Aruba police official: Suspect confesses to killing missing teen
ORANJESTAD, Aruba (CNN) -- One of three young suspects arrested Thursday in the investigation into the disappearance of an Alabama teenager has confessed to her murder, a senior police official said late Friday.
The suspect has agreed to lead police to the body of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, the police official said.
Police did not say which of the three teenagers confessed.
The three have been identified as brothers Satish Kalpoe, 18, and Depak Kalpoe, 21, and their friend, 17-year-old Joran Van Der Sloot, the son of a judge.
The three, taken into custody early Thursday, were the last people to have reported seeing the missing student.
Police said Van Der Sloot met Holloway May 29 at the casino in the Holiday Inn where she was staying. The Birmingham, Alabama, student was in Aruba with classmates celebrating their high school graduation.
Later that night, Holloway went to a popular nightclub, Carlos'N Charlie's, with about 40 of her classmates. She left around 1:30 a.m. on May 30 with the Kalpoes and Van Der Sloot, authorities said.
Holly Brown, a Holloway friend who was at the club that night, said she found Van Der Sloot to be "very different."
"He lied about his age, and when we went on the [Carlos 'N Charlie's] Web site, we found pictures of him there one week before at the same place, wearing the same clothes," Brown told CNN.
In interviews with police, the three men acknowledged leaving the bar with Holloway. They told police they visited a beach before taking her back to her hotel about 2 a.m.
According to police statements, the Kalpoe brothers described her as stumbling on the way into the hotel, possibly as a result of alcohol, and that a "dark-colored" man in a black T-shirt with a radio helped her.
That testimony led to Sunday's arrest of Abraham Jones, 28, and Mickey John, 30, two security guards at a hotel near where Holloway was staying.
But a Holiday Inn employee who has reviewed surveillance tapes from that morning said the tapes do not show any sign of Holloway. Authorities had no explanation and were looking at whether the five men have any connections to each other.
The guards' attorneys maintain the two are innocent.
None of the five men have been formally charged.
Van Der Sloot's mother said she was confident her son had told authorities everything and that he was innocent.
"He was willing to help with anything, and he had a kind of quiet resolve -- I mean he said, 'Mom, don't be upset because everything will be fine. I know I am innocent, I didn't do anything,'" Anita Van Der Sloot told CNN.
"And in a very almost naive way he was very open with us, told us everything what happened," she said, adding that he has offered to speak with the Holloway family.
Government officials have said solving Holloway's disappearance is a national priority on the small Caribbean island where tourism is a top industry.
A massive search operation has involved authorities, family, friends and volunteers.
Authorities said the investigation has spread beyond Aruba -- particularly in nearby Venezuela, to see whether the 18-year-old may have gone there, either voluntarily or against her will.
CNN's Karl Penhaul and Rick Sanchez contributed to this report.

Re: BREAKING NEWS suspects detained in Aruba confesses to killing Alabama teenager
I'm curious if any ugly, non-white teenagers have been kidnapped lately.
But for the sake of her parents, I'm glad to hear there may be some closure.

Exactly what I was thinking. Except I'd add the word "poor" to ugly and non-white.
Re: BREAKING NEWS suspects detained in Aruba confesses to killing Alabama teenager
But who would want to watch a news story about a poor, ugly, swarthy girl who got kidnapped?
Re: BREAKING NEWS suspects detained in Aruba confesses to killing Alabama teenager
Nevermind. Deleted for concerns regarding raising blood pressure.

Nope. And a check of U.S. murder statistics for 2003 reveal that one (1) female was murdered. Her name was Laci.

Im not a conspiracy theorist but there is an african-american girl in Richmond who has been missing for a long time now. Her family cant get any national news attention at all to try and help them out. Only because her stroy is local to Dayton I have heard her story, has anyone from out of the area? sad
Re: BREAKING NEWS suspects detained in Aruba confesses to killing Alabama teenager
This trend started to come to light for me when the JeanBenet Ramsey story broke several years ago. Since then we've seen it continue with cases like Laci Petersen's, the wealthy Utah Mormon girl who got returned safely to her family, the girl who was shown being abducted on a security camera (led off by the arm by the abductor -- New York?), the Wisconsin college student, and the list goes on and on. I ask you: what do all of these victims have in common? I'm not going to call it a conspiracy, per se, but the news outlets attempt to tell us which stories should be important to us and which ones we should pay less attention to. As a result, they place a higher value on 0.1% of lives than they do the other 99.9%. It's disgusting.

You don't have to be. Don't worry about people painting you as such. Nor is this a right-wing v. left-wing thing. It's truth. It's not a new thing for some unscrupulous people in the news business to exploit the fact that murders and kidnapping of "All American" types sells papers and improves ratings. It's happened for the past century It doesn't mean we have to like it.
But in the modern Amber-alert age, where we could use quick mass media in a more responsible and less sensational way.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba - The father of a Dutch teenager arrested in the disappearance of a young U.S. woman told his son and his two friends that “when there is no body you don’t have a case,” Aruba’s attorney general said Wednesday.
Paul van der Sloot, a judge in training in Aruba, gave his 17-year-old son Joran van der Sloot and two Surinamese brothers legal advice the day after 18-year-old Natalee Holloway disappeared, District Attorney Caren Janssen told MSNBC in an interview.
“They spoke about the situation that when there is no body you don’t have a case, and that was already in the first day after the disappearance,” Janssen said.
Janssen said that the elder van der Sloot had obstructed the investigation by asking a friend of Joran, who had been interrogated by police, what he had told them.
Paul van der Sloot, 52, was arrested last Thursday in the disappearance but released Sunday when a judge ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to hold him.
Janssen told MSNBC that he was arrested because investigators believed he was also a suspect in the disappearance.
Janssen also said that a month after Holloway’s May 30 disappearance, investigators had found nothing concrete to suggest she was dead.
Calls to Janssen seeking further comment late Wednesday were not returned.
Joran van der Sloot and his Surinamese friends, brothers Deepak Kalpoe, 21, and Satish Kalpoe, 18, were arrested June 9. No one has been charged.
Also Wednesday, Steve Croes, a disc jockey who was arrested and held 10 days before being released Monday, told The Associated Press that his detention was based on a lie he told police.
Croes, 26, said he told police he had seen Joran van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers drop Holloway off at the Holiday Inn the night she disappeared, as the three originally told police.
“That was a lie,” Croes told the AP during an interview Wednesday night. “I didn’t even know those guys and they didn’t know me.”
Croes said that while he was at an Internet cafe a few days after Holloway’s disappearance, he heard Deepak Kalpoe talking on a cell phone about how the young men had dropped Holloway off. Croes said the story seemed plausible and he went around repeating it, adding that he had seen them drop her off. Police questioned and then arrested him, Croes said.
“I learned that if you don’t know something, keep your mouth shut,” said Croes. He said has been fired from his disc jockey job on the Tattoo party boat.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba - Three young men detained in the disappearance of an Alabama teenager have been charged with murder since their arrest more than three weeks ago, Aruba's chief prosecutor told The Associated Press on Friday.
The charges were not announced at the time to protect the family of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, said Attorney General Karin Janssen.
"The three have been charged with the murder of Natalee Holloway from the beginning" of their arrest 10 days after the young woman went missing May 30, she said.
