Has anyone ever purchased travel insurance?
My wife & I are taking a trip to San Francisco at the end of the month. We're think we ought to get travel insurance in case we have to cancel the trip or cut it short. Particular, my wife's mother and my parents are elderly and we're thinking it might be prudent to take the coverage. I'm seeing one quote for about $150 with about $3000 in expected overall expenses for our trip.
Your thoughts?
Re: Has anyone ever purchased travel insurance?
Never. And I travel a lot. My feeling its like the extended warranties they're always trying to sell you. Not worth it.

I normally never get insurance. I only did it once but it was for a very expensive international trip. I did not need it but I was really glad I had it.
I would only suggest getting it if there is a decent chance you are canceling the entire trip and you will be out the entire $3000.
Prior to doing that I would see if there was anyway you could mitigate your risk if you have to cut the trip short. Check on refund policies and early checkout fees if possible.

Same here: I never got it until my wife and I planned a trip to a Sandals resort in Jamaica. I'd rather be out the approx. $100 if we go, than the much-larger figure we're out if something happens and we have to cancel.

Make sure you read the fine print. How do you get paid? What documentation do you have to show? Do you need a doctor's excuse or can you cancel for any reason? Is there a deductible?
It is sometimes warranted with elderly folks who have health problems. Since you're traveling with them, see if you can cancel if they have a health issue. If so then you may want to consider it. My in laws usually do get it but we make the decision that we're going with or without them thus we don't get it. My wife's in the travel business and we know the dilemma you're in

Actually, it's just my wife & I going. I think my father-in-law's death last Christmas and the juggling of travel for various family members made us wonder whether we should go to the expense. But I told my wife last night that I think we probably can get by without it. The major expenses are the air fare and our hotel. We booked on Delta.com and, while the tickets aren't refundable, I believe they're transferable and with no fee if done on their website (if I've read their fine print correctly). The hotel did not require us to put down a deposit, but there is a one night's room cost if we cancel after a certain period (fairly close to the date), so that's not a significant amount. I think our Alcatraz tour is non-refundable, but the wine tour we've gotten has a 72 window. We purchased Giants tickets, but we could easily sell those and minimize the loss.
The biggest concern would be if something happened to one of our parents while we're away. More so for my wife's mom, but her health presently is fine, so it was more a "what if". My own mom's health is doing poorly, but if something were to happen to her (which it could), there won't be a funeral since she's donating her body to UC. Mom would tell me, if I were to ask, to stay on our trip and gather with the family when we come home. She's just that way.
Price was ranging anywhere from $150 to $350 dollars for about $3000 in overall expenses, most of which would not be incurred if we cancelled within certain time frames. So I think we'll not get it.

OK, given that I think you made the right call. Have fun!

Trip's going great, no snafus thus far. Great night at AT&T Park, perhaps one of my favorite parks thus far. Giants won 3-1 over the Rockies, some great defensive plays and a nice triple to get the scoring off. Saw a woman with a Jay Bruce shirt as we were getting on the train coming back to our hotel. Daggone people keep mistaking my 1955 Reds cap for a Cubs hat. Grrr.

You get weird looks when you show up with gear of unrelated teams. Happened to me last week at a Marlins-Braves game. I was wearing a REDS T-shirt and hat. Rooting for the Braves, of course.

AT&T is a fine park, I'm a little disappointed I didn't get to attend any games this year. I assume your wine tour is up north in Wine country, if so you should have a good time. That's my neck of the woods.
