Jason Donald. Acquired in the Shin Soo Choo trade. Also, Cesar Izturis was signed to a minor league deal

Yeah. I'd be all for upgrading this position over Donald and Izturis, if there is someone legit available.
I'd have to thumb through the available free agent thread.

Every team's back up middle infielder is as good/bad as either Donald or Izturis. If they were better, they would be starting middle infielders.

Hey, Miguel Cairo's still out there!lol!
Maybe the Reds could package some their surplus relief guys and one or more of the backup middle infielders listed above for an upgrade, especially if Rolen returns.
Re: Reds Sign LHP Manny Parra, DFA Todd Redmond
There is zero chance LeCure goes to Louisville. Quit even bringing it up.
The main guys on the bubble are Simon and Ondrusek. Even with Ondrusek signing a 2-year deal, he's only making $900K this year and has options remaining. The Reds could stash him in Louisville no problem.
Also, Simon is owed about $900K this year. No options remaining, so the Reds would lose him if they DFA'd him, but I'm sure they'd be willing to eat that very small contract if they thought he wasn't the best choice for the 25-man roster.
LeCure has proven himself. He's a lock.

In 2222 MiLB PA, Donald is .285/.372/.434/.805.
And those 2011 MLB numbers (.318/.364/.402/.765 in 143 PA) give me more hope that he won't be a liability at the plate.
It's just a feeling, but I think we could be pleasantly surprised.

Also, Simon is likely easily tradeable for value if the Reds wanted to, considering his 2012 season.

Define value. I doubt you'd get much more than minor league filler for any of the Reds bubble pitchers. Simon, Ondrusek, Arredondo, Masset ...

Not sure how it works out with guys still in arbitration, but the Reds did just sign him to a 1 year deal. I know there is a rule that a newly signed player cannot be dealt until June 15th without consent from the player. So he in effect has a no trade claus until the 15th and that can be a factor. Yet, and I mentioned, not sure how that rule works out with guys still in arbitration years. So I could be wrong if that rule becomes null with players still in arbitration.
Re: Reds Sign LHP Manny Parra, DFA Todd Redmond
You mark Brandon Lyon off the list. MLBTR is reporting he is close to a deal with the Mets.

The reds would have to be willing to do something with 3 of them for Hoover to make the team. Its why I would have non-tendered Onsdrusek and Simon.
.
This is a solid argument, no doubt.
I expect Masset to spend most (if not) all of 2013 on the DL
If Parra is effective in spring training and everyone is healthy, I could see one of Simon/Arrendondo/Ondrusek traded.
I guess I remember last spring when three of our bullpenners were hurt. Thankfully Walt was able to get Simon and Hoover, but we can't count on that luck.
I guess I don't mind having extra bodies (esp since I am assuming Masset is toast). Even if that means Hoover and/or LeCure begin the year in AAA.
Re: Reds Sign LHP Manny Parra, DFA Todd Redmond
The O's claimed Todd Redmond today.

Orioles Designate Trayvon Robinson For Assignment
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 8 at 1:05pm CST]
The Orioles announced that they designated outfielder Trayvon Robinson for assignment. The move creates roster space for right-hander Todd Redmond, who was claimed off of waivers from the Reds.
The Orioles acquired Robinson from Seattle for Robert Andino this past November. Robinson appeared in 46 games for the Mariners in 2012, posting a .221/.294/.324 batting line in 164 plate appearances as a left fielder. The 25-year-old was initially acquired by the Mariners in the three-team trade with the Red Sox and Dodgers that sent Erik Bedard to Boston.
Re: Reds Sign LHP Manny Parra, DFA Todd Redmond
So basically we got no value for the awesome Janish
Great job Walt, you're ruining our franchise.
