CINCINNATI (AP) -- Free agent quarterback Doug Johnson signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday after spending two games last season on Cleveland's roster.

With starter Carson Palmer recovering from surgery for torn ligaments in his left knee and the possibility that backup Jon Kitna could become a free agent, the Bengals were left with only third-string quarterback Craig Krenzel.

Johnson played in 23 games with Atlanta from 2000-03 and had 11 starts, including eight in 2003 while Michael Vick was injured. He appeared in two games for Tennessee in 2004.

Johnson is 218-of-384 for 2,600 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

I hope this means Kitna is gone.

Roster Fodder, to borrow a spring training term. Kitna is much, much better than Johnson.

Brian Griese would be a better ....safer bet.

But...the Bengals have to think of signing at least 3 of their OL to long term contracts.... plus trying to get either a pass rushing DE, run stuffing DT, Safety or CB in FA. One of the 4 have to be addressed with a legit player...not roster filler.

Johnson has a nice arm

He just can't aim it.

I'd MUCH rather have Kitna thank you.

I'd rather have Kitna as a backup. The problem is if he will re-sign or not knowing he will be a backup.

Kitna's days of being a starting QB are long-gone. Nobody's going to sign him to start. It's all about $$ now--who's going to pay the most for a #2 QB.

Given the choice, I'd rather have Krenzel playing than Johnson.

maybe he was put on the roster to play in nfl europe?
