I think they will run ok and they are a pretty patient bunch. I think their defense will be pretty solid for a low A team. And as we all know once they get a few arms back will pitch pretty well. But they seem to be a bit short on pop and maybe a little shy on hitting for avg. although they were facing a pretty advanced Low A team this night. Too bad they don't have Soto, Bucholz and Mes (at least for a few weeks would have been nice for all I think) they would have a pretty complete team there. I didn't get to see a whole lot of everyone else but I hope to remember to catch the next televised game on April 24th in it's entirety.
Thank you for the review, Mario-Rijo. Do you think it would be fair to say that Cody Puckett looks like the next Justin Turner?
