His father, also Rafael, played one season in the minors for the Angels in 1987, splitting two A levels, one being in Salem, OR where the son was born in 1991.
At Texas A&M, he was red-shirted his first season. No explanation was given.
His family is originally from the Dominican Republic where his uncle pitched for the national team.
Found this on the University of Houston's site, but I'm also seeing something about Arizona when I do a web search. Looks like he may have committed to Houston for next year.
DANIEL PONCE DE LEON - RHP - LA MIRANDA, CALIF. - CYPRESS COLLEGE/ARIZONA
Ponce De Leon was a 24th-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2010 Major League Baseball draft.
"Daniel is a 6-4 right-handed pitcher from Cypress College in California and attended the University of Arizona as a freshman. Playing for coach Scott Pickler at Cypress, Daniel is expected to be a key contributor on this year's staff. He brings a classic pitcher's body, armed with an 89-92 mph fastball and a 74-76 mph curveball. He has all the tools to come in and compete for a spot in our rotation right away. We are very excited to add someone of his ability and experience to our club."
You may be right. Sheppard has committed to Seton Hall, along with his cousin Ty Blankmeyer. In high school, Sheppard's father was their coach. At Seton Hall, it will be Blankmeyer's father coaching them. May be a bit like drafting Austin Robichaux last year (now playing at Louisiana for his father). Still, at this level of the draft, you take your chances.
