That baseball card you just can't forget
The thread on R.J. Swindle got me thinking about baseball names, which got me thinking about baseball names on baseball cards, which got me thinking about the obscure players on cards that are burned on my brain for eternity-- because of the picture, or the name, or some combination of both, or just "because."
So, without further ado, here is a thread to remember those strange cards, strange names, and strange photos that made your personal history.
Here is who I thought of immediately, likely because his was the card I got in EVERY pack of 1987 Topps:

When I was a kid I had about 20 of these:

At the time I thought he was the greatest pitcher ever because there were so many of his card and his name was awesome.

Who would have thought who and what he would have gone on to become?

Re: That baseball card you just can't forget
I had two of these at one time, and sold them both at $1000 each. That was about $1500 less than their book value at the time. But, after taking them to several dealers, it was the best price I could get. I used the money to pay off some stuff before I got married, but I sure wish I had kept one. The Tops Mantle Rookie card was worth $30,000 to $35,000. My grandma found them in the basement and assumed they were my dad's. Dad gave them to me. The curious part about that is my Dad was fighting in the Korean War in 1952 and had absolutely no idea how they ended up in Grandma's basement.
I still have several from the 1952 Bowman, but nothing but scrubs.

This was the oldest card I had in my collection in the early 60's, a 1955 Bowman of Gus Bell. Wish I had it now.

I had three of these. I gave one to a friend who's in the Cardinals organization, and the other two were stolen with 500 plus other 60's era cards while I was out in LA a couple of years ago.

I had 2 Ryan rookies too, but unfortunately my older brother got a hold of them. Confetti. :(

No one posted that baseball card of Billy Ripken?

Re: That baseball card you just can't forget
In 1965, I had a ton of Mickey Mantle's cards and a ton of the Senators' Howie Koplitz cards. I hated the Yankees and threw Mickey's cards in the trash. I kept the Koplitz cards...in retrospect...:(

Since you mentioned it, it got me curious. I'd never seen it before. Good lord, what was he thinking?

I don't know how to post images but IMO the 89 Upper Deck Griffey Jr. changed baseball cards. Being in grade school in the 90's this was the hottest card of its day. I remember the day when I would go to a card shop and the card would price for over $100.

Saving to buy this card and then watching it increase in value during my teens was a great source of pride for me. Should have sold high.

Re: That baseball card you just can't forget
The first baseball cards I ever got were from the back of a box of Twinkies. I believe it was in 1977. This is what they looked like:

Unfortunately, I didn't get anyone as interesting as Stargell. The first cards I ever got were of legendary pitchers Rick Reuschel and Jim Slaton.

Rusty Kuntz - how could I forget that one?
This one always stuck in my head, just for the goofy factor - and because he was seemingly in every other pack of '81 Topps.

And I always thought this guy had the least likely name and look of any baseball player I'd ever seen.

The 1981 set was the first (and last) set I completed only through the bubble-gum packs. In previous years, I came up short. After that, I began collecting complete sets.
