Who will start Game 4?
:confused::confused::confused:
I see a few options.
A. Fake an injury, (aka Simon) and add leake on the roster
B. Let Cueto Pitch..if he's physically able to..then go with a combo of lecure/simon
C. Let Latos start Game 4
My issue is this. If we start Latos game 4, and we lose that game. And we need a game 5..well, I love Bronson...But, with short rest, in GABP..just smells like trouble to me.
Such a headache.

Re: Who will start Game 4?
Has to be Latos.
Can't be Cueto given the oblique and clearly they're struggling to decide whether to DL him.
Can't fake an injury. That's a bit silly. And very risky.
Leake only possible if they DL Cueto. And, given the late hour, doesn't look too likely since they must think he'd be usable for LCS.

I don't know..Latos in Game 4..using your best chip...ugh, I don't know. I would save Latos, I mean do we really rely on arroyo if game 5 becomes reality? Or do we rely on the horse that's always been dominant against the Giants.
It's such a tricky situation.

Re: Who will start Game 4?
You have to find somehow, some way to start Leake tomorrow. He was lights out against that lineup in the season and it puts Latos on his normal rest. As good as Bronson was the other day, I want no part of him against Cane

He wasn't really lights out. He had a complete game, yes. But the Giants had plenty of opportunities and left many men on base. I like Leake...but

Re: Who will start Game 4?
Bailey said in an interview that Leake is starting tomorrow.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
IMO it will be Leake on a short leash. Remember, the Reds are still in the driver seat and can afford to allow Latos to get his rest for a potential Thursday game. Also, if Leake falters, you have two long guys in LeCure and Simon available to eat up innings and protect your back end bullpen guys.
Leake almost makes too much sense for tomorrow.

Re: Who will start Game 4?
He he he. I'm got u guys tonight, despite my hurt calve. Good game.
We are hungry and I the Hunter am hunting for another victory tomorrow. Now if you guys pull it off I'll be a good sport. But we are hungry and ready to come alive.

Proper spelling and grammar are essential for good message board trash talk. This is not good message board trash talk.

Re: Who will start Game 4?
Mike Leake and the BP, need to save Latos for game 5 so he will be rested if needed and if not needed can go in the NLCS since we are likely to be without Johnny Cueto which totally blows.

I'm not talking trash though. You guys may end up winning the world series. But I will be ready tomorrow. There is no guarantee and it's going to be tough.

Re: Who will start Game 4?
There is no sense to pitch Latos in Game 4 on short rest when the Reds still have the upper hand in the series. I trust Leake against Zito tomorrow. If not, then the Reds still have Latos on full rest against Cain on Thursday.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
You DL Cueto. If he's still not sure how he feels 3 days after his injury then he's not going to be ready to pitch in the NLCS. With the way this medical staff operates I'll be surprised if he's ready by spring training.

It doesn't matter who we face tomorrow. We're just happy to have a tomorrow.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
No Leake unless you DL Cueto.
Can't even speculate on Cueto since just too much unknown. The 3-day-uncertainty-so-won't-be-ready-for-NLCS theory simply isn't based on anything.
Will be clear soon enough.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
Latos only threw 57 pitches the other day. So even though he is on 3 days rest, it's not like he threw 110 pitches and is coming back in 3 days. I believe if we don't win Game 4, then we are done, no matter who pitches Game 5. I just don't see us beating Cain again. The guy is just so good.

Cain is good, but the reds have seem to have his number. 0-3. Don't forget we beat him in GABP as well. Plus Latos is a giants killer, if anything, it'll be kept close (one would hope)
Let's just focus on winning tomorrow so a Game 5 isn't even a theoretical possibility. :beerme:

Re: Who will start Game 4?
I don't think Cueto is coming back for the NLCS with an oblique strain. If it's very, very mild, maybe he can pitch game 6 or 7. That's doubtful, with the way he does that half turn in his windup. I hope I'm wrong, but there's a good chance he won't be back for the World Series either based what I've read on recovery time for others who've had this type of injury.
I think the Reds will have to DL him and go with Leake. Latos on short rest again and then potentially Arroyo also on short rest seems too risky if this goes five games. If you still hold out hope for Cueto in the NLCS, maybe you can take your chances on getting three innings each out of LeCure and Simon. I'd prefer to save Latos to face Cain in a game 5 either way. I don't like the idea of asking someone else on the team to fake an injury and lie about it under MLB scrutiny.

Re: Who will start Game 4?
I'd go with Latos. Dude is a stub and will nail it down before do-or-die time sets in.
Or you could start Chapman..
From what I read it's going to me Mike though and I haven't a lot of confidence in him to show his best stuff. Just a gut feeling. Frazier should start @ 3rd. I hope game 5 isn't necessary.

There's no way you could start Chapman... He's been pitching relief all year, and wouldn't last more than two innings. Dusty didn't even trust him to pitch the 10th in game 3, plus he had to sit for more than a week to regain his velocity at the end of the season. His arm isn't ready for that.
The best choice is Leake. The Giants seem to have trouble with soft tossing tricksters (Arroyo), and he'll be on a short leash anyway. Worst case scenario Leake gives up a few in 5 innings and Simon or Lecure comes in.
If we lose, we have Latos rested for game 5... and this team is NOT going to lose... bank on it.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
Chapman comment was a joke.
I do worry about Leake but only if he gets in a jam early.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
The pitching matchup section of the NY Post shows Latos as the starter, so I'm going with that. The NY Post is NEVER wrong! ;)

That's who I would go with. Get the series over with before it gets to Cain. If we can get at least 5 outa Latos then turn it over to the pen I would call it a success.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
I don't like any of the options. If you start Leake, that means that Cueto is out for the NCLS which just makes me sick to my stomach. But running Latos out there on short rest is a scary thing too, and leave you in a bind for game 5.
Thinking outside the box, how about starting LeCure and hoping for 4-5 innings out if him and turning it over to the pen?

Would normally agree but then again, I said the same thing yesterday about Bailey. He exceeded that...and we STILL lost!
-
Since there are no good options for game 4, I say save Latos for game 5.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
My gut says go with Latos tonight. He's the best pitcher we have - and he showed on Saturday that he doesn't get rattled when he's thrown off his routine.
With Latos, we have a favorable pitching matchup tonight. I don't want to see Matt Cain in a game five.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
As long as Zito starts in Game 4 it is all systems go.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
It's official...it's Mike Leake!!:alcohol::alcohol:

Re: Who will start Game 4?
I don't think losing Cueto for NLCS should factor into the NLDS starter decision because:
1) If you are pitching Cueto in the NLCS, it should be game 4 of NLCS to give him max rest before you use him, so he would only pitch 1 game of NLCS.
2) If you are pitching Cueto in the NLCS, then Leake is on the roster, because you need to plan to have him for an all hands on deck situation in Game 4 if Cueto falters. So you might get Leake pitching NLCS game 4 any way.
Given those 2 condition, I think they should sacrifice the possibility of Cueto pitching game 4 of NLCS and DL him, then you get the best 2 options of winning a 3rd game in the NLDS. Leake vs Zito and Latos versus Cain at this point are the 2 matchups possibilities that give Reds best chance of winning a 3rd NLDS game. Without that 3rd NLDS win, the NLCS conversation never takes place.

OK big bad wolf. :p

Re: Who will start Game 4?
Don't forget, the only good leak is a Mike Leake!
I have confidence in Leake, especially in the "less homer freindly October GABP." Go get em Mike!
Go Reds!:usa:

Re: Who will start Game 4?
I say go Leake today and save Latos if game 5 is needed. I saw Mo Egger says in his blog this morning he'd have a short leash with Leake and if needed go to Latos again out of the bullpen, I disagree. I think give Leake a shot- have a quick hook and go to our bullpen immediately if we fall behind by 2-3 early. Lecure, Simon, etc to try to get to the 7-8th.
You have to have Latos ready for game 5 IMO just in case. That way if we dont need game 5, you have him for game 1 of LCS assuming Cueto is not available.

I don't really like this train of thought. I say go Latos in game 4 because of Zito pitching. We are more apt to score some runs off of him than we are Cain in game 5. So...since we should get some more scoring oppurtunities today, throw someone that will give us a better chance to win today. Then you can come back with Arroyo and Bailey in the next round. Remember that if we win today we will get a few days off so that will help. I say get this over today and 1 we save Cueto for next round if he can get healthy, if not we can still use Leake. Just my opinion, to each his own!!! GO REDS!!!!

Can anyone CONFIRM that for sure. It's probably true. But nobody knows THAT for sure. The way the Reds handle this stituation is SOPHMORTIC-sp Say No comment on the game 4 starter and do not have misinformation all over the place on Johnny C. Very bad P.R.

Re: Who will start Game 4?
no official confirmation. ESPN is reporting it, citing sources. You also had Bailey saying it last night.
This doesn't make it so, but the wind is sure blowing in that direction.

Re: Who will start Game 4?
Who are the Reds trying to fool or what are they trying to prove. Make a decision or make it public. It's these kinda of things make me scared that the Reds aren't ready for prime time!
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
they did. its Leake. supposed announced at 11.30 reported by Lindsay Patterson, MO Egger, also on the Sportsbooks he's listed as the starter.

With Bailey saying it last night and all the smoke, I feel like the decision has been made and it's Leake. The Reds probably are just trying to keep the Giants off balance by not announcing it until the last minute.
-
Re: Who will start Game 4?
Fact of the matter is Latos gives us the best shot to win today or tomorrow.
Leake is probably on par with Zito and w/ homefield the Reds are probably the slightest of favorites.
But if we use Latos and lose we become the underdawg in game 5 in a potential Arroyo vs Cain matchup.
Starting Leake to day and Latos tommorow makes us favorites in both games. Starting Latos today makes us favorites in one game.
