Re: Chase for the #1 pick!!
well crud i had it so it looked like a normal paper standings.. how the heck do you keep it from doing that? I even clicked on "edit" and it shows it correct
Re: Chase for the #1 pick!!
Well Washington has the top two spots locked up (they ain't gonna sign Strasburg). So we need to make up these 5 games and catch the Royals so we can land Strasburg or Harper.
Re: Chase for the #1 pick!!
The Question is are the Reds going to sign their 1st round pick this year or will they have two picks in the top ten.
Re: Chase for the #1 pick!!
If the Reds don't win again I think they have a good shot at the 1st pick
Re: Chase for the #1 pick!!
The Reds have 12 games left with Pittsburgh so that head-to-head matchup will be key.

Wrap the standings in the code tag [ code ] [ /code ] (with the brackets and without the spaces).

Unfortunately, the Brewers just signed Corey Patterson. Signing him and playing him and Taveras everyday would have made up those 5 games easy.
But I still have hope. :D
Re: Chase for the #1 pick
Realistically I think we'll end up with the 3d to 5th picks next year so we should probably be starting to focus our discussion on what's going to be available there.

They'd probably pull a Kazmir. ;)

All they need to do is get to #2 for Strasburg. I actually think Washington is prevented from drafting him again if he doesn't sign, so a #2 would guarantee us a shot at drafting him.

Which would be #3 since Wash. will get #2 for not drafting Strasburg.

I could be wrong, but I thought that the rule was the team couldn't use the same pick to draft the unsigned player. I.E., Washington can't use pick 1A to sign Strasburg (without his consent), but they could use the #1 overall pick. Then use 1A to draft Harper.
Of course, after not signing him the first go around I'm not sure they'd even want to draft Strasburg again and risk losing the pick for good, but perhaps having a little extra leverage would change things.

I've got faith they will lose at least 9 of 12 to the Pirates and be able to get that 2nd pick. The Nats are just too far ahead at this stage to catch. Although the Reds could do their part and lose four straight to the Nats in mid-August. You never know that 4 game series with the Nats could be a key one.
Re: Chase for the #1 pick
Bryce Harper would be the consensus number one pick. If the Nats can get Strasburg under contract and then Harper follows as the number one the next year, baseball could be interesting in the nations capital.

As I understand it, a team can not draft the same player 2 years in a row unless you have his permission to do so.

Plenty of good seats are still available!
Re: Chase for the #1 pick
The Reds shouldn't hope for a #1 pick. They couldn't afford him.
Re: Chase for the #1 pick
This link should be an easy way to track the standings.

Re: Chase for the #1 pick
Suddenly my Strasburg or Harper dreams are inching closer.
Of course, the Nats could botch all of this by signing Strasburg then still taking Harper with the No. 1 pick next season. But if not, then the Reds could climb to No. 2 and nab Strasburg, assuming he does not given permission to be drafted again by the Nats.
Re: Chase for the #1 pick
A "good" night as both Oakland and Baltimore won. Currently tied for the 5th pick.
Code:

Washington 35 72 .327 31
Kansas City 41 65 .387 24.5
San Diego 44 64 .407 22.5
Cleveland 44 62 .415 21.5
Cincinnati 45 61 .425 20.5
Baltimore 45 61 .425 20.5
Pittsburgh 45 61 .425 20.5
Oakland 46 60 .434 19.5
Arizona 48 59 .449 18
Re: Chase for the #1 pick
Similar to my Beckham thoughts in the other thread, I just thought of something again.
Say Strasburg does not sign. Say he does not give permission to Washington to draft him again. Say the Reds finish 2nd to last. Say Washington takes Harper and someone else with their first two picks. Say the Reds are next up and........
They pass on Strasburg.
Would that be the straw that breaks the camel's back for many of you?

Nah. I hoping they pick Greg Oden with Kevin Durant as the only possible fallback. Oh wait this isn't Boston in January 07.
