Joey Votto - "I'm getting there."
Votto implying that he's still not over his injury from last Summer. Surprised it's taken so long and he's still not over the injury.
“I’m getting there,” Votto said. “I’m getting there. It was something I was progressively working on in spring training. Things like this take time. I feel like I’m headed in the right direction. ...I really haven’t taken a swing — or at least swing I’m comfortable with — since last July. I had a few hits in spring training but those weren’t typically the type of swings I take during the season."

Re: Joey Votto - "I'm getting there."
I'm wondering if some of this isn't mental. No slam on Joey but sometimes when you are injured, even after you have rehabbed and rested, you are hesitant to make that cut or throw as hard as you can or run as fast as possible. Perhaps he's still got it in the back of his mind that if he swings "comfortably" he will feel pain or reinjure himself.

From Fay's twitter today:
Votto was hitting .290 with 9 Ks and 3 XBHs after 9 games last year. This year: .290, 9K, 2 XBHs. #reds @Cincienquirer

Joey's about to blow up...and God help the National League when he does.
Re: Joey Votto - "I'm getting there."
If there's one player on the Reds' roster that I never worry about, it's Joey Votto. And as previously mentioned, this is the same trend he followed at the beginning of last season and we know about the explosion that followed that.
Re: Joey Votto - "I'm getting there."
FYI... Votto mentioned in the article his knee is fine. And is just talking about "his swing" getting there.
Just didn't want people who didn't read the article to misunderstand based on the first post.
Re: Joey Votto - "I'm getting there."
For someone that pulls the ball like Votto does it take long to get your timing down since you have swing later?
Re: Joey Votto - "I'm getting there."
Votto has always been a slow starter. I'm not sure why, some guys just are. But, once he gets going watch out.
Re: Joey Votto - "I'm getting there."
I am sure some of it is mental. He will be fine.

Re: Joey Votto - "I'm getting there."
Joey Votto just isn't as good as people think.

I have a theory on why. By his own admission, in spring he flat out just takes pitches. He doesn't swing much, but watches pitch after pitch after pitch to try and get that pitch recognition thing going.
That probably means that unlike most guys, his swing just isn't as ready as some others and it takes him a little bit of time to get it going to the point where we expect it.

Thanks for sharing this, because it seems like he had about 15 doubles this time last year:lol:
