Both are good movies, but I wouldn't rank them with a Godfather, or Goodfellas. Good, but not great. I like both movies for different reasons.

Casino hands down, IMO, which I would personally rate on par with Goodfellas.
Pacino was good in Carlito's Way, but the best performance was Sean Penn's excellent portrayal of the 80's-living, coked up, scumbag attorney.
Carlito's Way for me. One of my top 5 favorites, probably.
Casino starts great but grinds to a halt about midway through.
For me, Sharon Stone's performance in Casino is just so annoying that it hurts the movie. I thought she was just way too far over the top. I rmember seeing it at the theater and just hopeing & praying she'd get whacked soon so she'd stop screaming. I do like the move though...
my vote would go to casino, although as previously mentioned, sharon stone really is annoying...hard to beat joe pesci and de niro in the same movie, unless you're talking about "heat" with pacino and de niro...great movie
I'm not a huge fan of either movie but I will say that, as always, Sean Penn was great in Carlito's Way.

Personally, I liked Casino better.
Casino is better than Carlito's Way, IMO.
I'm a big fan of mob movies, I'd rank my top 3 like this:
1. Godfather
2. Godfather II
3. Goodfellas
Godfather III belongs in the dumpster.
Carlito's Way hands down, I couldnt even make it through Casino.
Casino...to me....was Goodfellas...set in Vegas.
Pesci again is a nut...... DeNiro is like the Liotta character...detached from the really bad things going on but still reaping the rewards or consequences of them.
You have the same narration going on......it's just almost self conscious in the way it was trying to be Goodfellas, but it's Scorcese copying and repeating himself....so if he wants to do that, he is allowed.
I enjoyed Carlitos' Way more......but it still has the Goodfellas shadow over it.
I guess if you can put that movie out of your head.....you can enjoy these 2 more.....but i saw Goodfellas 7 times in 3 months....each time with a different person. That movie basically defined 90's cinema.
What i found interesting about all 3 movies.......is the clothing and hairstyles.
I notice these things beacuse i studied movie history and production in college.
In Goodfellas.....besides the cars and the fact that the dates were put on the screen, every once in a while.....you could never really tell what year it was. No big bushy hair or long sideburns or Brady Bunch type clothes in Goodfellas......but in the other 2......they went all out with the clothes, hair....porno mustache on Viggo Mortensen. Almost like they wanted to make sure...you knew it was the 70's.
Carlitos Way. And Penn was maaaavalous. ;)
And as far as gangster movies go, I really liked "Once Upon A Time In America" with De Niro and James Wood.
